Debian :: Compiz-Installproblems - Lnx 'newb'?
Mar 7, 2011
I'm affraid that the compiz forum might be dead already because of the massive spam there.. just found an old laptop @work i could now use for private stuff so i decided to install debian-squeeze + compiz (which i've first seen on a knoppix-cd in combination with lxde i think). So far... it's an Acer TravelMate 291LCi:Pentium M 1.4GHzIntel 855GM chipset'Modified' 60GB HDD (normally 30GB)256MB DDR SDRAMMy first steps -> I found out that squeeze got no xorg.conf :/ ... X -configure brought me some probs after i tried a different how-to's... so all ended up in a mess... :at-wits-end: Second step -> Brand new installation of debian squeeze-> booting Knoppix-CD and copied xorg.conf from knoppix to hdd...Then followed this How-To: http://www.surlyjake.com/2009/08/compiz ... n-squeeze/and installed compiz + ...Also checked customized xorg.conf I copied from Knoppix -> O.K!

installed debian yesterday my problem is when running debian lenny on a gateway t1628 laptop, my computers hard drive is always spinning when running debian andt caused the computer to over heat and shut down automaticly. At least I think its the hard drive. when I use vista I don't have this problem. It has over heated a few times but I was running a lot of processes and had the hard drive loaded with a bunch of resource hogging programs.I'm running the amd64 architecture. I also haven't been able to configure the network yet. I had problems with that on the install but I need to take one problem at a time and being able to run for extended periods of time is first and formost.

...but not just any kind of distro. Im talking about a text based distro where I will be able to write text only documents on a black screen as well as save them. I do not wish to run internet or anything else, just a text editor and a directory.

Im trying to install mupen64plus, but to be honest, everything i have installed is from the package manager.I have no idea how to do this through the terminal. But I tried installing the mupen64plus from the package manager, and everytime I open a rom, mupen64plus closes and doesnt load anything....
That version was 1.5, and I downloaded 1.99.3 or whatever it is from the mupen site, but I cant get the sucker to install. There is a install.sh file which I chmod +x too. I then tried, ,/install.sh, make install.

I installed Debian Sid yesterday, then I installed KDE. Now I want to install Compiz using this guide: http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz but it says I need to edit xorg.conf file, which doesn't exist for me. I'm trying to install Compiz for hours, so I think there is no other option for me than posting this problem.

I'm using debian lenny, my video card is an ATI x1300 series, I've installed compiz from the debian's repositories. All works fine except the next: Sometimes the windows appears out of screen, but this happens with windows related to the getfile function -for example: attach a file to an email, change the directory to download a file, seek some playlist file in "atun", etc.; so these windows appears in the top border of the screen, I can only watch the buttons "cancel" and "ok". I don't want to change the resolution every time this happens, so my question is: what should I change/edit to prevent this happen?

I have tried doing some research on the correct method of installing drivers and getting compiz to work. I have recently switched from ubuntu to debian. The thing I loved about ubuntu, was what compiz could do. Where to Get the correct drivers or instructions and all set up so that I may use CCSM and have a sweet desktop cube again?

I just got my new version of Debian, and under System>Preferences, near the top of the list, there should be a CompizConfig Settings Manager. But it's not there. I've tried apt-getting compiz, but it says I have the latest version out there. So I don't know what to do next.

I enabled Antialiasing in nvidia-settings and added "nvidia-settings -l" in a file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/, i knew it worked because sync to vblank works with glxgears and stuff. I enabled 4x antialiasing, allow flipping and texture sharpening in nvidia settings, i also enabled all instances of sync to vblank in nvidia-settings i disabled dynamic twinview i also enabled sync to vblank in ccsm and manually set the refresh rate to 60hz the cube is smoother now, but when i move windows around, i get slight tearing at the edges, when i disable AA and restart compiz, the tearing goes away. There is no tearing when i move windows vertically: It only happens when i move horizontally:
Debian stable 2.6.32-5 amd64
nvidia-glx 195.36.31-6 0
nvidia GT 230M

I re-installed Debian recently and I have a question about compiz. Is there any way to enable Compiz without replacing Metacity? I say this because using compiz --replace replaces all of my shortcuts and reduces my workspaces to two, it would even let me add more.

it happened first after upgrading about a week (|| more) ago. i thought that it's just em.. kinda normal (i'm running debian unstable, so such things are happening often).
but now it became a problem: i've tried reinstalling nvidia's drivers and compiz itself. no effect. also, i can't catch any errors in logs.

This morning i installed Debian Squeeze and I'm sure it that was a good choice! I got my wireless stick to work (Linksys: Wusb600n v2), installed Chromium, VLC and some other stuff... and ye. I want to get Compiz working on my system! I'm not sure that my current drivers can deal with it, thought. I'm not good at Linux and I don't know what should I install (if there is something) so that I can have get better performance from my video-card. I made HardInfo report of my system. What are my options? How can I make the performance better and, maybe, run Compiz?

I had a Compiz update two weeks ago, this update came from the official repository of Debian. So everyone had this update, this update did not had a positive effect. The extra plugins on both my desktop and laptop can't be enabled now. Such as Expo or the Animations. I can just use the basic stuff. There have been some partial upgrades ever since for Compiz, so I guess they are still working on it. But my question is; am I the only one?

Debian 5 64 bitGnome, using compiz-fusion.Compiz had been working well ever since I installed it last year; a couple of days back there was a debian update (I think and x-server update was there); now compiz does not work anymore. if I select compiz as the window manager from the cmpiz-fusion icon, I cannot move/resize wndows, the titlebar disappears.

After setting a new sid system with Compiz, I noticed the volume display shows a brown/maroon border around the icon. I payed no real mind until I installed Docky which really shows the issue. A solid patch of that same color on either side of the dock. When using Metacity the problem is gone, so I'm thinking it's a Compiz issue or video driver issue. I have an Intel chipset. I installed debian and want to install compiz (properly).Read this thread Compiz and followed the instruction to install the packages. It mentions xorg.conf which does not exist where it tells me to look.I can type "compiz --replace" and it does do something but all the window borders disappear. I tried compiz setting manager - still same problem. And no visual effects (presumably due to missing xorg.conf)

I`ve triple checked this and every time I run compiz any window opened has no minimise maximize or any other buttons for some reason but I don`t know why.If I exit compiz from the icon there are still no window buttons until I log out and then back in again. I can`t find this mentioned elsewhere but it`s happening every time in Squeeze AMD64 fresh installation having only downloaded AWN and compiz (tried this without AWN running and same result). It seems to have a drawing issue as if I run AWN then only three icons can show up on the dock any others are just thin white lines but I have no idea why my buttons dissappear. Anyone able to enlighten me?EDIT: Well I realised that by default the window decorations bit was not enabled, enabling it solves the first issue so the white lines instead of icons in AWN can`t be related so will look into that seperately.

I upgrade yesterday my lenny to squeeze.
Now I have some problem with compiz. When I do compiz --replace, I get:
compiz (core) - Fatal: Software rendering detected.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
Launching fallback window manager
Is it a driver problem? My ATI video card is one of them that works only with open driver and they seems corrrectly installed. glxinfo | grep render, give me a positive result.

I installed compiz with nvidia trouble is when I run compiz white bars or lines (bars) appear in open windows (icewease, gedit, etc.). They disappear after a few moment and reappear when scrolling a page. BTW everything works fine with metacity running as window manager.

I have the nvidia driver 173.14.09 installed. Running Debian Lenny stable x64 and turion x2 with a geforce 8200M G graphics card with dual screens. I first installed the debian repos compiz, then upgraded to the tuxfamily repo version. I installed the nvidia driver 190 from nvidia's website and that fixed it!

How to get compiz to auto-start. What seems to be the generally accepted method (from what a few google searches and the debian wiki tell me) of using gconf-editor and changing the window manager from 'gnome-wm' to 'compiz' in desktop > gnome > session > required_components doesn't change anything. The only method I found that did not involve using a terminal and running 'compiz --replace' every time I boot the computer was to add compiz and fusion-icon to the gnome startup apps, but this causes unwanted flickering (it starts metacity and then replaces it with compiz, ie it's simply automating what I would do with the terminal). Autostarting the fusion-icon alone does not start compiz, although it allows me to start it from it's menu if I right click the icon. Note that I sometimes use fluxbox as well, so starting it on boot isn't really an option either.
Perhaps this can be useful :
compiz:
Installed: 0.8.4-4
Candidate: 0.8.4-4
gnome-session:
Installed: 2.30.2-3
Candidate: 2.30.2-3
