I need to downgrade glibc due to a broken kernel after a libc6 upgrade attempt. See:[URL]..Especially with the reduced capabilities I have right now (few if any programs are working), how might I go about downgrading glibc to 2.6?

Yesterday, I think I did something stupid: I removed kernel-headers, gcc, glibc-devel and glibc-headers. My box is a CentOS 5.4 webserver (it has loads of packages installed, but that was done through Virtualmin config, so it's quite coherent all in all). The thing is that now I need to reinstall at least the headers and glibc, but hey! this is what I get :

I do yum update it says nothing to update. Coming from the Suse world at 11.2, glibc is already at 2.9, how do I update, there is a lot of dependencies on glibc.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am in very much need to resolve the issue of Upgrade redhat5 from glibc 2.5 to glibc 2.7. The problem is when I run a binary compiled on our build setup (glibc 2.11) on Suse 11 (glibc 2.9) it works fine...
But the same binary do not work on redhat enterprise version 5 telling error as need glibc2.7 or sometimes segmentation fault for the same binary execution.
I tried upgrading the redhat glibc 2.5 to glibc 2.7, but not successful.
I made an update of my Centos 5.5 yesterday. In doing so glibc has been updated to glibc.i686. Just now some of my FPGA tools crash. Unfortunately there isn't a downgrade for glibc.i686. How can I replace glibc.i686 by glibc.i386?A simple yum install glibc.i386 conflicts with the files from package glibc-2.5-65.i686

View 6 Replies View RelatedI got a rather big problem since an attempt to upgrade.My debian version is 8.0.I upgraded when apt proposed the change. I did that in two steps, with apt-get upgrade and then apt-get dist-upgrade, with the installation of a new kernel. I moved from 3.2.0-4-686-pae to 3.16.0-4-686-pae.Since the upgrade, I can't boot my system any longer.During the boot sequence, this message appears with a countdown (it's copied by hand) :

At the end of the countdown, the boot sequence starts again, and ends up on an invite to log in as root in rescue mode. I can't connect (maybe due to some azerty/qwerty issue, I got a French keyboard. I tried to type in "qwerty mode", with no success (the password is not prompted)).I can connect with the 3.2 kernel however, selecting it form the grub interface. I can't log in in rescue mode either, but with this kernel the boot sequence goes on and I can log as a regular user or as root, at the end of the boot sequence. There is no X, but the system seems to work.What could I do to make the system boot properly with the new kernel, or to go back to the 3.2 version ?
I tried to run some virtual machine using Virtual Machine Manager but the guest OS (windows server 2003) was not able to "see" the rest of my network. I believe VMM did some NAT-ing (192.168.122.x subnet) so i'm not able to "see" my network. I tried various network setting in VMM but couldnt get it to pull my network IP (192.168.1.x subnet).So i installed VirtualBox as a work around because i know VB work when i tried it on my windows machine. I ran into some issue getting VB to run, i think it was that i need to compile the kernel to "optimize" it for VB. I am fairly new to linux so that the impression that i get when i research for the fix to get VB working. In some of the forum post people suggest few things and it seem to me like it to compile the kernel. After a few hours of working i finally got it to compile but the computer crashed during compilation.
I am guess what happened is that i was trying to optimize the kernel for VB but the version of kernel i was using (2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen) is already optimized for xen (VMM) so it crashed. I am looking to restore or recompile the 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen kernel. I am not sure if this is the right thing to do to fix it. With my limited knowledge of linux that all i can think of.
I have a number of CentOS 5.4 machines that use kerberos to authenticate. This works fine. However, after upgrading one of them to CentOS 5.5 it is no longer possible to log in.
In 5.4, I get this in the log:

Note the absence of the line where libkrb5 asks for a password. Running "kinit hans" on the machine (as root, who can log in) works as it should, so I don't think anything is wrong with kerberos as such (as I did yesterday, in [URL]. Clients still running 5.4 have no problems, so the problem was introduced in 5.5.

On step 3, compiling ... module.I get No rule to make target `build' Stop.When I go to the /lib/modules/2.6.18.194.3.1.el5 directory, the Build file link is broken.If i go to the link source /usr/src/kernels/2.6 ...x86_64 does not exist. The /kernels folder is empty.I think I need to reinstall the identified kernel in that directory and reestablish a link to it. but am not savy enough to do that on my own.
I am currently working to get to a stable dual boot Win7/CentOS 5.5 configuration on a Dell Latitude E6510 with the Intel 82577LM chipset. I haven't gotten the Centrino N WiFI chipset working yet, but the Eth0 device was working just fine.However, yesterday I did a system update. I did not pay close attention, but I believe the update did mention networking, because I thought it might help me get my wireless going. Now, Eth0 fails with the message, "Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable?" It does this at boot up and if we try reactivating it once the system is up. We have tried unstalling and re-installing the driver.The Window 7 boot sees the adapter and runs just fine. I was at a different site location yesterday when everything was working, but my co-workers and I can't help but think it might be related to the update yesterday, since everything worked prior to the update and Windoze 7 works fine with the adapter.
I have not been able to mount my NTFS harddrive on the CentOS side, despite installing fuse, and I don't have wireless, which makes it difficult to get access to new drivers. I also have a FAT32 partition that would be great to share between the boots for passing info, but I haven't found a way to mount a FAT32 partition in CentOS.
After upgrading to CentOS 5.3 my sendmail will no longer deliver messages using a program in my /etc/smrsh. It fails with the message "unknown mailer error 1". This program was working perfectly before I did the upgrade using yum. Here is the list of packages that were upgraded. Does anything jump out as being the source of the issue? I don't believe that sendmail itself was upgraded:

I had a working client installation with CentOS 5.4, using kerberos and PAM to authenticate. After an upgrade to 5.5, logins for users are no longer possible. Instead I get this:

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first
Now I'm not sure it is good advice to do sudo apt-get install in force mode, since the problem seems to be - I'm guessing - that update manager is trying to install packages with are for the unity desktop and not my classic gnome+compiz 8.6 desktop.

I was just about to reboot the system when I realized that it runs VMWare Server Instance that will most likely fail to restart after kernel upgrade (I had a hard time fixing it after previous kernel update). I just tried installing another version of libc6 (2.10.2-6) with kpackage. It didn't work so I had a broken package on my system. I then wanted to fix it with synaptic package manager which then told me in order to remove it, I had to pretty much uninstall all of linux. I then tried installing the older version of libc6 (the one I'm supposed to have: 2.7-18lenny2). That gave me the error code

I have tried to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 three times and I have had no success. Every time I get the blank purple screen and go through hell to get it back to a usable point. I have been reading and researching about this issue and have had no luck. I have went through the steps of the sticky at the top of the forum and got no where. I have been trying to set up openVPN on a Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 10.04 with the eventual intention of having a closed VPN in the workspace I'm at, and a bridged internet connection out through the server.My initial process/instinct was to go through Webmin. After a fair bit of tooling around making eys/certificates, I was able to get a response (and that's all it was, really) from my windows machine accessing the VPN server. However, in my attempt to bridge the network, I have lost all internet/networking capabilities from the server.Fortunately I am able to access the server directly from the hardware underneath (i.e. I don't need to SSH in or anything), and so I've been attempting to restore the server's networking back to default. I have returned the /etc/network/interfaces file to it's original state (just the loop, and an eth0 on dhcp) and restarted the networking. A check with ifconfig returns what seems to be a working eth0, and the loop (noting else) however I am unable to ping any outside server. When I do, I am given the message:From XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable(where of course XXX is my IP address).nother VM on the server is able to access the internet just fine, so it's not the overall server hardware...I guess at this point I'm just trying to take steps back,

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been working to get gcc up and running on a new install of Fedora 13. glibc-devel had dependencies upon installation where it required glibc and glibc-common, both 2.12.1-3. No problem, found both at rpm dot pbone dot net. However, when I try to install the following circular dependency results... it doesn't matter the order of install.

Can't boot at all. At first, was able to boot using LiveCD USB but now whether I plug it or not, computer freezes at blank screen with blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.

Is this a mistake or is this normal or is there a reason for it ? I just made my own glibc package to fix this, but was wondering why this is the way it is...
