I'm currently running Hardy and XP in a dual boot setup. I want to install Lucid but don't want to overwrite my working Hardy partition and am worried by the number of reported problems with Grub2. XP is currently taking up all of my first hard drive. Second hard drive is : Hardy, then swap, then separate /home. After a bit of research, does this sound like a good plan ? ...
- Use gparted from the Live CD to shrink my Windows partition (then make sure XP still boots OK )
- Create a new partition after XP on drive 1
- Install Lucid in this new partition, using Advanced option, and tell it use my existing swap and home partitions on drive 2 (with no format, of course)
- Write Grub to this new partition
- Boot Hardy, and edit grub manually ( or use StartUp Manager, will it detect Lucid and add it as an option ? )
- Reboot and get options for Hardy, XP, and Lucid.
Does that sound correct, especially the Grub bits? When I'm happy that Lucid is OK I'll probably install Grub from it to the MBR.
I installed Matlab in Ubuntu 10.10. I was able to get it running and I saw the initializing screen. However it showed me an error with OpenGL

and it freezes there. I tried many things to get over with it and it didn't work.

I know the network card works because Windows and the Parted Magic Live cd recognize it. Also "lspci" seems to list the card, but when I fire "ifconfig -a" it is not listed there.
View 12 Replies View RelatedCurrently my new server pc (Mobo - ASRock H97M-ITX/AC) is not connecting to the network and it seems to be due to the network card alx drivers. I have downloaded the compat drivers and backports associated with the issue in other posts and on other forums but haven't been able to get it running.
When I install a usb drive of any type to try and transfer the drivers over I get the messages "443.057769 sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write though" & "443.057769 sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page found".

I'm trying to install Wheezy on a Thinkpad T23. want to use Fluxbox, so during installation I uncheck the graphics options because I can install X and fluxbox later. After the install, the first time it boots up it can connect to the wired network and it will download things. But, if I reboot then it somehow loses its ability to connect to any wired network (and the T23 doesn't have built in wireless, so it obviously can't connect to wifi). there something that I can do to get ethernet back? Or, is there a way to, while I'm still on the first reboot, permanently install the ethernet drivers?I'm finally trying tmove away from Windows because a friend happened to show me his laptop which was running the free and open alternative to OneNote (Xournal) that I've been needing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedCompletely new to Linux. I have two PC (both with Windows XP SP3) and an HP printer that are networked together with Ethernet cables and a 2Wire gateway. I now would like to install Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.6 on one of the computers and make it a dual-boot machine. The other PC will remain with Windows XP only. During the installation of Debian (5.0.6, 64-bit), I am asked to supply the domain name of the network.
It tells me that I can make up a name but to make sure to use the same domain name on all the computers. I have set up what Windows calls a Workgroup so that the two PCs can have access to each other's files. Would the name that I had assigned to the workgroup in Windows be what Debian is asking me about? The end result is that I want to be able to access Windows files and folders using Debian and vice-versa.
I am using mini.iso to install Jessie from network and I need lose setup command that is required by cryptsetup for mounting the detached header of an encrypted volume. I have a new Thinkpad T520 from work and am trying to put Debian 6 on it. I previously had a Thinkpad T42 and was able to install Debian 6. I recall having to find the driver and install it separately, so I downloaded all of the non-free drivers, but the network detection step doesn't seem to let me select my own driver.
I've been thru this at least 4 times, both the standard 6.01 and the AMD64 bit version, both behave the same. This has the (unfortunately) the Thinkpad b/g/n wireless card, but the wired ethernet is the Intel 82579LM gigabit. Seems there would be a driver with Debian 6 that would support that one.I can't stand running Windows 7.
Router works fine, debian refuses to work with it. I continued the install anyway but only have the first DVD so now I've got a useless base install that can't connect to the internet.
The fact that this installer has utterly failed where the others succeeded had drastically reduced my confidence in the debian team.
I'm using the debian testing netinst image (from below url) and trying to install on virtualbox (part of a debian testing vagrant base box build pipeline I've got). This hasn't worked properly for last couple of weeks. Host system is also debian testing.URL....
if I accept all the defaults through the installer (apart from small details like timezone), I end up with a system in which the network does not work. It seems that /etc/network/interfaces has eth0 but the actual network card is called enp0s3, so no network comes up at first boot (despite that the network works fine during the actual install). I can easily fix it after the first boot by editing /etc/network/interfaces and replacing eth0 by enp0s3 and then doing an ifup. This is fine for a workaround but begs the question of why does it fail in the first place.
I have googled a bit and found this thread: [URL] .... which describes a similar issue, and there are other threads out there describing the change.
The udev change seems reasonable enough, but also some package involved in basic debian netinst installation has a bug given that the default install path results in a broken system. Question is, is there a bug already reported (I couldn't find it), or else, which package should I report the issue against? End result should be basic install does not require editing after boot to fix the network.

Loaded Debian Jessie (x64) and when adding printers, can see my printer which attached ok to my RaspberryPi and can print thru it, but can not attach to my Jessie box. If it adds, it can't see it or reports printer is busy, tried every config I could find on the web. Previous versions of Debian I loaded the canon print driver separately and loaded the cnij(?) filter. Do I still have to do that? Is there a trick to getting a network canon to work?

1. Where can I find the additional files to install?
2. Where can I find a manual that tells you how to install them? This manual doesn't say anything about that.
3. Are you supposed to install the files during the installation process, or do you get them online through the minimal Debian (using wget, etc.)?
