View 12 RepliesI work with a Debian Squeeze on my laptop and I have a 160GB external hard disk. My hard disk was formatted FAT32, but I decided to format it using ext2. I formatted it using fdisk from command line and everything went well. Unfortunately, when I mount my hard drive(which is auto-mounted from Debian) it has got root both as owner and group. Then I can't write to it because I have no permission to do that. Is there a setting to create an ext2 partition which has as owner the logged system user in order to have right permission every time.

Anyone know why my fresh installation of centOS server is so slow? Seems like it takes over a minute to execute a command, im not doing anything complicated either. Secondly, how come at times when I type reboot the machine starts to beep, one long loud annoying beep.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that
I'm from a Solaris (printer.conf) background and having trouble setting up a printer on the network. My CentOS box does not have a GUI interface available. I have been playing with lpadmin trying to add a printer - which it did, but everything is disabled, and the "enable" command is not found on my machine.
How do I make a simple printer on my network talk to my centOS box?

Running a server using CentOS 5.5 (yum updated, x86_64), found that when using /usr/sbin/useradd to create system user, the quota for the user will default set to 5M soft and 10M hard (on /var/spool/mail partition). As remember the default setting for user quota should be both zero when create a new user.
man useradd and quota related command and no help, had any idea how to change/set the default quota when create user.
I've got Samba server running on CentOS box. Everything works fine when I use "path" parameter, but I think Samba should create /home dirs for clients automatically. It should look like this:
comment = Home Directory of '%u'
valid users = @"Domain Group"
browseable = no
writable = yes

When I explicitly declare "path" param, it works ok. But I need PERSONAL home dir for every user separately, not one dir for everyone.
I have recently installed MySQL Server on my CentOS box.
CentOS 5 MySQL 5.0.45 (installed using 'yum install mysql-server') I can start the daemon without error by issueing the following command: service mysqld start

At first I thought of using the "dd" command to create the ISO out of a directory, but it fails code...

I am currently interning at a place and my job is to essentially learn UNIX. My supervisor gives me problems here and there to help guide me with my learning but for the most part I'm doing this all by self-teaching myself. Needless to say I have run into a few obstacles...for instance-Create a *one* line command that, using tar, will collect the full /usr/local directory (you need to run this as root again) and copy the whole /usr/local structure under /optFor example /usr/local/bin/hello will become /opt/local/bin/hello, etc. I want this as follows:1. /usr/local is collected by tar, but the output of this tar command is its stdout.. what you get from the previous stdout, you compress with gzip and send it to stdout again 3. get this output and decompress with gzip.. get this output and pipe to tar in a way that will extract the tree under /opt.If anyone knows how I could go about doing this, please let me know, or at the very least point me in the right direction. What I've got so far (which could be completely wrong) is:tar cvf - usr/local/ | gzip -c - | gunzip -c - | tar xvf -in theory I feel like this should work (except for extracting the tree under /opt...i'm kinda stuck there)
