Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Refuses To Auto Start Properly (with Gnome)

Apr 16, 2011

How to get compiz to auto-start. What seems to be the generally accepted method (from what a few google searches and the debian wiki tell me) of using gconf-editor and changing the window manager from 'gnome-wm' to 'compiz' in desktop > gnome > session > required_components doesn't change anything. The only method I found that did not involve using a terminal and running 'compiz --replace' every time I boot the computer was to add compiz and fusion-icon to the gnome startup apps, but this causes unwanted flickering (it starts metacity and then replaces it with compiz, ie it's simply automating what I would do with the terminal). Autostarting the fusion-icon alone does not start compiz, although it allows me to start it from it's menu if I right click the icon. Note that I sometimes use fluxbox as well, so starting it on boot isn't really an option either.

Perhaps this can be useful :
compiz:
Installed: 0.8.4-4
Candidate: 0.8.4-4
gnome-session:
Installed: 2.30.2-3
Candidate: 2.30.2-3

Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Antialiasing Causes Tearing?

Jun 25, 2011

I enabled Antialiasing in nvidia-settings and added "nvidia-settings -l" in a file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/, i knew it worked because sync to vblank works with glxgears and stuff. I enabled 4x antialiasing, allow flipping and texture sharpening in nvidia settings, i also enabled all instances of sync to vblank in nvidia-settings i disabled dynamic twinview i also enabled sync to vblank in ccsm and manually set the refresh rate to 60hz the cube is smoother now, but when i move windows around, i get slight tearing at the edges, when i disable AA and restart compiz, the tearing goes away. There is no tearing when i move windows vertically: It only happens when i move horizontally:

Debian stable 2.6.32-5 amd64
nvidia-glx 195.36.31-6 0

I had a Compiz update two weeks ago, this update came from the official repository of Debian. So everyone had this update, this update did not had a positive effect. The extra plugins on both my desktop and laptop can't be enabled now. Such as Expo or the Animations. I can just use the basic stuff. There have been some partial upgrades ever since for Compiz, so I guess they are still working on it. But my question is; am I the only one?

Debian Multimedia :: Compositing Artifiacts With Compiz - Docky?

Mar 8, 2011

After setting a new sid system with Compiz, I noticed the volume display shows a brown/maroon border around the icon. I payed no real mind until I installed Docky which really shows the issue. A solid patch of that same color on either side of the dock. When using Metacity the problem is gone, so I'm thinking it's a Compiz issue or video driver issue. I have an Intel chipset. Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Takes Away Window Buttons In Squeeze?

May 24, 2010

I`ve triple checked this and every time I run compiz any window opened has no minimise maximize or any other buttons for some reason but I don`t know why.If I exit compiz from the icon there are still no window buttons until I log out and then back in again. I can`t find this mentioned elsewhere but it`s happening every time in Squeeze AMD64 fresh installation having only downloaded AWN and compiz (tried this without AWN running and same result). It seems to have a drawing issue as if I run AWN then only three icons can show up on the dock any others are just thin white lines but I have no idea why my buttons dissappear. Anyone able to enlighten me?EDIT: Well I realised that by default the window decorations bit was not enabled, enabling it solves the first issue so the white lines instead of icons in AWN can`t be related so will look into that seperately.

Is it a driver problem? My ATI video card is one of them that works only with open driver and they seems corrrectly installed. glxinfo | grep render, give me a positive result.

Debian Multimedia :: Failed Script Prevents Lightdm From Starting

Apr 23, 2016

I'm using MATE with Lightdm as display manager in Jessie and I've been using a very simple script run from /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/01_debian.conf to slow down the mouse cursor, something like

Code: Select all#!/bin/bash

xinput --set-prop 10 269 -1

xinput --set-prop 10 267  1.100000
the script was placed in my ~ and called from 01_debian.conf , and so far it used to work.

Lately this script wasn't executed properly, most likely because I had unplugged the mouse from its usb port and then plugged again in a different port, and as a result Lightdm wouldn't start at all.

After much trying, because this by coincidence happened after the update to 8.4, I realized that it wasn't a serious failure of the X server as I suspected (the update included a new version of the flgrx driver), but a simple matter of Lightdm failing because of this script: in fact, I could still manually start the session with startx as regular user, although this only gave me access to a LXDE session instead of MATE (I have also the LXDE environment because when I installed Jessie I did use the LXDE version and then added MATE).

What happened was that the mouse properties were scrambled up, so xinput --set-prop 10 269 -1 had now to be something like xinput --set-prop 10 268 -1 and so on - therefore the script failed and in turns Lightdm failed as well.

-is this supposed to happen when you unplug the mouse and then plug it back in a different usb port? It reminds me of some windows-like behavior, where usb peripherals had to be always in the same port to work properly.

-is Ligthdm supposed to fail because of this, or is it kind of a bug? It looks weird to me that instead of simply not executing the script, the whole display manager fails.

In testing, with an identical setup, as a matter of fact the script failed as well (it's on another partition on the same hardware) but Lightdm started as usual.

-when trying to modify the mouse properties in that script, I couldn't get them right again: what looked correct in the booted system, was once again off at the next reboot (i.e. property 269 was 270 again and so on), therefore I ditched the above setup and placed everything in the .xsessionrc file, and it worked again.

-why startx defaulted to the LXDE environment? where is this setting stored? How could I have specified to start a MATE session instead from command line?

Debian Multimedia :: Nvidia Legacy 96 - Starting Gdm - Xserver Fails

I recently installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I have a problem starting gdm. Then, after waiting the screen flash between the tty and a black screen a few times;

i'm on the tty, from where I can "startx" without problem. I tried using the nv driver and gdm worked.. so i think it has relation with the nvidia drivers... If I start gdm from the tty, instead of using the startx command, then gdm appears but if I try to log in.. all freezes up.. Here's my xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig: [URL]

Fedora :: Raid Not Auto-starting After Kernel Update

Jan 25, 2010

I updated my fc12 x86_64 server today, and one of the updated included kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64 from the previous one of kernel-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64.When I boot with that kernel, it stops when my logical volumes that are built on a raid 5 array (linux software raid built using mdadm) are not there.I can start them afterward with mdadm --auto-detect which seemingly loads the appropriate modules and starts the array, but I have never had to do this before.

Reading the mdadm man page, it mentions that this is generally done by the initrd. So, I am guessing the initrd that came with the new kernel is missing something.
