I have installed CentOS 5.3, and updated with yum update. I have kernel 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5xen.
I can't get my wirelss network to work, I have AR928X wireles network adapter.
Do I need to install a newer kernel and install ath9k or can I just downlad a driver without updating the kernel?
I'm new to CetOS and Linux so I hope someone kan give me a step by step guide to what I can do!
I'm trying to find a driver for my wireless card (Atheros AR928X) and I think it's ath9k what I need. As far as I know there isn't a linux driver for it, so I installed ndiswrapper to use a windows driver instead. The problem is that when I type modprobe ndiswrapper I get "bash: modprobe: command not found" (even as root). I know I'm missing something about modprobe, but I can't find any help on google. Anyway, I installed ndisgtk next, because I thought it would be easier, but when I go to System> Administration> Windows Wireless Drivers I get a message "Unknown error".Do you have any ideas on how I'll make ndiswrapper work?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed OpenSuSE 11.3 x86_64, and as I'm new to OpenSuSE I can't get my wireless to work. I believe it should work because it worked out of the box in Ubuntu (9.10 and 10.04)
At first I didn't see any network icon in the notification area, but after some googling figured out to enable NetworkManager instead of ifup. Now there is an icon, and clicking it I can see wireless networks, but when I try to connect it tries for a while, then seems to give up.

I just downloaded Ubuntu Studio on my laptop and I can't get the wireless to work. I think it's because I need a driver; the Atheros AR928x. Whatever the driver is, it works with the pretty unpopular Musix distribution, because wireless worked instantly when I got that. I switched because it was old and slow.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was doing some testing on my CR-48 notebook, which seemed to be very slow wirelessly when running Ubuntu 11.04. I cracked it open and decided to swap out the wireless cards with an Intel Wifi Link 1000 card I had in my other laptop, which is a Dell Latitude. I then began to do some speed testing, using speedtest.net. I tested each laptop 5 times for each card, so I did 20 tests total.

The results I think speak for themselves. While the Atheros card no doubt *works*, it doesn't work as efficiently as the Intel card I tried. I also noticed if I shut off my wireless security, my speeds drastically improved on the Atheros card. On my router (WRT54G) I used both mixed mode, G-only mode, WPA, WPA2 and a mixture of TKIP, AES, and TKIP+AES encryption. My results were the same across the board unless I took off security.

I have installed CentOS. I have two ethernet card (one onboard and one PCI). I am able to set ip for realtek ethernet card and my atheros(on board) is not shown in network ifconfig shows only one ethernet card (PCI) hen i gave the command lspci i got the following output

In system-config-network, this device shows up properly in Hardware and in Devices. Hardware device shows the right mac address. In General, I set Activate device when computer starts, Automatically obtain IP address setting with dhcp, and Automatically obtain DNS information from provider. I've left the DNS and Hosts page blank.When I try to Activate the device, I get

I have tried nfs restart, to no avail. (When I do this restart, I get the usual OK on seven of the messages but Shutting Down NFS services " shows FAILED.) I know the wireless router is working because I am connecting to it from another machine.
I have a AR928X wireless card and everything I have tried has failed. The default driver ath9k scans and connects to my router but cant connect to any site or ping anything , same with the madwifi driver

I have Acer Aspire 4740 laptop with Atheros ar928x wireless. My wireless is very slow, unstable. Wireless card still works well and fast in Windows (dual booting). After searching I see that there are many Ubuntu users have the same problem in Ubuntu 11.04 with this card.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an MSI 740GM-P25 with an Atheros AR8131M gigabit ethernet adapter onboard. I have since discovered that it's not the easiest device to get working in CentOS (or any other distro I've tried, frankly). Anybody use this card and have instructions on how to get it working? I've got a lot of experience with Linux, but I've never been quite as good with hardware stuff as I probably should be. I've included a list of things I've already attempted below (limited as the list may be).
1) Tried both CentOS 5.5 x86_64 and Fedora 13 x86_64
2) Tried to download and compile the source code for three different Atheros drivers from their website (the Linux drivers listed here) in Fedora 13. All stated that I was using a kernel version that was unsupported (>2.4.0) when attempting to compile.
EDIT: Also, I contacted MSI directly for assistance.I got the simple yet incredibly unhelpful "we can't help you unless you use Windows" response. So there is no official support (and therefore no driver) provided by the manufacturer.

I've got a home firewall setup running CentOs 5.2. It's got two wired interfaces: inside and out and I'm successfully using iptables to filter and nat traffic in and out as expected. Recently I've added an AirLink101 AWLH4030 wireless nic that is recognized as the AR5212/AR5213 chipset. It appears that I have everything configured properly and I've eradicated every error encountered so far. I just installed CentOS and I am trying to configure the network card on the IBM Thinkpad laptop. According to this doc about wireless setup (http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless), I tried to load the ath5k module but I get "ath5k not found". Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I have a Toshiba MX35 laptop it's a little old but does the job. I'm have a problem getting the wireless to work. I can boot a live CD either Ubuntu 10.10 or Fedora 14 and they will see the wireless card. The card is Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01).
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and that is the OS that is having the problem seeing the wireless. The computer will not handle Ubuntu 10.10 (at least it won't handle the desktop effects under Ubuntu 10.10) but handles them just fine under 9.10 and that's why I have 9.10 installed. I recently switched from Windows XP to a clean install Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 but it seems to be quite a problem to get the wifi up and running. In Windows the nearby network all appeared in network connections but the same section in Ubuntu is empty. So I decided to go with the ndiswrapper guide to solve the problem with an unclaimed driver. After an entire day messing with my computer I'm still not close... Below follows excerpts taken from the Ndiswrapper guide with posted results from my computer. It seems like the network is disabled or unclaimed or both. What to do? I'm stuck after spending an entire day trying to install the wifi. I had no problems in Windows XP but it seems to be quite impossible in Ubuntu.
I am unable to find Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Ethernet Controller driver for CentOS which is installed on my netbook.
I contacted DELL to provide me the driver and they said that they do not support Linux on netbook and I have to arrange it myself.
I told them that I don't need help in installing I just need the driver file to which they said that they don't have driver for Linux.
NIC is getting detected and works fine on the same netbook (Am dual booting Windows7/CentOS) with Windows7

I have a CentOS 5.5 server running currently with a Netgear gigabit ethernet card and for wifi I have a wi-fi card with the chipset: RT2860.Now I have gotten the ethernet card and wi-fi card working but my main question is: How do you bridge the connection between the ethernet card and the wi-fi card to create a wireless network with a hidden ESSID if possible and WPA encryption? (So the server basically acts as a wireless router as well as doing all the other stuff I need to do on it).

But now I have nuked that installation and replaced it with FC10. Network Manager is nice, and I would like to use it. And it kind-of works. I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, as well as the conventional Ubuntu. Everything works beautifully, except no wireless. The netbook picks up the signal, but when I provide the Key it fails to connect, and eventually prompts me for the key again.
I've tried to research this on my own, but haven't found a solution. In particular, the solution reported by narnie for his Acer Aspire One D250-1584, <HERE>, didn't work for me.
I'd really like to get this working. The netbook will be much less useful if it can't make use of our wireless router.
