I have been having off and on issues with my samba file shares. I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed samba server one month ago and it was working fine till yesterday but today morning when any network client is trying to access samba shared files by giving smb://<serveripaddress> it is asking for password...that is ok but when he is giving the password it is again opening the same password window to enter password again.The clients are giving correct password that is confirm. At the server side i have run smbclient -L localhost -U% and that is giving proper response so that also means that samba server is working fine so i dont know what could be the problem and what its solution.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIve managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

Now when I attempt to connect to the shared folder I am unable to see the folders.When I display the network I can see MSHOME but thereafter end up with the following :"Unable to mount locationFailed to retrieve share list from server"Strangely enough I am able to connect to another Lucid system easily enough from my laptop.In each instance both my Lucid systems and the XP one are connected via wireless and as far as I can see the setup on the XP system is networked OK.

I just installed ubuntu on a pc, with 2 other pc's in my network - one runs Windows XP and the other Windows 7.
When I go to Network -> Windows Network -> WORKGROUP I can see both Windows computers. But when I try to open either one of them, it asks me for a username and password. Now, neither of the Windows machines have passwords (they just login automatically).
(I haven't used Ubuntu since the earlier versions and remember having to go through samba and set up config files, etc.).

I am trying to access shared folders in Virtual Box with Host OS being Windows7 and Guest OS is Fedora. Did anyone face a similar problem? I have been going through many solutions but none of them worked out. I am able to keep the required folders in Shared Folders making them Auto-Mount and Permanent. I tried to install Guest Additions from Devices, but I am not sure how to install the Guest-Additions software in Fedora. how to proceed so that I can access files in my shared folder.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI cannot access my Ubuntu samba server using windows XP or 7. I keep getting prompted for a username/password. I have created both a unix username with password and a samba username with the same password i used for the unix user. When windows prompts me for the username/password i give it the same one i created on the samba server, but it still will not take it. I know samba is running because i can view the shares but cannot access them without getting prompted for username/password. I just have the one user for now while i am testing, but there will be more.
I am using Ubuntu Desktop 10.04.
So I setup the newest Ubuntu on my old desktop on a 30g HD and have 2 200G HDs with a ntfs file system on those two. I got SSH and FTP configured, then went on to setup Samba.I have it (seemingly) set up well. /dev/sb1 gets mounted on /data1 /dev/sc1 gets mounted on /data2.I want anyone connected to my router to be able to see this machine and be able to read and write to both shares.
I configured WINS on my laptop to point to the linux box. and i've seen the pc in question (TECH-PC) in "My Network Places" on both of our laptops.Long story short, I try to connect to my network share and it says i don't have permission and i need to contact my network admin. This computer is the only one with Linux installed, the rest are windows-OS.Let me know if you need more info, pretty stumped here, have searched, read, scrapped my install and started from scratch, maybe i need to sleep on it

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a computer to allow a specific samba user to access and write to a folder on the web-server without any luck. I've tried creating symbolic links in the users home to the folder (/var/www/html/something) on the web server and from the server to a directory in the users home but neither seems to work. I haven't seen any errors from SELINUX either but I'm kind of stuck. Also tried adding a directory section and alias line to the httpd.conf but after doing that apache wouldn't start so I'm not really sure how this would be done properly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Linux Box running Fedora 13, it has Samba installed, and I have configured it, I also have a Windoze 7 PC, I want to be able to access the Windoze PC's files from my Linux Box, and vice versa, but when I try to open the Windoze PC in the network on my Linux Box, it asks for my Username and Password, I enter them, the box goes away then pops back up asking for them again... and on the Windoze PC, I find my Linux on the network, open it, it asks for my username and password, I enter them, and it lets me in, but then when I try opening my shared folder, it gives me: "You do not have permission to access \LINUX Shared Folder. Contact your network administrator to request access".

I have configure few folders access by 3 users, In common folder only users that create that document can do changes. The rest of the users can only read the file but can not do changes. Ownership of the folder is admin, group is sambashare which already have the access create and delete files. All the 3 users already in sambashare main group, and they only can edit the file that they copy or create to the common folder .........

I'm sure both username and password are exactly right. But I can not access the folder. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

If I try access secondary drive with admin user, everything is fine. If with another account try to access via samba to shared folder on partition with Ubuntu, everything is fine again. Every folder has set privileges to read&write to everyone, so shouldn't be problem here.

Now i would like to be able to quickly access folders on XP partition, maybe with shortcuts on desktop?
However if i create those shortcuts and restart computer the shortcuts are no longer valid.
Any way around this, or is there a better way to reach XP partition folders without going to root of drive every time?
When i first installed ubuntu on my laptop i could access the shared folders i had put on the network with windows through ubuntu, read and write files, copy and paste them etc. I tried recently going to Places>Network and i get this error: failed to retrieve share list from server
It never used to do this, in fact when i went to places the network was not called "network", it was my own title. i can connect to the server with the ip address, but that only lets me take files from the windows network, and not the other way around. I really have two issues
1. cannot place files on the network from my ubuntu laptop
2. cannot connect to shared folder network from places like i could before
