While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.

I am running 8.04 on a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop. (My Toshiba model is unfortunately the one with the Phoenux BIOS)I have been happy with 8.04 LTS for quite some time now and was thinking of upgrading to 10.04 LTS, which the Update Manager says is available. I normally choose to upgrade a few months after release once things have stabilised a bit. I figured it was now time for 10.04.I accordingly have first taken all the updates for 8.04 and brought it up-to-date. Then when I click on Upgrade, I get the following messageUpgrading may reduce desktop effects and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs. This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardwarein Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Do you want to continue ?Since I wasn't sure of the exact entire implications, I said NO and exit the upgrade at that point.I then googled a bit and found this to be a pretty serious installation issue with a number of people who unfortunately have ATI display cards. But then I came across this page:Does the above link mean that this problem is now solved with respect to 10.04 as well ?Also, if not, what are the implications for me ? Does this mean I have to be stuck on 8.04 only ?If I choose to upgrade anyway, what display functionality will I lose ?I don't need Desktop Effects or other toys. But I do use GIMP quite a bit and also watch videos in multiple formats. Will I not be able to do these ?

I recently read a post and the comments in Linux Magazine concerning other browsers outside of firefox and chrome. Midori, Dillo, Kazehakase, and Netsurf were in the synaptic package manager so I installed them. Does anyone use the Amaya, Arora, or Uzbl browsers and what are they like?

I had been using Amaya on Slackware 13.1 32bit with no problems. I then upgraded to 64 bit, basically because of one program. Now, I cannot run Amaya. It crashes X. In my efforts to solve this I cannot find an X log with entries related to the crash. The console after the crash only shows the last lines of the output. I cannot scroll back to view the source of the errors. Is there a way to redirect error output from an X crash to a file for later analysis?

I'm currently running Hardy and XP in a dual boot setup. I want to install Lucid but don't want to overwrite my working Hardy partition and am worried by the number of reported problems with Grub2. XP is currently taking up all of my first hard drive. Second hard drive is : Hardy, then swap, then separate /home. After a bit of research, does this sound like a good plan ? ...
- Use gparted from the Live CD to shrink my Windows partition (then make sure XP still boots OK )
- Create a new partition after XP on drive 1
- Install Lucid in this new partition, using Advanced option, and tell it use my existing swap and home partitions on drive 2 (with no format, of course)
- Write Grub to this new partition
- Boot Hardy, and edit grub manually ( or use StartUp Manager, will it detect Lucid and add it as an option ? )
- Reboot and get options for Hardy, XP, and Lucid.
Does that sound correct, especially the Grub bits? When I'm happy that Lucid is OK I'll probably install Grub from it to the MBR.

When trying to do an update or upgrade, I get the following:
Running Transaction Warning: RPMDB has been altered since the last yum transaction. Traceback (most recent call last):

I have tried yum clean all, yum clean metadata, rpm --rebuilddb, and even removing /var/cache/yum. yum info and yum list both work fine. Naturally, this yum problem is preventing me from updating my system.

I have tried Fedora 13 on my usb pen before installing and found it much nicer to use than Ubuntu.I do have an external dvdrw to install this if its easier. My query is..How do i dual boot this? I tried but every option i see isnt the option i want. I dont want to chose "use free space" as this will take all the rst of the 250gb hard drive i have and leave me nothing for windows. IF i partitioned the hard drive in half, how would i do

I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade

I downloaded the full desktop .iso and burnt it to a pen-drive. Firstly I installed it on my main laptop and it runs flawlessly. With the Aspire One however, though it boots into live mode and works well, after installing and rebooting all I am left with is a flashing prompt in the top left hand corner. I left it for up to an hour thinking it may be slow to boot as its a fresh install but nothing. I booted again into the live distro and checked my hard drive. As far as I can tell everything is there. So Ubuntu installed which made me think the problem was with grub. From the live cd I installed grub using the commands:
>mount | tail -l
>sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-... /dev/sda
I rebooted but now I only have the grub prompt. When I type boot I get a warning saying that the kernel needs to be installed first. So why is 10.10 not booting? What else can I do to fix this problem?

I am still using Lucid with a Luks/dm-crypt setup. I picked up an upgrade today that included grub. It gave me a box that had me choose my location to install the upgrade. I chose /boot. When apt did its upgrade thing, I got the following message: Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu ... /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and its use is discouraged.. Installation finished. No error reported. I looked in /boot/grub and found no menu.lst file.

I have a USB Multiboot created with pendrivelinux.com. I have tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a small laptop, but I get the problem that the installer wants to either:
1) Partition my USB key and install it there
2) Install it on my drive and destroy the Windows Partition
4) Install it on my key and destroy everything on it.
3) Manually setup the partitions
When manually setting up partitions, I cannot resize the windows partition. GParted can't resize that partition (there is a triangular ! yellow warning sign, similar to this thread's icon, but yellow). GParted on the USB (GParted Environment) has the same problem as GParted in Ubuntu. It seems to be locked, even though I am in root and I have every hard drive partition unmounted.
