it happened first after upgrading about a week (|| more) ago. i thought that it's just em.. kinda normal (i'm running debian unstable, so such things are happening often).
but now it became a problem: i've tried reinstalling nvidia's drivers and compiz itself. no effect. also, i can't catch any errors in logs.
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and trying to use OpenOffice 3.1. If I run OpenOffice, after 10 minutes or so, the whole computer freezes. Even if I have shut down OpenOffice it still happens. Only answer is to turn computer off and on again. I read some other people's posts listing the same problem and as a result uninstalled Open Office and then installed it again. I also uninstalled Compiz. Neither of these seem to be the solution. I have just installed Lotus Symphony and there are no problems with freezing and so the issue is definately with OO and Ubuntu.
I then on further advice uninstalled the bundled Ubuntu version of OpenOffice and installed directly from the OpenOffice website. The problem still remains. Next thing I tried was to uncheck autosave feature. The above problems only happen on my desktop. I also have an ASUS EEE Netbook running Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook remix. This is fine - the problem does not seem to affect the netbook. I would really like to continue to use OO - I like it a lot. Unfortunately this freezing issue is making it unusable.
Xorg takes 700+ mbs of ram, then in matter of hours it fills the swap and then system basically stops responding or whatever. And because its constantly allocating, it degrades perforamce horribly.Interesting thing is I never had this problem before, recently one of my ram modules broke (2+2 GB) and now I have only one, but it still doesnt explain the memory overuse. Windows 7 works perfectly fine.

This apparently causes gnome to use the Gnome icon theme on boot, instead of the Humanity theme I selected in Preferences->Appearance. I just have to go to Preferences-Appearance again to get the Humanity theme back to work (I don't even have to change any settings, just going there is enough.) When I remove awn from my startup applications, this problem doesn't occur.

What seems to be the generally accepted method (from what a few google searches and the debian wiki tell me) of using gconf-editor and changing the window manager from 'gnome-wm' to 'compiz' in desktop > gnome > session > required_components doesn't change anything. The only method I found that did not involve using a terminal and running 'compiz --replace' every time I boot the computer was to add compiz and fusion-icon to the gnome startup apps, but this causes unwanted flickering (it starts metacity and then replaces it with compiz, ie it's simply automating what I would do with the terminal). Autostarting the fusion-icon alone does not start compiz, although it allows me to start it from it's menu if I right click the icon. Note that I sometimes use fluxbox as well, so starting it on boot isn't really an option either.

I got the nVidia driver and Compiz installed. Everything's running fine . But then I tried crtl+alt+F1 - which worked though the font was way too big - and then crtl+alt+F7 to get back to the Desktop but it went to a black screen and blinking cursor instead. I searched a bit and it seems this was a problem a few years back but nothing recent. FWIW, I don't have this problem with Hardy/nVidia/Compiz on another drive in this same machine. Is there a way to fix this?

I have a rather odd problem. Ubuntu 11.04 came installed with the nvidia 173 drivers, which I replaced with the current ones. Neither loaded Unity, so I downloaded Nvidia's 270.41.06 drivers from their website. Still no unity.
If I run compiz --replace, however, compiz works fine, and Unity loads, albeit extremely buggy, most likely because all of the gnome components are still running (e.g., if I click anywhere on the top panel, it goes away).
Why gnome would make my resolution so much bigger than it actually is (2x my native). I can actually use the other half of my screen. I have to scroll over to the left half, and then I can work like normal. If I wanted to have a black screen, I can drag the courser over to the far right and have my screen be entirely black. I cannot open anything in the black part of the screen.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files.When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.

I installed compiz on squeeze. I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. I typed the metacity --replace command in Maverick to turn off compiz so I could change compiz files for the "mac minimize" effect. The default Ubuntu installation had compiz working but now it won't work at all. I tried downloading the proprietary driver from "system --> additional drivers" as well, but it said it failed to install.

Im using rtorrent on my 2.97ghz celeron D with 512mb ram and 160gb hd (ide) and when im downloading with rtorrent the cpu goes 85-100% usage and the whole computer get slow. iv got 100mbit download.. so i download in 11.4MB/s.. could it be the harddrive? using debian 5.. fresh install..

1) It's integrates better with the gnome-desktop.
2) It follows release cycles of Gnome.
Since the devs and admins won't listen, we users have to clean their **** up and this is the howto - In Ubuntu, the gnome-screensaver is running; but xscreensaver is better, so we need to replace it. The gnome-screensaver runs as a daemon...removing this gnome-screensaver package will remove this executable also -

Would it be possible to replace all the gnome panels with docky? i need to be able to access my applications,places,system in the top panel and my wifi manager but other than that docky does everything else, is there a way to get the above mentioned in docky?

THE PROBLEM : gnome 3 freeze sometimes, the PC is freeze (the mouse doesn't move when i move the mouse. I must power down my PC for re-activate it. I want to shift to gnome 2 (i think gnome3 is excellent but it don't work) but it seems to be impossible. What i can do ? I've got excited when I saw the possibilty to use my Owncloud account (my server is installed on a Digital Ocean cloud machine) directly on the system configuration.
Well, I added the acount there and my owncloud webdav folder appeared on Nautilus everytime I turn my PC on, what's great. So I've started to save my Libreoffice docs on the cloud, believing that I finally got free from google docs.
i'm using Fedora 12, 32 bit, kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE while using add-remove program to install programs, my desktop frezes, the keyboard becomes unusable, can't do anything so i have to do a hard boot.
