Debian Installation :: Squeeze 6.01 Thinkpad T520 Network?

Aug 10, 2011

I have a new Thinkpad T520 from work and am trying to put Debian 6 on it. I previously had a Thinkpad T42 and was able to install Debian 6. I recall having to find the driver and install it separately, so I downloaded all of the non-free drivers, but the network detection step doesn't seem to let me select my own driver.

I've been thru this at least 4 times, both the standard 6.01 and the AMD64 bit version, both behave the same. This has the (unfortunately) the Thinkpad b/g/n wireless card, but the wired ethernet is the Intel 82579LM gigabit. Seems there would be a driver with Debian 6 that would support that one.I can't stand running Windows 7.

Ubuntu Installation :: USB Boot Works With Thinkpad T60 But Not With T520?

I decided to test Ubuntu 11.04 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T520 as it has no OS currently. I created USB boot media with unetbootin on a 4 Gb stick, and it worked with my old T60 but not with this T520 (it just jumps back to boot device selection few seconds after selecting USB as there was nothing written on the stick).

Specs of the machines are

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze On Thinkpad R400 Laptop Getting Very Hot?

Apr 6, 2011

I have Lenovo Thinkpad R400 laptop. It has Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with ATI Radeon 3400 series graphics card and Intel Mobility chipset series 4 Integrated graphics controller. I have Squeeze ( stable) installed on it with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 .

My laptop gets very hot within 10 minutes whether I do any task or not. Also battery life is almost 40% as compared to Windows. I am more worried about temperature as it remains completely cool in windows. Mostly CPU load remains around 10% and CPU spends 99.99% time at 800MHz clock. I believe heat generated is by graphics card chipset.

Following are some information about my machine

I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I am, however, having trouble finding a suitable free / non-free driver to work with the abovementioned card. It would seem that this card is too "new" at the moment (February 2010).

Debian Configuration :: Thinkpad X120e - Wireless Network Down

May 14, 2011

My wireless network is down. I got thinkpad x120e, chipset: Realtek RTL8188CE, driver: rtl819ce.

Here is what I did so far:
upgraded to 2.6.38-bpo.2-686
installed firmware-linux-nonfree
Added the firmware file from the repo since it's not yet packaged in firmware-realtek and reloaded the module.
'iwlist sc' shows: 'wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down'
'dmesg |tail -20' shows:
rtl8192ce:rtl92c_download_fw():<0-0> Failed to request firmware!
firmware 0000:04:00.0: firmware_loading_store: vmap() failed

I also tried the following commands:
ifdown wlan0 ; ifup wlan0
ifconfig wlan0 up

Step by step, in case someone is interested:
add to sources.list: deb [URl] squeeze-backports main

Debian :: Slower Network In Squeeze C/w Ubuntu?

Mar 18, 2011

I switched to Crunchbang Statler (based on Squeeze) from ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop about a month ago, and I'm loving it. I have one small issue though:My desktop machine (statler) acts as a file server using samba shares for my HTPC (ubuntu 10.04), with movies and music streaming over a hardwired powerline network. Before I switched to statler, the network performed flawlessly - I could stream all of my 1080p movies (mkv, ripped using handbrake's "high profile") and never saw any issues.Since I switched to Statler for my file server, I've been having constant buffering pauses on the HTPC when playing 1080p content. 720p plays ok, but I've also noticed it takes much longer for the movies (and music) to start playing.Networking is an area I'm pretty clueless about, but I had a working setup before. The samba shares are essentially the same, and nothing else has changed in my network. Files play ok on the desktop machine

General :: Debian Squeeze No Network Manager

Jul 31, 2011

Okay, so today I decided I was bored with my current Fedora 15 installation and tried a little distro hopping. Eventually I ended up at Debian Squeeze. I downloaded the cd version as a net install won't work because of driver issues. I used the graphical interface to install it.When it finished installing I booted it up, made sure everything was working. Now in all my past I think 6 linux installations, all I had to do to get the internet working was move a file someone gave me a while to my /lib/firmware. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but no matter what, where ever I go, I can't find an actual manager to connect to the internet. This might be a stupid question to a lot of people, but I'm stumped. There is nothing in the menu's.

Now I've been working with GNU/Linux for almost a year now and have come across many problems, but never like this. I've Googled up and down, and searched the forums here and still nothing. I've looked in the menu's and the only network related thing is network-proxy. Just for kicks I also tried

Debian Configuration :: No Longer Connect To The Wireless Network After Squeeze Upgrade

I upgraded from lenny to squeeze on a notebook and I can no longer connect to the wireless network. The computer is an LG notebook and the network card is ralink rt2860. I am using Gnome and NetworkManager. The wireless key is WEP hex. It was working fine with lenny till before the upgrade. After the upgrade, the network card stopped working. So, I checked

$ lspci|grep Network
08:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2860

Then I reinstalled the driver with apt-get install firmware-ralink wireless-tools Then the network manager tray started working again and saw the network, but cannot connect. It was trying to connect but timed out and kept asking for the password. It is the correct password. I tried deleting the old connection and recreated a new one in the nm. But still does not work.

Debian Installation :: Debian Squeeze On The Dell Mini 9?

May 22, 2010

This topic began in the Debian Development forum here I have successfully completed both the install and the after installation configuration. I have a fully functional system on this little baby, inspite of the fact that wireless (Broadcom bcm4312), ethernet (Realtek) and sound were initially broken.

There is a lot of assistance out there on the web. In the previous thread, I was having trouble installing any debian on a usb stick. The issues that needed resolving were 1. Bad stick

2. Incompatible kernels between boot.img and .iso

3. The method of copying .iso to the stick that finally worked was wget My first successful usb install was Lenny. Even though I upgraded the stock system with lenny-backports, I could not get wireless, ethernet or sound working the only connection I could get to the internet was through my 3g stick and that was not performing up to it's capability. I manually configured wvdial to get that working.

I attempted an upgrade to squeeze several times and each time the upgrade trashed the system. I finally found squeeze boot.img and .iso files from an eee pc blog. This allowed a fresh install of Squeeze and I was making progress. The little atom processor would not handle the b43-fwcutter driver, so I compiled one from the Broadcom site written especially for the atom processor. Now I had cable broadband supplied wireless. I got my ethernet working with help from the Gnome site technical specs on Network Manager. Simply changing ifupdown=false to ifupdown=true in the network manager config file.

Sound was activated by help from a blog entitled "Debian on the Dell Mini 9" My head is spinning now or I would be more specific and instructive on all I did to get this baby up and running. If anyone asks, I may do a how-to.

PS: Posted from that Dell Mini 9 running Debian Squeeze.

EDITED: Correction of typing errors.

Debian Installation ::Can Only Get To Command Prompt With Debian Squeeze

Feb 10, 2011

Debian Lenny worked just great. That was my first experience of Debian. The installer recognised all my hardware and the system was soon up and running brilliantly with a few tweaks. Confident of Debian's reliability, I decided to move to Debian 6 and did a fresh install, with downloads of the new operating system rather than a distribution upgrade. The installation routines have not worked for the same computer system. I don't know if its hardware not being recognised by Debian 6 that were recognised without a problem by Debian 5??

At first, the boot-up flipped at "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated," there was a kernal panic then Debian disappeared. No signal was sent to the monitor and I had to switch off the computer manually
I was able to look into the Debian 6 OS from Arch Linux, installed on different partitions of the same hard-drive. I am able to overwrite the Debian files as root from Arch.
My i686 machine has PATA IDE drives.

Why are 2) dbus and the 3) avahi-demon failing? I need to get them started first so that I can get an internet connection and try and correct the problem with X and the wrong Nvidia driver. Is there some configuration I can do either from Arch, where I am now, or the bash prompt on Debian? Thanks in advance.
