Debian :: Install WineHQ In Testing / Wine Alternative In The Repositories?

Jul 16, 2011

I noticed that WineHQ doesn't exist in the Debian repositories. Or is there a Wine alternative in the repositories? If not, how can I install the latest stable version of Wine ?

it says here http://www.winehq.org/download/debian that some .deb packages need to be downloaded and manually installed, but I don't know how to install them...

Debian :: Debian Testing Vs Debian Stable With Testing Repositories?

Feb 28, 2009

I am a ubuntu user but I want to go to the next level to use debian because what I heard of it, but I get confused to what to install on my computer do I install debian testing or debain stable with testing repositories.

- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?

Bad clusters was an usual thing in the past, but today not anymore.Unfortunately debian squeeze installer coders had the good idea to remove the " bad cluster checking " before installing debian, during install (cdrom netinst).

Debian Configuration :: How To Best Manage Partitioning When Install Programs Not From Debian Repositories

Dec 4, 2010

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application. What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

Debian Installation :: Desktop Install Disk Go For Testing?

So where did the single CD, Desktop install disk go for testing?

Debian Hardware :: Testing Fails To Boot After Install On Ppc

Nov 14, 2015

I was planning on installing Stretch on my iBook G4. So I got my netinst cd and went through the install process. Everything was fine till I got to the section where I selected my mirrors. I chose the US/ftp.debian.org mirror and it failed so I tried the ftp.kernel.org and that failed as well. Then I tried the third on the list and I was able to connect and get my packages. The install completed, however when I rebooted the bootup froze. So I thought that it could my cd so I went and grabbed the latest stretch iso from the site.

Yet again I ran into issues. The biggest was that I kept getting sent back to install menu to manually select what steps I wanted to do. I found this odd since normally the install will just walk you through. Then I ran into the same issues with mirrors. finally the install completed and I was rebooted. However the boot failed again, but this I got dropped into the initramfs shell. Should I file this as bug with the debain-installer package?

Debian :: Fresh Testing Install: Display 'broken' After KDE Login

Feb 1, 2011

I have downloaded the latest testing image today (debian-testing-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso), install went just fine.

On boot, I get as far as the KDE login screen, where my user and password are seemingly accepted. Seemingly, as after this point, the screen is a complete mess. This 'mess' differs between attempts: it could be full of black and white squares, themselves made up of noise pixels; once it was like a normal screen after it had been through a blender, i.e. bits of the DE but awfully mixed up. (My judgement would be that the video pointers is set to point at the wrong part of memory... or is that my old-school point of view getting in the way? Whichever, it provides you with an idea of what it looks like.)

Running on an Nvidia GTS250 card, with two monitors (2 x DVI).

I have not installed any NV propriety drivers, as this is the first boot(s).

There is no xorg.conf present on the system; and I cannot find anything obvious in xorg.log (but then, I wouldn't know what to look for).

I use grub legacy, from my existing PCLOS partition (though this should not be an issue as I get as far as the KDE login screen, pretty as please).

Regarding the install itself, I took the above mentioned testing image as a way to get Squeeze. I assume this was the right way to do this at current time.

Ubuntu :: Errors Reported Bugs On Winehq

Sep 8, 2010

Currently I am running Ubuntu on my laptop however my desktop is still XP pro. I want to move from XP to a Linux (Ubuntu) or Unix distro (BSD). My desktop is used as my ftp server, music/network storage, and for syncing my iPod with iTunes. The only thing that is keeping me from totally reinstalling the OS on that computer is iTunes. I know there are tons of applications out there that will sync your music to your iPod however I want to still be able to use itunesu and some other features in iTunes. My plan is to run a *nix os but have xp running in virtual box for iTunes. Has anyone else done this and if you have is it a huge pain? Is there a better way to go about what I'm trying to do? I have tried to get the newer iTunes installers to work with wine but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I get errors and the errors are reported bugs on winehq.

Ubuntu :: WineHQ APPDB States That Rosetta Stone Is Not Installable

Oct 10, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and WINE 1.2. WineHQ APPDB states that Rosetta Stone is not installable. I have installed it, so the information there is not correct/complete. When I installed, it ran perfectly. I created an ISO of the install disc and the first lesson. I then loop mounted each of them in turn for them to run and assigned each of them a windows directory, configuring them as CD-ROM. This worked perfectly the first day. Now it no longer works with the ISO or with the original disc. I have run the program in terminal and received the following output:

Quote:
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {96749377-3391-11d2-9ee3-00c04f797396} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {96749377-3391-11d2-9ee3-00c04f797396} not registered

[Code].....

I have seen similar outputs on the forums, but nothing that included that AUDIO ERROR. This seems to be an issue of time. If I don't do anything, the program will crash giving me error 5118. If I run through lesson select and mic testing quickly then I can get all the way to the lesson before it crashes with the same error.

Debian :: Can't Remove Wine - Apt-get Bricked - Could Not Perform Immediate Configuration On 'wine-unstable'

Feb 16, 2011

while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :

dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb

The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :

dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb

This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details.
