Debian Installation :: Failed In Network Initialization

Jan 20, 2010

I'm trying to install Debian 5.03 from the netinstall on a usb flash disk. When it gets to the network initialization step, it fails and cannot get an IP from DHCP. Manual configuration does not work either. Out of desperation I installed windows to see if the network device was broken (this is a new motherboard), however it works fine without drivers even. Invoking lspci shows that it is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Etherent Controller (revision ff)

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Upgrade - DMA Initialization Failed

Jan 9, 2010

I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04; 2 days ago using an alternaate CD. Everything went fine and after the install I ran System Update and got all the latest updates too. Now when I boot the PC to Ubuntu, after a while it pops up a dialog box, saying:
Code:
Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode, you may need to update your configuration to solve this:

The screen is also in a frame, it never fits the monitor screen completely, however I can change the screen resolutions, it displays
Code:

There is also the problem with compiz, I'm unable to turn on the Visual effects. I do not have any propriety Grpahic Driver Cards, just the default provided by Intel.

General :: 10Gbps NIC Initialization Failed

May 20, 2011

OS RedHat 5.5, Server Model: HP Proliant DL 380 G7

We swapped our 10Gig NIC Cards (Qlogic) with Emulex NIC cards NC550SFP. The server was rebooted and I get the following message:

dmesg | grep -i "emulex"
be2net 0000:18:00.0: Emulex OneConnect 10Gbps NIC initialization failed
be2net 0000:18:00.1: Emulex OneConnect 10Gbps NIC initialization failed

Earlier when there was Qlogic, we configured the two NIC cards for eth2 and eth3.

Now, in order for this server to show up these NICs, I used ifcfg -a and configured ifcfg-eth2 and ifcfg-eth3 and did a service network reload. The interface came up and all worked good.

But after the Qlogic was replaced with the Emulex and when I perform ifcfg -a, I don't see eth2 and eth3 or neither they are shown as some other names such as __tmp. I can't find the MAC addressess that are associated with them.

Is there any way that we can initialize these NIC cards and make them available in ifcfg -a so that, I can edit the mac ids of these NICs and configre ifcfg-eth2 and ifcfg-eth3.

Debian Installation :: Network Autoconfig Failed Even With Ethernet Cable

Jan 1, 2015

Router works fine, debian refuses to work with it. I continued the install anyway but only have the first DVD so now I've got a useless base install that can't connect to the internet.

The fact that this installer has utterly failed where the others succeeded had drastically reduced my confidence in the debian team.

CentOS 5 :: File Based Locking Initialization Failed - No Volume Groups Found

May 5, 2011

I'm working on a kickstart install to automate a lot of monotony doing installs. When i use the kickstart install i get an error on boot saying "File based locking initialization failed" "no volume groups found". Then it proceeds to boot up with no issues and appears to work just fine. Below is the section of my ks.cfg for creating the partitions: %include /tmp/partition.cfg is included where the partition info usually occurs. The user is prompted in the pre script for how large they would like the partitions to be and then the script below creates the included file with partition info

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount Sshfs After Network Initialization?

Apr 8, 2011

I've got a non-vital sshfs filesystem in my fstab (by non-vital I mean just files that I access on-demand).However, the fstab file seems to get read and things try to mount before the network has been brought up. I recently switched to Kubuntu 10.10 from Arch, and Arch didn't display this behaviour.I'm wondering if it's possible to make it mount the sshfs filesystem AFTER the network has been brought up?

Earlier I have no problems when I install opensuse. After installation the network runs and I can run online updating in yast for the system. But since a few version it doesn't work after installation and I don't know why. I think maybe the errors could happen because I have no
internet connection. Today I install 11.4 and get this message when I want to run online updates in yast.

There is an error in the repository initialization
'repo-update' [URL]

I think this problem stars with 11.1 or 11.2.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error: "Network Autoconfiguration Failed. Your Network Is Probably Not Using The DHCP Protocol

I made it through the the partitioning part but now I'm getting a networking error: "Network autoconfiguration failed. Your network is probably not using the DHCP protocol. Alternatively, the DHCP server may be slow or some network hardware is not working properly."

I've been using the wireless connection in win 7 without any problem so I don't know why I'm having a problem now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Initialization Screen Appearing In Low Resolution

May 2, 2010

I did a dist-upgrade from Karmic to Lucid. Everything *seems* to be running OK, but there's one thing that's really nerve wrecking: When I boot my computer, the "Loading" screen - before the splash screen where everything is initialized shows up - appears on an absurdly low resolution (not sure exactly which). So the graphics are awful, the text is too big and so on.

Aside from that, before the Loading screen shows up - right after "GRUB is loading" - a lot of characters (like plus signs) fill two lines of the screen. I think this might also be because of the resolution. So bottom line is:
1) Is there a way to fix this?
2) Should I be concerned enough to go with a full fresh install?

Debian Configuration :: Failed Ifupdown Update Now No Gnome / No Network

Jan 11, 2016

I ran my daily update of Debian Stretch using Synaptic, and when done had an un-installed update for ifupdown remaining marked in the list. By right clicking I was able to get Synaptic to say it would install the update, along with quite a few other updates. In the process of doing this, my screen went dark and stayed dark. On reboot, I get the Grub menu to select which Linux system I want to boot, but whichever one I choose, including older ones, I get to a command line, not the Gnome GUI.

I tried to complete the update of ifupdown using apt-get, only to discover that my machine no longer has any network connection, let alone Internet.

How do I begin to troubleshoot this?

Debian Configuration :: Network - Access Servers Request Failed

Feb 1, 2010

I recently installed two PC with debian lenny (kernel 2.6.26). One is called serveur-debian1 and the second one serveur-debian2. I have installed gnome, samba, mysql5, apache2, php5, and Virtualbox,bridge-tools on them. On serveur-debian2, i installed an other virtual debian lenny with apache2,mysql5,php5,nagios and centreon on it to view my network. I remember having installed a soft to access nntp on serveur-debian2 in order to test nagios.

Since a few days, i have problem to access to my servers. rom my windows 7 client, i try to ping serveur-debian1. Response is OK but not for all resquets Always from the same computer, i try to ping serveur-debian2. Response is OK but not for all again.

When i launch a ping on serveur-debian1 and serveur debian2 at the same time i have:

serveur-debian2: response OK
ping 15 to 25: serveur-debian1: respone OK

Debian Installation :: Installation Failed On Mobo Gigabyte G41M-ES2H?

Aug 1, 2010

explain the following issue I have with Debian IA 64:I tried on a PC (Mobo Gigabyte G41M-ES2H, core 2 duo, 4 GB RAM DDR2) the live CD of Debian Lenny IA64 and everything worked just fine, which was a very good thing because none of all other major ia64/i386 distros of Linux (Mandrake, ubuntu, fedora) did so. In a nutshell it seems that the IGP G41 chipset is the cause of these setup failure (Everything is OK when using a PCI-e graphic card that I need in another computer)rd as someone (viewtopic.php?=17&t=49186&p=282839&hilit=G41M+ES2H#p282839) successfully installed Lenny on a very similar mobo. To go to the point what I do not understand is when I launch the iso Cd to now install the same version of Debian, everything freezes at the very beginning of the boot and the screen goes blank.

Debian Installation :: HD Failed To Partition

I have now tried twice, with the same results, to install Debian 8.2.0 onto my hard drive. Each time it went through the installation as if everything was working. But, when it rebooted, it came up in grub rescue mode. When I do an "ls" command, it only shows the hard drive and no partition information. When I do an "ls (ho0,1)" it reports no such partition.

When is my installation failing? Why is it not partitioning the hard drive and loading the OS? Obviously it can write to the disk or else grub wouldn't come up at boot.

Debian Installation :: Wheezy - Installer Failed On Grub

Nov 23, 2014

I am installing Whezzy and the installer failed to install grub on the MBR of /dev/sda

My disks are
- /dev/sda : the flash drive with the debian ISO
- /dev/sbd : a small SSD for the / partition (sdb1)
- /dev/sdc + /dev/sdd : a software RAID-1 array with LVM for /home, ...

Grub fails to install on /dev/sda which makes sense since this is the flash drive containing the Debian ISO so no MBR.

I already tried to run grub-update manually on /dev/sdb (with chroot /target grub-install --no-floppy --force "/dev/sdb" ).

It works but the system is not directly bootable. I had access to a second PC to read the grub documentation so was able to boot and to fix my system but this is annoying.

Is it normal to see my flash drive as /dev/sda? Could it be that my flash drive is incorrectly detected as a HD?

Is there a way to force the installer to install grub on /dev/sdb?

Debian Installation :: Failed Install On HP / Blinking Cursor

Apr 20, 2015

I've been tooling around in linux on and off since I discovered KNOPPIX 3.2. No linux distro has ever been a daily driver for me, though I wish sometimes it were.I've tried many distros over the past couple weeks via virtualBox on my mac and decided to install Debian on my laptop. I've tried multiple times and it has always failed; quite disappointing.

Laptop Specs;
HP Pavilion dv7 3169wm
64 bit AMD Turion II Ultra M620 2.50 GHz Dual-core

I started the install via the live ISO as the netinst & the DVD versions both failed, either by no suitable kernel or just flat out "installing base system failed". I've now found my computer to boot past the POST splash screen , and then to a black screen with a line cursor blinking with no input/output ability. To be clear, I did use uNetBootin to create the USB, and have successfully installed, and used multiple other distros (ubuntuMate, mint, peppermint, Arch, elementary) without issue, or at least nothing I couldn't fix.

How can I get past this and attempt to install Debian? I'd put my linux knowledge at a "beginner" stat, but I'm by no means daft about electronics and computers.
