CentOS 5 :: 5.5 Crashes During Install Attempt
Feb 17, 2011
I'm having similar problem to someone else here in the forum (see [URL], but only with the 64 bit version of CentOS 5.5. Almost every time I try to install it, it will crash at some point in the "interactive" startup phase (but it is random). One time, I actually reached the install desktop. I did not attempt an install. I shut the machine down and the system crashed. I haven't been able to get to the install desktop since then.
I have successfully installed CentOS 5.5 32bit, however, on this same machine. In fact, I am writing this from a VM running under CentOS 5.5 32bit on this machine, and do all my work on this machine. I have since upgraded to the latest 2.6.18 kernel with PAE and latest VirtualBox; I have not experienced ANY instability at all with this machine so far. Occasionally, VirtualBox gets an error booting the client, but it has been rare and I've seen this even on older VirtualBox versions on a previous mainboard, so I am not particularly suspicious of that. It is a brand new system, only about a month old. All new parts, except for mostly unused hard drives and drive bays.

Attempting to install CentOS 5.5 on my desktop box crashes spectacularly. (See [URL]The LiveCD does boot and appears to work, but also fills the screen with random, blinking characters early in the boot process.I was hoping I built a fairly ordinary box, so I'm surprised by this crash. It's an ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 790GX HDMI ATX AMD motherboard. Full specs here:[URL]

I get "403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access" after attempting an installation of phpmyadmin.
CentOS 5.4
Permissions for directory set to 755 recursively (chomd -R 755 <directory name>)
Directory is in /var/www/html/
I have other test pages in the /var/www/html/ directory that I can access ... I know this seems like a permission issue and in fact the error log states this is a permission issue, but I cannot figure what is the problem here.

I've recently been trying to put Centos on a PC which I have had Windows 2000 server on up until now. The system has an Intel SCSI RAID Controller which seems to be successfully detected before the graphical stage is reached. The system is fairly old now and consists of a p3 processor and 320mb of ram. However when the installer reaches the point of launching Anaconda in graphical mode it seems to start to load but then the system immediately boots itself down Quoting an Abnormal Setup Termination however gives no more details than that. I have tried changing the graphics card to no effect. I am not sure if anyone knows what could be causing the problem the media also shuld be ok as I have used it successfully on other systems.

Hardware:2x Intel Xeon E5520 @ 2.26 Intel Server Board S5520UR LSI 8888ELP raid controller
Anyone gotten CentOS 5 to install on this hardware? The installer boots and partitions the drive, but either crashes during formatting of the partitions or during package installation with a kernel panic.

I have a LVM snapshot that triggers these kernel errors when any LVM-related commands run:
Jul 6 10:31:38 itmanager kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 6 10:31:38 itmanager kernel: dm-28: rw=0, want=66156996183394672, limit=25165824
dm-28 is the snapshot volume in device mapper. I think this error is generated because most LVM commands will check the first 4K of various drives and volumes for LVM metadata and labels, but attempts to read any of the first eight sectors (ie: 4K) of this particular snapshot logical volume trigger this error. The most interesting thing is that the snapshot is 25165824 sectors long (12G), but attempts to access the first eight sectors result in an attempt to access sector 66156996183394672!I've obtained an info dump from getinfo.sh disk, and added the output from lvs. You can find the results here:URL.. It's not as if the sectors that back the first 4K of the volume are corrupt, either: the read request never hits any hardware because the read request is attempting to read a non-sensical sector, instead of the correct sector. Perhaps the COW metadata for the snapshot is corrupt?
How do I find the cause of this problem? Is this a critical error that I should file a bug report for?I first noticed this some time after turning the machine on Sunday afternoon. As far as I can tell from the logs, the shutdown the previous evening was normal.I use LVM fairly heavily on this machine, and this is the first time I've ever seen this kind of problem..I've worked around the problem by copying the first eight sectors from the Origin volume, and the rest from the Snapshot volume, to a new normal logical volume. However, I'm still concerned about how this error occurred in the first place.

when I perform an apt-get update and then attempt to install the package cifs.utils it says that it cannot find the package but in Ubuntu 10.04 it does find it in 10.10. Does this package have another name or is it that the standard repositories to not have it in there list?

I installed from a live CD when it came to selecting the partition I re-sized the partition that Ubuntu was on because it was 68 gigs I shaved off 15 gigs for SUSE. Then I selected this new 15gig partition to install SUSE on, everything went fine with the installation I was tinkering around on SUSE but of course I needed internet access, so I go to get on Ubuntu where I had my file with my network key. I restarted expecting to see the usual GRUB boot-loader screen only now with an added option for SUSE. Instead I see an entirely new layout for the GRUB boot loader and all that is listed is SUSE, Failsafe SUSE, Windows XP, and Floppy. The Windows is my XP install and it loads fine sadly it is actually what I'm using now because it is the only thing left that I have my network key saved so I can get on this forum.
Looking on SUSE I notice that the 50gig partition formerly known as Ubuntu still exists I figure no problem add the partition back on to the boot-loader and I'm good to go. Added it and when I select to load it nothing happens it starts to then reverts back to the OS list. Does anyone A) Know how to resolve this or have any ideas. B) Think I can at least copy files off that 50 gig partition to an external hard drive.

I am attempting to install debian for the first time on my pc that has no cdrom drive. I downloaded the Jessie CD image and wrote it to a 4GB stick, it didnt work. Then tried the netinstall image but face the same issue.
To write the usb stick I used unetbooting first, then tried win32diskimager and finally tried DD while stick was not mounted
Code: Select alldd if=debian.iso of=/dev/sdb BS=4MB; sync
Issue is still the same: I boot from the usb and after selecting language and keyboard it fails to detect cdrom drive (no drive at all in my pc). Same behavior using normal or expert mode.
Im also unable to manually specify the drive (it looks at /cdrom and I wanted to change it to the usb stick itself or mount usb to /cdrom but I cant find my stick in /dev)

I think the installation caused the corruption of the partition table. I removed the last 3 logical partitions and gparted correctly reported the 2 remaining distros and the swap. The problem hopefully will be solved when I reinstall those distros. I have a 160 gig HD with 3 Linux,1 swap, and a Windows partition. I attempted to install PCLINUXOS unsuccessfully. When I rebooted I had the same grub. I checked gparted and it indicated all 160 gigs as unallocated. fdisk shows the partitions. and indicates one partition as empty where I attempted to install PCLOS.
No problem in accessing any of my distros, but currently I can't make any changes to my HD. I've tried parted magic and there was no solution there. I have been unable to download the Ubuntu Rescue remix. Is there a way to restore? I haven't used fdisk or cfdisk for that purpose. I am beginning to think I would need to delete all of the partitions in the extended.

I have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

If you attempt to install VLC by simply adding the VideoLAN repository to YAST, the version that's installed won't have audio.Follow the Zypper instructions on the VideoLAN website (bottom of the page)VideoLAN - VLC media player for openSUSE Be sure to specify 11.3 as described, and VLC will install fine.

Background information: I need to install WinXP on my computer to use Spectraview II software for monitor profiling. Tried it under Wine, didn't work...thought about virtualization, but Graeme Gill (creator of Argyll) said that probably wouldn't work:
Quote: The problem is that emulators often don't implement hardware details properly or at all. There's no standard way on Linux to read/write the DDC, so there is no surprise that wine doesn't emulate MSWin's API's for this. It's doubtful that any of the VM's do either. USB can be an issue too, and some instruments may not work in an emulated environment. I already had Ubuntu 10.10 installed, so thought I'd try installing WinXP after, then recovering the MBR. Lots of headache.

I am using CentOS 5 with a couple extra repos; KDE, RPMforge, adobe and a repo provided by Mike A. Harris which has very new Firefox(3.6.3) and other packages. Understandably I am using an, at press time, unsupported version of Firefox. (I use updated packages at Adobe, KDE, and of Firefox for bleeding edge media support and website testing)
Most sites are working fine, including all sites that I have tried at the www.centos.org domain. Wikipedia, Pandora, AOL Mail, Dell, Facebook, Hulu, Google, Linksys, all of the other sites I have built and many more seem to work fine. When directing Firefox to anything on the CentOS wiki X seems to crash (the screen goes blank for a second, it flashes a Console login such as found at ctrl+alt+F1 and the gives me the X login screen) running services are un-interrupted, but all GUI programs close (Firefox and OpenOffice do recover data). I was running yum from a console and it was not interrupted.
Has anyone else had this issue with a newer version of Firefox? Again it is only seeming to affect the CentOS wiki. Not a worry since I only use the wiki for reference configuring my machine, and Konqueror browses it just fine. Anything I should do to help developers and other users? Bug reports? Ideas on how to fix it?

Ive been searching half the internet for a solution for a strange problem im having with a server (CentOS 5.2 Final). For no apparent reason, the server will just be powered off.I've looked in the dmesg log and /var/log/messages file, but that doesnt show anything, except the "syslogd 1.4.1: restart." message after booting it up again, and hours in advance of the crash a "suhosin" alert message.

My X crashes when I...
1) ssh to a remote centos server using X11 forwarding
2) open the virt-manager remote application (the virtualization management app)
3) Open the remote console
Just to be clear, my local X11 crashes. I get back to the log in screen.
I get in my Xorg log:
Backtrace:
Fatal server error:
-Is this enough for a bug report?
-How I can make X dump a core file for better debugging?
-Do -debug RPM packages still exist, and if so, should I install one for the X server and will this help with debugging, and if so, how do I install it.
