I'm using several 3rd party repos for Centos - RPMforge, ATrpms, EPEL, REMI. Is there some way I can set the priorities for these repos in a bash script, using a YUM command? I cannot find anything in the YUM man page, or the yum-utils package.
Smart PM has a command to set channel priorities from the command line. Wondered if I can do the same for YUM repos?
I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that

I'm not trying to launch the gui, I want it to set from CLI and then I want to check the GUI to confirm it did set properly... possible? I've tried gconftool which shows me what windowmanager I'm running (note both "Normal" and "Extra" say I'm running "compiz" as my windowmanager.
I've tried gconftool-2 to set it but since both are already "compiz" I don't know how to differentiate between "Normal" and "Extra". I have grep'd all of my .gconf directory and there doesn't seem to be any reference to "Normal" or "Extra" in any of my %gconf.xml files. How can I change the Visual Effect setting from CLI?

This is a laptop, to which I connect an external hdmi display when I get to work. dipser -e extends the desktop for me, but the laptop remains the primary desktop (holding the panels etc). nvidia-settings can set primary monitor for me, but I want to use the cli.
I've been having issues setting up the wireless interface on my Ubuntu server (command-line only, no GUI) and I can't seem to get it working. It seems as though the card is recognized, the drivers are installed and the interface is up, but it fails to connect. I have no idea where I'm going wrong. I have WPA and a MAC filtering setup on my wireless router. An exception has been made for this PC's MAC address and I've manually entered the connection details into /etc/network/interfaces.

I am trying to install the RPMForge Repository. I am following the instructions at : [URL]. After installing yum-priorities and *before* adding the RPMForge repository -
I went into /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo
and added priority=1 to [extras] [updates] and [addons].
Then, when I run 'yum check-update' it says there are packages being excluded. I would have thought that before I had installed the 3rd party repo - that nothing should be excluded? Especially with everything set to the same priority. On a side note - this is a Xen VPS that we are renting... and the providors have commented out the [base] section (#[base])... I'm assuming this is is OK and is for my own protection.

I have a Asus EEE PC 1005P which I installed a Command-line system on using the Alternate Installer CD of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Altough I think this is a general linux and grub2 question. I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600. But it isn't reported when I use vbeinfo inside grub:

Anyone know why my fresh installation of centOS server is so slow? Seems like it takes over a minute to execute a command, im not doing anything complicated either. Secondly, how come at times when I type reboot the machine starts to beep, one long loud annoying beep.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

In Centos, my memory stick is /dev/sdc1, how do I, using command line: format it as /ext3, encrypt it using cryptsetup, and set a password?
It's a new install on a laptop, it looks like it installs fine, however after a boot I get login & password prompt and command line. I did choose GNOME desktop during the install.I know I will have problems to get 1080p resolution with my Intel integrated card Ironlake but at least I expect to have GNOME with min resolution 800x600.

I have been playing with lpadmin trying to add a printer - which it did, but everything is disabled, and the "enable" command is not found on my machine.
How do I make a simple printer on my network talk to my centOS box?

I've run into one problem that is affecting two different desktop systems running CentOS 5.3.oth of these systems have the latest updates. These machines have standard network-attached printers. One is an HP LaserJet 3250 and the other is a model that is pretty close to that one.Previously these users were able to print from graphical applications such as Firefox, but now when the print dialog is opened on ANY graphical application, it causes a hard freeze on that particular app.Printing from the commandline via `lpr` gives no issues and test pages from the Printer Admin interface also succeed.This problem has me stumped, so I'm looking for any insight as to what could have changed. I do not know what changed between the time when the printers worked graphically and when they stopped, but the users assure that they have changed no settings. The only thing I can suspect is a rogue update since this is affecting separate users on separate machines with separate printers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble trying to get the kernel to accept some command line arguments for parport_pc during bootup. I have a custom base board with a PC-104 CPU board connected to it through the ISA bus. On the base board I have 3 parallel ports mapped to addresses, 0x150, 0x158, and 0x160. Only the first one needs interrupts, the second two do not. So, on bootup I load the parport_pc module like this modprobe parport_pc io=0x150,0x158,0x160 irq=3,none,none I have been running an older RedHat kernel, 2.6.11 for the past few years and this has been working flawlessly. I had the above modprobe call in /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
Now I am trying to set the system up to use CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5. What happens is, the module inserts OK, but the system never recognizes the ports. (i.e, they do not show up in /proc/ioports)
But, if I log into the system, then rmmod parport_pc, then re-modprobe it as above, it works just fine and now my ports are visible. This is an embedded system, expected to just come up and run, so kicking it into action by hand is not an option.
I have tried putting a parport_pc.modules file in /etc/sysconfig/modules so that it will be seen by rc.sysinit, (some site I found while googling said modprobes need to be done earlier than in rc.local),and again, the module gets inserted but the ports are not seen. I have also tried putting rediculously long pauses between each step of the modprobing of the parport stuff;

Notice that "chmod" and "touch" are part of the package coreutils which gets installed only after these commands are used. I'm seeing a similar problem with selinux being referenced before the libselinux package is installed. I can boot the resulting image but after the kernel boots it panics because it cannot find /dev/root which might or might not have something to do with the errors above.
I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.
