CentOS 5 Hardware :: Folks With A Tyan-Thunder-K8SR-S2881 Board?
Feb 17, 2009
Everything has been working fine but I recently installed a sata drive and lvm didn't see it. I'm sure its a driver issue. I'm running centos 5 on a Tyan-Thunder-K8SR-S2881 board. currently centos is running on an IDE drive. I tried several drivers for red hat distos 3 & 4 but no success for my sata drives to work.

think I have a quick question about outgoing server, how do I change the port number, I don't see an option for it anywhere. I kept getting this error when I try to send an email.
Code: Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.live.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact the server administrator.

I'm trying to load CentOS 5.5 on a new server with an Intel S5500BC motherboard using RAID 1. This board has a known problem with RHEL 5.x and the driver disk supplied has a fix. Here is the download for the driver [URL] Under the ESRT2_RHEL4-5_SLES9-1--11_v.13.21.2010_README file are directions in Section 3.1.3 on how to install the RHEL5x megasr driver. This works. The last thing replaces the ACHI driver with the megasr driver (paragraph 15) by loading the megasr.13.21.0614.2010-1-rhel50-u4-all.img in a temp file and then type "./replace_achi.sh". This step doesn't work and it is the critical one as it replaces the achi with megasr in the initrd image.

I have created my own custom ubuntu distro using the alternate installation cd and doing a command line install. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 as my base and am also using thunar as my file browser and am trying to create a secure desktop environment and to do that I'd like to restrict thunar to a certain partition. Is it possible to do that?

I've just set up a PC with CentOS 5.3 runing on near identical hardware to an existing 5.2 machine. Motherboard is Asus M2A-VM which I discover by chance generally works very well with CentOS. Ethernet is on board Nvidia. The older machine just did run gigabit speed without any intervention at all, rather to my surprise. The newer machine insists on running at 100 Mbit which is annoying as it is connected to a NAS through a gigabit dumb switch.
The obvious difference between the two is that ethtool on the older machine says that supported ports are TP, and so the port is TP. Whereas the newer machine says that supported ports are TP or MII and insists on running MII. I cannot change this with ethtool -s eth0 port tp. Perhaps not too surprisingly, mii-tool says that the supported speeds range up to 100 Mbit.

I have a Biostar TA785GE which as I understand it, has a Realtek 8111DL on-board.
Booting with the default label from the 64-bit installation DVD crashes before any user input, with indecipherable text on-screen (text mode, not X11). Symptoms were the same with the Fedora 11 32-bit installation DVD and the Fedora 12 Live 32-bit CD. Booting with "linux text" mode shows a kernel panic in ":r8169:rtl8169_init_one+0x369/0x9d4" from "pci_device_probe+0x100/0x180".
Disabling the on-board NIC allowed the boot to proceed, and get as far as detecting the hard drive partitions (where I stopped it since Ubuntu is installed).
Ubuntu 9.04 Workstation(Desktop?) install DVD worked fine, and I've installed it and am using it to enter this. From Ubuntu 9.04 on this hardware:
- "uname -r" shows
Linux snoopy 2.6.28-16-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 20 19:48:32 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
- "lsmod | egrep '816|811'" shows:

I am using Centos 5.4 on an Intel DG451D Main Board. Two SATA drives in RAID1 mode via the main board's built in AHCI controller. It seems to work just fine but I would like to be able to monitor the state of my drives and controller, especially during a re-build and make configuration changes etc if possible, so new drives can be added etc from within the OS. Is there a way to do this within Centos or am I stuck with using just the BIOS configuration system? Apologies if this is a stupid question - I am pretty new to this and have spent several hours trying to find a solution to my question but to no avail.

Has anyone successfully installed Fedora Core 11 on a system with a Tyan Trinity KT-400 S2495 motherboard? I have two systems with this motherboard. I tried to install FC11 from the live CD. Both systems have AGP video cards based on the Nvidia GForce-2, although the cards are of different brands. On one system, FC11 installed, but after the machine is booted and I log-in, it runs slower and slower until it is effectively frozen after about fifteen minutes. Somtimes a "Kernel Failure" window will pop up. A momentary press of the power butting will bring up a shutdown window and shut the machine down after a wait of 60 seconds.) By doing several reboots, I did manage to update the installation. (My complements to the developers on the fact that the package download will pick up where it left off).
However it still freezes. On the other system, when the Live Cd has booted, the keyboard and mouse don't work, so I can't do the installation. I tried a different keyboard and mouse, tried rebooting several times. When I boot the machine from SystemRescueCd (kernel 2.3.29) the keyboard works in the text mode. I used the "wizard" command to try various graphical modes. In the default Xorg graphical interface, the keyboard works but the mouse doesn't. In the "Vesa" graphical interface, neither the keyboard nor the mouse work. I tried the Ubuntu 8.04 live CD and the keyboard and mouse don't work. I tried an FC 8 install Cd, the keyboard works in the installation screens but the mouse doesn't. I replaced the Nvidia AGP card with a Voodoo 3dFx PCI video card. The system won't finish posting. It hangs on the second screen. This system formerly ran Windows 2000 OK and before that it ran Window 98. But perhaps it's now defective?

I can not get any output from the digital optical S/PDIF jack on my on-board audio device. But I am getting an analog signal from the headphone jack. I don't have an RCA S/PDIF cable, so I haven't tested the RCA S/PDIF jack. Below are my system specs and hardware info.
According to my MOBO (DFI Blood-Iron P45) manual, the Audio device is:
Realtek ALC885 HDA CODEC
8-channel audio output
Optical S/PDIF-out and coaxial RCA S/PDIF interfaces
There are 6 phone jacks (including 1 mic), an RCA S/PDIF, and an Optical S/PDIF jack on the MOBO. The output of alsa-info.sh is here:[URL]... Note that I tried several model options (6stack-dig, 6stack-dig-demo, intel-alc889a, auto) for the snd-hda-intel module, but none worked,

is there a reason why OpenSUSE won't come with SUN Java prepakaged? Preinstalled Java seems to be ice something, which doesn't work with most of the Java software. Is there an easy way to replace it with real Java and have all the settings ready made. With this I refer to environment.
My current project is to make IDE for the BV513 PIC-board.

>> ping google.com
I will get proper response with the packets details. When I am trying the same thing in minicom terminal I am not getting anything even the proper error messages. If I use the same ping command in different way
>> ping 209.85.231.10(ip of google.com)
I am getting proper response. I don't know why the DNS name is not resolving in the board. Is there any documentation is available to do the internet connectivity with this board?

I am working on a project to build an embedded board with WIFI connectivity. My present status:
- I have a embedded development board TS7200 .
- It has USB and Ethernet Port.
- I am able to get port Linux on it and run program to communicate between devices and a computer using socket programming and Ethernet.
I need help in deciding how to get WIFI connectivity to the board. I guess it would mostly be using WIFI dongle? Any suggestion for a WIFI dongle? How should I get it working? Where should I look for proper reading material? I am am planning to do some basic program practice using WIFI on my laptop. How can I do that ?

I have a server running ESXi. I want to know if it supports AMD-V for hardware-based virtualization. Is there any way to check it from one of the guest os running (centos 5).
Also, I tried rebooting the box and I can't see an option in the bios to turn on/off Virtualization. Although from Asus site they say it supports is:
[URL]
The motherboard is an ASUS KFN4-DRE and has 2 Dual Opteron 2216 2.4GHz processors.
Also, on a side note, I have another box with HDAMA board and 2 Dual Opteron 275s. Do these support AMD-V as well? No option in bios as well.

Here's the situation: My Dell Latitude D830 video chip failed. Dell has replaced the system board under warranty. The following problems now exist:
1. eth0 has become eth1. The system failed to see the current ethernet as the only ethernet.
2. wlan0 has become wlan1. The same has occurred.
3. The pulse audio applet (I know, not officially supported) will not start up properly at boot complaining about something missing or wrong in the configuration. I suspect the hardware for sound is also not recognized as the previous.
4. Pidgin and Firefox are both having issues with anything SSL and digital certificates. In pidgin, I can no longer log into AIM. With Firefox, I had to accept a bunch of new SSL certificates. (Did that once for any https web site I have accessed for the first time since the system board change)
I would seriously like to understand how the hardware detection situation affects all of this. I was able to tweak some configuration files to get eth0 back to normal operation by manually changing the MAC address. But that isn't working for wlan0/wlan1 as I attempted to make corrections using the GUI and that didn't work out too well.
Where would I find the central point of identifying hardware devices and device names? And I suspect the encryption cert issues are related to the change in hardware as well which makes me wonder a few things. What happens when a non-laptop user changes a network card? Is Fedora married too closely to the hardware? What happens if we were to try to "ghost" a Fedora installation?
