Ubuntu :: Compiz (core) - Error: Failed To Manage Screen: 0

Sep 18, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 x64.This past week Update Manager came up and offered to do a partial upgrade, as some packages could not be upgraded. I had just assumed the 'partial' was an issue with Opera (as I have seen in the past), so I allowed it and let the update go through.

This morning when I turned on the system, Metacity is running, and Compiz is not. My first thought was that the update somehow changed my defaults, so I went to change them back. Desktop Effects could not be enabled through the menu (there was a screen flicker, then a "Desktop effects cannot be enabled" error).

Running compiz from the terminal does this:

Code:

barry@Independence:~$ compiz --replace
compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager Various other methods I found on the forums to fix it left me in the same state. Clearly there's some issue that is preventing compositing or some other effect from working that Compiz needs. I've never had to troubleshoot an update before, so I'm not sure where to look to see what exactly was changed.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Feature To Manage More Than One Application On Screen

Nov 2, 2010

I used to have a feature that when you had more than one application on screen, and clicked one behind the active app, the active one would then fold back behind the new application. Like the active app would place itself behind the new app in the same way you would bring a card forward in front of another if you were playing cards. I hope that makes sense.. Anywho, I lost that setting and can't seem to find it again. And is it possible to have a plasma screen in gnome, if so, how?

Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Doesn't Find Manageable Screen?

Oct 13, 2010

I upgrade yesterday my lenny to squeeze.

Now I have some problem with compiz. When I do compiz --replace, I get:

compiz (core) - Fatal: Software rendering detected.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager

Is it a driver problem? My ATI video card is one of them that works only with open driver and they seems corrrectly installed. glxinfo | grep render, give me a positive result.

Debian Multimedia :: NVidia+Compiz+crtl+alt+F7=blank Screen [Gnome]?

May 27, 2011

I got the nVidia driver and Compiz installed. Everything's running fine . But then I tried crtl+alt+F1 - which worked though the font was way too big - and then crtl+alt+F7 to get back to the Desktop but it went to a black screen and blinking cursor instead. I searched a bit and it seems this was a problem a few years back but nothing recent. FWIW, I don't have this problem with Hardy/nVidia/Compiz on another drive in this same machine. Is there a way to fix this?

May 4, 2015

i have an installation of wheezy 7.8 i think. i was facing difficulties in read of matroska video. therefore have decided to installer gstreamer1.0 wich should be resolve my problem. i have added the backports repository in apt sources list. after an apt-get update i launch apt-get install gstreamer1.0 . i have noticed it have starting downloading more file than it needs i concluded that it was a upgrade or something like because the kernel was also updated. after the the packet downloading it has started the installation with some errors related to LOCALE LCC. it has stopped and restarted some services wich is normal. i have closed all others apps and restarted. Here start the hell. after the restart i have passed the kde login screen and after BLACK SCREEN with mouse working.

Alt+F2 don't open the krunner

What i have tried? i have rename the /home/jefcolbi/.cache and back it again, rename /home/jefcolbi/.kde and back it again. next i have tried to check the Xorg config file. i created a new one with X -configure, modified it to feet my system configuration this does not resolve the problem but add another the keyboard is not working in graphical mode.

Debian Multimedia :: Gdm3 Black Screen With Cursor After Upgrade

Oct 25, 2015

Yesterday I done an upgrade with apt and since that time whenever I boot up I am presented with only a blank screen and an unresponsive cursor. I cannot switch console using Ctl+Alt+F*. The only thing I can do is Alt+SysRq+(R,E,I,S) which kills gdm3 and gets me back to the console.

* I can get into Xorg fine via the startx command
* As a temporary fix, if I enable automatic login (via /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf) then gdm3 works.

But I can't get the normal authenticated login screen to work.

Output of journalctl for a failed attempt at running gdm3 with verbose debugging enabled:

Code: Select allOct 25 01:24:43 [hostname-removed] systemd[1]: Starting GNOME Display Manager...
Oct 25 01:24:43 [hostname-removed] systemd[1]: Started GNOME Display Manager.
Oct 25 01:24:43 [hostname-removed] gdm3[15863]: Enabling debugging
Oct 25 01:24:43 [hostname-removed] gdm3[15863]: Changing user:group to Debian-gdm:Debian-gdm
Oct 25 01:24:43 [hostname-removed] gdm3[15863]: Successfully connected to D-Bus

[Code] ....

One other thing worth noting, before upgrading yesterday, I changed mirrors and accidentally pasted in "stable" into /etc/apt/sources.list. So basically I did an initial upgrade, realised my mistake, switched back to testing (which I was on before) and done another upgrade, which is when I noticed this problem.

Debian Multimedia :: Distorted And Defect Screen After Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-5?

Dec 24, 2010

OS Environment : Debian Squeeze, Gnome, Compiz, kernel 2.6.32-5 Hardwares : Pentium4, ATI Radeon 9600 AGP8x

After upgrading the kernel and restarted, I've been having an issue with the screen. After logged in through GDM, the screen starts distorting, creating small colorful object and blurry

Screenshots :

However, this problem does not exist on tty other than used by desktop ( tty1...tty6 is not affected ) And not in GDM too!!! My GDM shows up nicely, I let it there for hours and no distortion, no strange colors whatsoever.

KMS is enabled ( by default ) as I checked :

Debian Multimedia :: Upgrade System From Jessie To Stretch - Second Screen Detection

Dec 31, 2015

I recently upgrade my system from Jessie to Stretch, with no problem. A little later I upgrades Enlightenment from e17 to e20, and at some point shortly after that the second screen stopped working.

The nvidia X Server Settings correctly identifies both screens. But Enlightenment and xrandr does not see the second one at all. The second screen are on and the pointer moves correctly onto it, but no activity with left or right click. I have tried with the original xorg.conf, and generated a new one with nvidia-xconfig, but no difference. No obvious errors in any log-files either.

Debian :: Some Windows Are Out Of Screen Using Compiz

Apr 29, 2010

I'm using debian lenny, my video card is an ATI x1300 series, I've installed compiz from the debian's repositories. All works fine except the next: Sometimes the windows appears out of screen, but this happens with windows related to the getfile function -for example: attach a file to an email, change the directory to download a file, seek some playlist file in "atun", etc.; so these windows appears in the top border of the screen, I can only watch the buttons "cancel" and "ok". I don't want to change the resolution every time this happens, so my question is: what should I change/edit to prevent this happen?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dual Screen, Compiz + Colour Calibration With 8600M GT?

Feb 6, 2011

After a few tries, I managed to install Ubuntu on my 3rd generation Macbook Pro (MacbookPro3,1). I installed the proprietary drivers for the Nvidia graphics card and got all the other features working with the information from this page. However, I am having various problems getting the screens working as I would like. When my laptop is at my desk, it is connected to an external 24-inch monitor via DVI, however I regularly disconnect this screen when I go to uni etc.

Ideally I would like Ubuntu to do the following (all of which I can do in Windows and Mac, or the equivalent thereof): Auto-detect when the external monitor is plugged in, set that monitor as the primary screen (with gnome panel etc). And auto-detect when it is unplugged and set the laptop screen as primary.
Support moving windows between both screens Compiz on both screens Separate colour calibration on each screen So far, I have only been able to get a subset of these working at once. I got 2 working alone, without any compiz and the colour calibration only worked on the laptop screen. I got 3 and 4 working without being able to move windows between screens. I have not been able to get 1 working at all - when I disconnect the monitor, I have to tell the nvidia control panel it is gone.

Is there any way to get all four of these things working? I would be willing to sacrifice 3 if 1, 2, and 4 were all working. (I posted this thread to Apple users as well, but I figure there will be more activity here).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Maverick 10.10 Gnome - Compiz - Screen Dims If Bad Keyboard Input - Ex - Del Key

Dec 14, 2010

Running 10.10 with compiz and gnome

The whole screen goes dim for any of the below examples. running "compiz --replace" fixes it until any of the below happens again. When the screen is dim, a new window opened (ex: firefox new window or a new gnome terminal) is full brightness while the rest of the screen stays dim.

Following causes the screen to go dim: In the screen saver - hit the delete key to backspace when the password field is empty. in firefox - ^f to find on a page - start typing and as soon as the find field has text that does not exist anywhere on the page "Phrase not found" the screen dims. in gnome terminal - the profile has the terminal bell checkbox ON - hit backspace on a bash input line with no text on it.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To FC13 - Initial Boot Failed - Just Blank Screen

Sep 19, 2010

I have just upgraded my FC12 installation to FC13. The initial boot failed (just blank screen). Second time I received 'selinux targeted policy relabel is required'. I let that run, but still the boot did not suceed.

I then went in to verbose boot and saw that the boot would hang at libvirtd. So I disabled libvirtd for anything above run level 1. Next boot failed at atd, disabled atd. Next boot failed at 'monthly Smolt checkin'.

At that point and booted in to single user mode and dissabled SELinux, thinking that was the cause of all the problems. That did not help.

The update process has also removed my previous kernels, so I can't test a different kernel

Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Antialiasing Causes Tearing?

I enabled 4x antialiasing, allow flipping and texture sharpening in nvidia settings, i also enabled all instances of sync to vblank in nvidia-settings i disabled dynamic twinview i also enabled sync to vblank in ccsm and manually set the refresh rate to 60hz the cube is smoother now, but when i move windows around, i get slight tearing at the edges, when i disable AA and restart compiz, the tearing goes away. There is no tearing when i move windows vertically: It only happens when i move horizontally:

Ubuntu Installation :: Manage An Upgrade Of An Adjacent OS

Feb 27, 2010

I've been dual booting Ubuntu and Windows for about a year now. I know that Windows is nasty and all, but game publishers haven't gotten the memo, and Windows 7 isn't that bad. How do I know? I've been using the trial. Except that runs out tomorrow, so I'm going to have to install the full version. Which leads to the problem:

If I install it onto the partition where I had the old install, will grub find it? Will it roach my Ubuntu partition?

If that won't work, it leads to a second problem: The Internet connection on that PC is so awful (for reasons that I'd rather not get involved in here), that I'd rather not, if I have to re-install Ubuntu, download all of the packages I have installed again. Is there a reliable way to back up (and, more importantly, restore) all of the libraries and programs?

Finally, if neither of those options are possible, is there a way to select the packages directly, and download them with a well-connected PC?

Debian Installation :: Failed To Upgrade From Lenny To Squeeze

Feb 3, 2010

I have tried several times--unscuccessfully-- to upgrade to the testing branch. I change my apt sources to "squeeze". I get either "err" or "ign" on a lot of the sources when updating. I have seen several methods as to how to upgrade from stable to testing and none have worked so far. I have tried "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade" as well as using aptitude to do the same similar commands. What I find is the following:

* My kernel never gets upgraded at all.

* udev is broken and mice and keyboard do not work.

* Many packages are held back and not upgraded.

I do have a debian 5 image to re-install and try again but I am not finding it to be as easy as many debian people claim. Also, I did a fresh install of squeeze using the net-install image. When the install finished and I rebooted, the computer hung on boot up. It never seemed to read where the kernel was. It would boot up, the system would beep and then reboot never finding the kernel or boot block apparently. how to get squeeze on my box? It is a 1.2 Ghz computer with 512mb ram with the intel i810 southbridge chipset I believe.
