The problem I have is that the file is always corrupt so I cannot mount it because I only have around 100k of it but all I need is to extract the headers of what the iso contains. how I can achieve this I have searched the internet with no look at all.

Feb 12, 2011since I am on a Dell inspiron 1545 laptop, being able to display my battery charge is critical. After some extensive googling, I found I need a command 'acpi', which does not exist on my computer. I cannot seem to find it in the packages database; the closest thing being 'acpi-support' apt-get install also can't find it.
I tried cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state, but that only shows me if the battery is discharging or charging and doesn't give me an actual percentage.

Apr 5, 2011I cannot install Kubuntu 8.04LTS. When I run the Live CD and click to install it gets me the box that should show me my hard drives and possible partitions but the box is empty. I get the same when booting to the Live CD and clicking on install. I have had this CD since Kubuntu 8.04 was released. So not knowing what might be wrong I figure I will ask here for what to type in a command line to install it. I know it is an old version but it is the last one with KDE 3.5.

Apr 14, 2010i'm trying to setup my server box.. it's being setup as a web server, file server, and setup for me to be able to access it remotely (aka i do pc repair for windows users and it'd be nice to just know where ALL of my software tools are and get to them from there)anyways.. these things are almost all setup right now.. but the one thing i'm having issues with.. is the fact that this box does have 2 hard drives in it and i want to use both of them.. now i'm running straight command line and i can't find the info i need to reformat the second HDD (which is currently NTFS formated) and use it in this system... i'm running 9.04 as a server.. NO GUI INSTALLED! i need this with straight command line...What do i need to look for to figure this out? i'm having trouble figuring this out and it's really getting annoying..

I did choose GNOME desktop during the install.I know I will have problems to get 1080p resolution with my Intel integrated card Ironlake but at least I expect to have GNOME with min resolution 800x600.

I have been playing with lpadmin trying to add a printer - which it did, but everything is disabled, and the "enable" command is not found on my machine.
How do I make a simple printer on my network talk to my centOS box?

Oct 6, 2009I work at The University of Alabama as a sysadmin on various HPC resources and also provide support for faculty using Unix systems. I've run into one problem that is affecting two different desktop systems running CentOS 5.3.oth of these systems have the latest updates. These machines have standard network-attached printers. One is an HP LaserJet 3250 and the other is a model that is pretty close to that one.Previously these users were able to print from graphical applications such as Firefox, but now when the print dialog is opened on ANY graphical application, it causes a hard freeze on that particular app.Printing from the commandline via `lpr` gives no issues and test pages from the Printer Admin interface also succeed.This problem has me stumped, so I'm looking for any insight as to what could have changed. I do not know what changed between the time when the printers worked graphically and when they stopped, but the users assure that they have changed no settings. The only thing I can suspect is a rogue update since this is affecting separate users on separate machines with separate printers.

May 9, 2011I am having trouble trying to get the kernel to accept some command line arguments for parport_pc during bootup. I have a custom base board with a PC-104 CPU board connected to it through the ISA bus. On the base board I have 3 parallel ports mapped to addresses, 0x150, 0x158, and 0x160. Only the first one needs interrupts, the second two do not. So, on bootup I load the parport_pc module like this modprobe parport_pc io=0x150,0x158,0x160 irq=3,none,none I have been running an older RedHat kernel, 2.6.11 for the past few years and this has been working flawlessly. I had the above modprobe call in /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
Now I am trying to set the system up to use CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5. What happens is, the module inserts OK, but the system never recognizes the ports. (i.e, they do not show up in /proc/ioports)
But, if I log into the system, then rmmod parport_pc, then re-modprobe it as above, it works just fine and now my ports are visible. This is an embedded system, expected to just come up and run, so kicking it into action by hand is not an option.
I have tried putting a parport_pc.modules file in /etc/sysconfig/modules so that it will be seen by rc.sysinit, (some site I found while googling said modprobes need to be done earlier than in rc.local),and again, the module gets inserted but the ports are not seen. I have also tried putting rediculously long pauses between each step of the modprobing of the parport stuff;

Notice that "chmod" and "touch" are part of the package coreutils which gets installed only after these commands are used. I'm seeing a similar problem with selinux being referenced before the libselinux package is installed. I can boot the resulting image but after the kernel boots it panics because it cannot find /dev/root which might or might not have something to do with the errors above.

Mar 13, 2010I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.

May 28, 2009I am trying to attach my server to 2 diferent networks, with fixed ip addresses,
eth0 = 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 with gateway 192.168.0.1. This is currently working, and I can ssh o the machine on this address
eth1 = 192.168.150.5 255.255.255.0 with gateway 192.168.150.1
When I try and start eth1 with ifconfig eth1 up, I get the error message "eth1: unknown interface: no such device"
I have configured eth1 using system-config-network-tui and /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth1 looks correct
GATEWAY=192.168.150.1
TYPE=Ethernet
DEVICE=eth1
BOOTPROTO=none
