CentOS 5 :: Samba, Smbusers File, Anonymous NFS Access?

I have a test server (2.6.18-194.el5) that allows automated tools from Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 to access the filesystem (anonymous NFS access) via Samba (3.5.4-0.70.el5_6.1). Documentation on the smbusers file on samba.org seems a little thin.
* why is it necessary map unix users to samba users?
* what purpose does this mapping serve?
* does the umask of the unix user limit the samba user it is mapped to when creating files/directories? what about anonomous access?
* why are files created via anonymous access owned by 'nobody'?
* how can I control what user and permissions files/directories are created with?

vsftpd is working fine in my network with anonymous user but i need to access that from out-side all the setting is done on the router. I am getting page to access ftp form out-side but only for ftp users not anonymous user how i will give permeation to access ftp to anonymous user ?

I'm planning to use a virtual CentOS box for web development (to use the same software as on the real server). I configured Samba to have root guest access to /var/www/ but it doesn't let me in /var. Chmod 777 doesn't help. Nethertheless, I have full access to /sbin and /etc.

I'm trying to set up a test system for Windows 7. I've been having trouble getting it to map drives on the domain where I work, so I wanted to set up a test system with a similar setup so I can play around with settings without mucking up our network. Only problem is I can't get it configured to even work with XP, which does work on our domain.
When I type \server in the Run box I get the explorer window showing all of the test shares I've set up. But when I try to access them, it says the network path could not be found. Here is my smb.conf file:

I'm trying to get vsftpd running with both anonymous and local user access to the same folder. The directory I'm using is /tftp with the following permissions:
dr-srwxrwx 7 root root 12288 2009-08-14 15:54 tftp
My vsftpd.conf is this:
anonymous_enable=YES
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES

I set the default "ftp" user's home directory to /tftp (was /var/ftp).

cannot restrict share access to a single user. I've played with the security and valid users options in the smb.conf and I can get it to mount if I remove the valid users option, but this does not provide the access restriction I need. I also left it open and tried making the folder permissions rwx for backupadmin only and that didn't work. I'm using a credentials file which I include below, but I've tried manually entering them in the command too.

samba quit working after win7 I'm new-ish to linux(not using ubuntu tho, but servers)i don't know what PID is.. i just installed a new ubuntu server of an old computer, for file sharing in workgroup with samba, and a little apache server running webmin is also running, giving me an error when restarting samba all worked very well untill i used win7 to access the \server this blog post have a fix for vista7? connecting to samba, but wont fix my problem after i connected to the share with win7 nothing seems to work

I installed Samba on CentOS, create a principal share called "public" . I want to populate this share with subfolders, and to grant access rights to specific folders for specific users. The content of "public" will be visible for all Samba users, but they will have read/write access only to the specified subfolders based on my security policy. This is on Centos 5.3 by the way..... I had a DVD and, well, just wanted to test some things.. I'm aware that this is not the latest release.
And, by the way (I just read an earlier post) I've added the username and password with which I'm trying to login (..hello?).
I'm at work and I don't have a copy of my Vsftpd configuration file (don't wanna edit this whole thing - actually there is a copy, below). I've used Slackware for years and never had any issues with Vsftpd - it just works. I am trying Centos because I need help with upgrading my mail server (qmail) and there's not much help for Slackware users. Also, I used to run RHEL3 and had vsftpd working fine (had to copy some file to /etc/pam.d) but it worked famously. I compiled all my web server stuff (just don't like these default things where I have no idea how things are integrated) and I'm hung up on - of all things - vsftpd.
Anyway....When I try to log into my ftp server I get "KERBEROS_V4 rejected as an authentication type" and only the anonymous account works. Any other logins produce an error (incorrect login - see ya' later). I have SE Linux and the firewall OFF. I don't recall the directive, precisely, but my vsftpd.conf file is set allow local users to connect. I installed with yum and it added some lines at the bottom (one was about a user list and the other was about PAM). I've got a chroot list and a user list although it's not clear to me precisely where the user list should be placed. I actually uninstalled the RPM and compiled, too. I've done everything but call an exorcist. And I've found tons of posts regarding this on the net and none of the fixes worked. Man - on slackware you type "make" and "make install" (I build it with tcp_wrappers) and you're off to the races.
Actually - I did upload the vsftpd.conf file to work (where I'm at, now). Minus lines that were commented out it looks like this:
Could it, possibly, be something about how I am adding the user, the shell type, etc? I know that in Redhat I used to type "/usr/sbin/useradd -d /home/someuser joe". I've done it that way and I've also done it like so: "useradd -d /home/schmoe -s /bin/bash schmoe".

I can't be the first one with this problem. What am I missing?
I have setup Samba servers in the past, just none under SELinux. The last one I configured was a couple years ago, so I wouldn't doubt I'm a bit rusty.

I just opened an (unmanaged) VPS account and and have been encountering nothing but problems with trying to get Apache up and running (its something I've done many times before).Basically the inital error was with LDAP not having enough space, so I disabled the related extensions and Apache still would not run. Looking at the log, it contains: (28)No space left on device: Unable to create scoreboard (anonymous shared memory failure)

I am attempting to configure vsftpd to allow anonymous users to PUT files into a shared incoming directory. This would be like a dropbox for my customers. Ideally, the incoming directory's contents would not be viewable by the users.
I believe that refused connection is due to the PAM configuration for vsftpd.

i have 3 shares on my samba. i have users - user, manager and boss projects is RW to everyone reference is R to everyone RW to manager and boss Proposals is RW only to boss, no access to others However when boss logs in and creates a directory in projects share, the directory can only be renamed bu users and manager, and directory contents are read only for users and managers, even deletion / rename is denied. How can i make sure that when ever boss creates a directory in projects, it retains base folder permissions and is writable to user this is my samba file... i am using red hat 6.1 with samba 3.5.6 (i think)

I've recently installed Proftpd to host for someone for a couple of hours.
With the default config it works however when taken the comments out and edited for anonymous, proftpd fails to start
This is the default config file which works if you have a user and password for my machine, but anonymous wont work (when the comments were removed).

wants some sort of logging capability on the system. to have a log of every change to every file, although that might be a bit unwieldy. perhaps a simpler compromise would be some way of monitoring a few specific folders, and tracking all changes to them, including the user that did so. Particularly important is that it should be possible to work with access through samba, as we want to track what users on the network are creating or changing files. Is there functionality like this already built into debian or samba? is there a useful additional app to gather this information? or am I going to need to be grep'ing log files to present something useable?

I have been having off and on issues with my samba file shares. I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. The file names of files created from the windows workstation are ok, but the file names of files created from the Linux server appear with different names than them are supposed to have. I've been running a Samba server under RedHat 8 for five years without a hiccup. I want to cut over to a F10 box but cannot get shares accessible. smbclient attempts fail over NT password error. SELinux is disabled. Server is visible on the network. Users require no password access to shared data.

I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine.When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
