Debian Multimedia :: Compiz With NVidia - White Bars And Screwed Rendering
Feb 12, 2010
I installed compiz with nvidia trouble is when I run compiz white bars or lines (bars) appear in open windows (icewease, gedit, etc.). They disappear after a few moment and reappear when scrolling a page. BTW everything works fine with metacity running as window manager.
Here is my xorg.conf:

I have the nvidia driver 173.14.09 installed. Running Debian Lenny stable x64 and turion x2 with a geforce 8200M G graphics card with dual screens. I first installed the debian repos compiz, then upgraded to the tuxfamily repo version. I installed the nvidia driver 190 from nvidia's website and that fixed it!

I installed compiz on squeeze. I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. I tried to install xterm, it can work, but it not easy to use for me, I still want to use gnome-terminal,
My laptop is lenovo Thinkpad T400. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series

I recently downloaded Frets On Fire and the HRP Polymer pack for Duke3D...Duke3D runs fine with just EDuke32 and no mods, just Duke3D and EDuke32. But when I try the HRP Polymer pack, it says in Terminal "NVIDIA: Direct Rendering failed, attempting indirect rendering." This is fine...if I want the game to lag like hell, I'm sure my video card and the driver for it support DR, the video card is a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200, the same message appears in terminal when I run Frets On Fire, I think it does with other games too, if someone could explain how to enable Direct Rendering.

i have ubuntu studio 10.04 installed and this is my second installation of the system. now that i have updated the system, got the fglrx drivers for my ATI HD5750, installed compiz-config-settings and glx-dock (aka cairo-dock). the first time i started the glx-dock, half of the dock was visible and it was distorted all over. so i ran compiz-config-settings for the first time and saw that it wasn't also working. then i tried to find a solution for a few valuable hours because it was essential to customize the feel of an OS but i think i have came to a point that i should stop trying to learn things that i see for the first time but ask and hope for the best (soon). anyway i should say that compiz and cairo dock was working the first time i installed the system. now when i run compiz-check, it gives the following output:
Code: Gathering information about your system...
Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04

Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc Device 68be

At least one check had to be skipped: Error: No rendering method in use (AIGLX, Xgl or Nvidia) ok AIGLX doesn't start, so i check Xorg.0.log and it says: (it has loaded and initialised AIGLX but maybe i misunderstand something, anyway you should see for yourself)

I got the nVidia driver and Compiz installed. Everything's running fine . But then I tried crtl+alt+F1 - which worked though the font was way too big - and then crtl+alt+F7 to get back to the Desktop but it went to a black screen and blinking cursor instead. I searched a bit and it seems this was a problem a few years back but nothing recent. FWIW, I don't have this problem with Hardy/nVidia/Compiz on another drive in this same machine. Is there a way to fix this?

I recently installed openSUSE 11.4 on my computer and laptop (both 64bit via dvd, one has AMD CPU and nVidia gpu, the other has intel cpu and graphics card). The problem is that when I move my mouse on close and minimize and maximize buttons of windows sometimes they aren't rendered correctly, and KDE menues aren't rendered correctly either, they mix with the background somehow. the menu problem goes away if I change the theme to plastik, but the window problem remains, here are links to some picture of what goes wrong in my system:

btw sorry that I uploaded them in ifile.it server, the other picture upload site like tinypic are blocked in my country
PS: Enabling or disabling desktop effects has no effect on the problem.

After being on the computer for awhile, it suddenly stops and goes to the purple screen like one would see when turning the computer on, only slightly distorted. after a few moments it switches to a black screen with a flashing _ but you can't type anything, and then it changes so it's blank, and these white bars start to flash on the screen. I just put 10.04 on my computer about two days ago, it's been doing it since. When I first tried to upgrade from 9.10 I encountered a huge error of some sort so I just put a brand new install onto the computer from CD.

I don't know if you have heard of Nvidia FREE Rendering program, called Nvidia Gelato.
I've logged on thw web, and tried to look it up on the web. I found the webpage, but all the download link's seem to be broken.

Does anyone know if this is happening for any reason? Am I missing something? If it is broken and there is no other solutionn, Can someone send me the Gelato 2.1 Rendering source for Ubuntu 9.10?

I downloaded an FLV video and placed an extra MP3 file over it. Two files. Total: 30 MBI experimented with about seven rendering containers, and QuickTime renderer was the only rendering container that didn't result in sped-up/compressed video or correct rendering for just fifteen seconds. How in the name of all that is holy did this rendering end up with 570 extra MB?

I've had a look and can't find this particular problem on the boards (feel free to correct me if there is something useful already though). I've recently got a Sony HDTV, and have hooked it up via HDMI to an Nvidia GeForce graphics card. Surprisingly enough, I'd like to watch movies/TV this way. However I'm experiencing flickery horizontal white lines on the desktop, and horizontal lines through video. I generally use VLC to play stuff, and have the 805 Nvidia proprietary driver installed.
So far I've tried:
Changing the resolution and refresh rate (Including the native TV ones)
Using Twinview, Separate X Screen and unplugging my monitor altogether.
Uninstalling the Nvidia Drivers and using the standard ones
Re-Installing the Nvidia Drivers
Xine Player
Changing video output of VLC to X11
Using Force scaling (I think, it's a tv-specific setting to compensate for differences in native resolution)
Switching desktop effects on and off
In short, it doesn't seem to be an issue with drivers, resolution, refresh rate, video files, codecs or players. How to stop these flickery lines as I wouldn't like to have to give up on the OS over one problem.

I prefer ubuntu (which I have been meaning to install for a while) but my netbook currently has linpus lite on it. (It's an acer aspire one). One night I left the netbook sitting open (forgot to close it), and when I went to use it the next day, when I started it up, the desktop did not show the normal icons in the background. It still showed the bar at the bottom with the connection icon, power icon, etc. as well as the "Internet" search bar in the top right corner.
But instead of the usual linpus desktop icons, there are just black and white horizontal bars, with some coloured dots in the black bars. I can still use the terminal to open firefox, and presumably other programs. It still connects to wifi signals, and the bottom bar looks normal and functional. I am posting this message right now with my netbook, and it doesn't seem to have lost any functionality. I would much rather just click on things most of the time instead of opening terminal for everything.

I installed with the image, running alongside Windows 7 on my desktop. I hadn't been in Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile, and hadn't experienced the 11.04 alpha's yet, so I didn't know there would be substantial changes. Obviously, Unity instead of Gnome surprised me a bit, but I have liked it so far.
But here lies the problem. I installed Compiz and ccsm through the software center, then went to enable the desktop cube and rotating cube. I clicked enable/disable on everything that popped up, but I think I must have disabled Unity (whoops). The whole desktop basically disappeared; that is, the dock on the left was gone and the window borders disappeared. I was able to close the windows with Alt+F4, but then couldn't open anything back up. The Super key didn't activate the dock, so it's not like it was hiding. I thought no problem, it'll start back up when I reboot. No dice. Still just the background, nothing to interact with. Only way to do anything is to reboot into with Ctrl+Alt+Dlt.
how do I fix this? Ha sorry for not reading forums beforehand, as I could've avoided this problem. Haven't found any threads on how to fix it, so I decided to start my own.

I get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

My computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu

I have opensuse 11.2 64 bit with the latest Nvidia drivers on a Gnome desktop; out of the box compiz 7.8 worked great. I had no intention of upgrading but I did with the upgrade to 8.4. Everything upgraded fine except I lost my menu bars on all screens when they were opened. I downgraded back down to 7.8 and still the same issue. Right now I have no compiz on so I can have have my menu bars. There is something I must be missing when I installed or reinstalled or upgraded compiz. I would like to get an original compiz setup that a fresh install gives.

Ever since I upgraded my video driver (the proprietary NVIDIA drivers) to 270.18, I have been experiencing lag when typing and when using Compiz as my WM. I can work around both problems by switching the WM to Metacity, but obviously I don't want to continue using that. I have tried changing my Compiz settings but to little avail. If you want my OS and graphics card, the OS is Ubuntu 10.10 and the graphics card is a NVIDIA GT 330M.

I am having some issues with my screen resolution. I am not sure if it is a monitor or graphics card issue. I believe I have the ATI x300 card. I am gunning a dell dimension E510. My monitor is a MAG Innovision. The screen resolution keeps changing. I had this same issue with 11.3. Also, the screen looks fuzzy in certain places, especially white areas and bars at the tops and bottoms of pages. By fuzzy, I mean it will be a color that doesn't belong there and it will kind of look like static, in either a line, or a blob, or just the whole box. I recently had to disable all desktop effects because they would make the screen unusable.

I have Compiz Config Settings Manager installed on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine. All the effects are working properly and everything is running fine. However when i play video with VLC Media Player, i would only get audio and no video. After looking this up i changed the output to X11 vidoe Output. I started getting video and audio. But when i switch to fullscreen mode the fullscreen video window is rendered by Compiz and thus has all of those window effects like wobbly, minimize, maximize and stuff are also applied to the full screen video. It also does not have all those controls that vlc normally shows when you wiggle your mouse in full-screen mode. I tried disabling the Video Playback option from the CCSM window, but to no avail.
The same thing also happens for the full screen view of Google Chrome. And the only way to leave full screen is to press F11 again. In this case the tab stacking area which drops down doesn't appear at all, also the exit full screen option which too drops down also does not appear. It seems Compiz is blocking all of those interactive buttons like the floating control panel in VLC and Tab stacking area in Chrome.

I'm noticing some odd rendering glitches under Iceweasle 3.5.16, with GNOME 2.30.2 running Debian 6.0 i386 default install.Google for example has an odd black bar that blinks, it almost seems like some odd selection bug (but I have not made any selection). Sometimes it doesn't appear other times right after starting Iceweasle it happens. Any ideas? It happens on other websites in random areas.

I have a geforce 8400GS and nvidia-current installed. However, the Additional Drivers app advises that "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and that the driver is activated but not in use. I know other people have complained about this problem, but for me this is breaking 3D content and I can't get compiz to work either. When I try to start compiz manually (compiz --replace), I get this error:
Code: compiz (code) - Fatal: Couldn't open display My Xorg has nvidia as device driver. I'm using the NVIDIA X Server settings program to setup my two monitors, so I know that this is what is in use. In addition to the compiz problem (which I can get over), sometimes I can see the desktop background through the active window. It's hard to explain so I'll take a screenshot when it happens again. Things I've tried:
1. Installing nvidia's latest drivers - The installer was extremely picky, constantly complaining about other modules and drivers. After I finally managed to remove everything it didn't like and install it, X wouldn't load.
2. Reinstall nvidia-current - tried multiple times with no change.
3. Link /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so.270.41.06 - didn't make a difference.

After upgrading to Natty from the previous version and switching to Ubuntu Classic my compiz settings were completely wiped out. No problem, I just re-entered them. The problem is that I don't get any menu bar on my windows. It also happens once in a while in Metacity but using the compiz fusion icon utility to reload the window manager will usually fix the issue. I have had this problem intermittently in the past but have always been able to resolve it by reloading the window manager. Now when I'm using compiz I ALWAYS have this issue and it makes compiz unusable. Compiz is not just eye-candy for me, it has become integral to the way I use my computer. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.

Alright ... recently switched from Ubuntu with FF 4.0 to Debian with Iceweasel which I had to upgrade to 4.0 since I really liked the way it worked on Ubu 10.10 ... but I'm having some really strange rendering issues. Flash is not a problem at all, works fine on all flash sites that I've checked out. Some sites though, including this Debian forum, do not show everything in the Iceweasel browser window.
For example, sometimes I'll be browsing on a page with huge chunks of white, clearly indicating that "something" should be in those spaces. When I look at those same pages with Chrome or Opera, everything is filled the way it should be ... all content is displaying properly.
On some sites, like this forum, the rendering is even worse because not only do some items not show up, but in addition most of the links don't work at all. For example, if I use Iceweasel 4.0 to look at the board index of this forum, I can't click on any of the links, not the links in the main sections anyway. If I open up Chrome (that's what I'm using to write this) or Opera, the problem is gone.
What the heck is going on, does anyone know? Is this an Iceweasel bug? Am I missing some package update? I'd hate to have to switch my preferred browser just because this weirdness is going on. At first I thought it was a fluke, specific to a site or two only, but at this point I've seen these rendering issues on about 10 sites ...

I just installed nVidia GT440 w/ NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run driver on my Scientific Linux on two of my workstation and one of workstation sound disappeared. Both workstations are identical though in terms of hardware and OS (Scientific Linux).
I'm not really sure where to look, but here is dmesg from workstation where sound isn't working:[URL]..whenever I go to System -> Preference -> Sound -> Output on broken workstation I only see "HDA NVidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)" and my old/onboard sound card is missing.
I actually did roll out of same Video Card to more then just 2 workstation, I did that to a 5. Only 2 of them sound working as expected. 1 of them didn't even needed to install nVidia drivers but that workstation running slightly newer OS version 6.1 instead of rest 6.0, so I'm back to where I started it ... clueless ;(
