Ubuntu :: Apt-get Update And Then Attempt To Install The Package?
Dec 16, 2010
when I perform an apt-get update and then attempt to install the package cifs.utils it says that it cannot find the package but in Ubuntu 10.04 it does find it in 10.10. Does this package have another name or is it that the standard repositories to not have it in there list?

While attempting to identify the cause of a crash in X, invoked by KMyMoney, following a change of graphics card hardware, I was advised to try another graphics driver. As a result my system start only in comand prompt mode and I cannot Startx.Somehat foolishly I followed the Howto on installing the 'latest and greatest nVidia drivers'. The installation failed (most alarmingly because the driver that the nViida web-site identified as being appropriate - X86-256.44 - actually issued an warning message during installation telling me that it did not support my installed hardware!). The recovery recommended in the Howto also failed (as I suspected it might).
If I press Ctrl+Alt+F7 at the command prompt I get many error/warning messages, starting with multiple instances of the following pair:"unknown parameter encountered""ignoring unknown pararmeter"and the system then enters a wait after the message 'checking battery status' - which confuses me, as, aside from the CMOS battery, there is no battery on my desktop system.If I issue the startx command I get many error/warning messagesincluding:
"using config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
"using config file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

I'm running F12 and Package Updater has been telling me to update Thunderbird for two days but fails on every attempt. I tried to go the yum route today with
yum remove thunderbird
yum install thunderbird
And I get this error:
Error: Package: thunderbird-3.0.10-1.fc12.i686 (updates)
Requires: nss >= 3.12.8
Installed: nss-3.12.7-6.fc12.i686 (@updates)
nss = 3.12.7-6.fc12
Available: nss-3.12.4-14.fc12.i686 (fedora)
nss = 3.12.4-14.fc12
Is there any way I can update nss such that Thunderbird will have access to the correct version or is this something that is in process for the repository?

I have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.
I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.
I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.

I'm getting the following error every time i run the package manager to install or update etc..
Code:
E: nxserver: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Despite the error, apt still works and allows me to install/remove apps.
The application in question also works fine too.

My question is: How to skip the installation of a package when using yum update from the command line? i.e., How would one update a system from command line and skip/not update kernel?

I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?

I was trying to get the package ready to install my Graphics card to the new update. This is the problem that I am having.
Code:
Problem: nothing provides kernel-devel = 2.6.35-21 needed by kernel-syms-2.6.35-21.1.x86_64 Solution 1: do not install kernel-syms-2.6.35-21.1.x86_64 Solution 2: break kernel-syms by ignoring some of its dependencies Choose from above solutions by number or cancel [1/2/c] (c): c Now the vanilla kernel is 2.6.35-21 were as the "default" opensuse one is 2.6.35-20. I have googled and told opensuse download search engine to look for the 2.6.35-20. I cannot find it at all.
If I upgraded to the vanilla kernel without the opensuse patches would it make my machine unstable? Or can I tell it to break some of the dependencies?

how certain packages such as glib, yast2, etc. are part of "Online update" i.e. new versions show up there, whereas certain packages are not (e.g. NVIDIA drivers). Is it a setting on the repository, the package, or does the new version need to be labelled specifically?

I think opensuse should provide regenerated ISO files to public after several package updated. I think this may help reduce duplicate bug reports and reduce net traffics. I think this can greatly increase the user experience of opensuse.

I'm having similar problem to someone else here in the forum (see [URL], but only with the 64 bit version of CentOS 5.5. Almost every time I try to install it, it will crash at some point in the "interactive" startup phase (but it is random). One time, I actually reached the install desktop. I did not attempt an install. I shut the machine down and the system crashed. I haven't been able to get to the install desktop since then.
I have successfully installed CentOS 5.5 32bit, however, on this same machine. In fact, I am writing this from a VM running under CentOS 5.5 32bit on this machine, and do all my work on this machine. I have since upgraded to the latest 2.6.18 kernel with PAE and latest VirtualBox; I have not experienced ANY instability at all with this machine so far. Occasionally, VirtualBox gets an error booting the client, but it has been rare and I've seen this even on older VirtualBox versions on a previous mainboard, so I am not particularly suspicious of that. It is a brand new system, only about a month old. All new parts, except for mostly unused hard drives and drive bays.

I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

I installed from a live CD when it came to selecting the partition I re-sized the partition that Ubuntu was on because it was 68 gigs I shaved off 15 gigs for SUSE. Then I selected this new 15gig partition to install SUSE on, everything went fine with the installation I was tinkering around on SUSE but of course I needed internet access, so I go to get on Ubuntu where I had my file with my network key. I restarted expecting to see the usual GRUB boot-loader screen only now with an added option for SUSE. Instead I see an entirely new layout for the GRUB boot loader and all that is listed is SUSE, Failsafe SUSE, Windows XP, and Floppy. The Windows is my XP install and it loads fine sadly it is actually what I'm using now because it is the only thing left that I have my network key saved so I can get on this forum.
Looking on SUSE I notice that the 50gig partition formerly known as Ubuntu still exists I figure no problem add the partition back on to the boot-loader and I'm good to go. Added it and when I select to load it nothing happens it starts to then reverts back to the OS list. Does anyone A) Know how to resolve this or have any ideas. B) Think I can at least copy files off that 50 gig partition to an external hard drive.

Directory is in /var/www/html/
I have other test pages in the /var/www/html/ directory that I can access ... I know this seems like a permission issue and in fact the error log states this is a permission issue, but I cannot figure what is the problem here.

Background information: I need to install WinXP on my computer to use Spectraview II software for monitor profiling. Tried it under Wine, didn't work...thought about virtualization, but Graeme Gill (creator of Argyll) said that probably wouldn't work:
Quote: The problem is that emulators often don't implement hardware details properly or at all. There's no standard way on Linux to read/write the DDC, so there is no surprise that wine doesn't emulate MSWin's API's for this. It's doubtful that any of the VM's do either. USB can be an issue too, and some instruments may not work in an emulated environment. I already had Ubuntu 10.10 installed, so thought I'd try installing WinXP after, then recovering the MBR. Lots of headache.

I am attempting to install debian for the first time on my pc that has no cdrom drive. I downloaded the Jessie CD image and wrote it to a 4GB stick, it didnt work. Then tried the netinstall image but face the same issue.
To write the usb stick I used unetbooting first, then tried win32diskimager and finally tried DD while stick was not mounted
Code: Select alldd if=debian.iso of=/dev/sdb BS=4MB; sync
Issue is still the same: I boot from the usb and after selecting language and keyboard it fails to detect cdrom drive (no drive at all in my pc). Same behavior using normal or expert mode.
Im also unable to manually specify the drive (it looks at /cdrom and I wanted to change it to the usb stick itself or mount usb to /cdrom but I cant find my stick in /dev)

I think the installation caused the corruption of the partition table. I removed the last 3 logical partitions and gparted correctly reported the 2 remaining distros and the swap. The problem hopefully will be solved when I reinstall those distros. I have a 160 gig HD with 3 Linux,1 swap,and a Windows partition. I attempted to install PCLINUXOS unsuccessfully. When I rebooted I had the same grub. I checked gparted and it indicated all 160 gigs as unallocated. fdisk shows the partitions. and indicates one partition as empty where I attempted to install PCLOS.
No problem in accessing any of my distros, but currently I can't make any changes to my HD. I've tried parted magic and there was no solution there. I have been unable to download the Ubuntu Rescue remix. Is there a way to restore? I haven't used fdisk or cfdisk for that purpose. I am beginning to think I would need to delete all of the partitions in the extended.

I have apparently installed " apt-cdrom add" and then typed "apt-get update" and I tried to install the mirror when the system was installed but as the wireless was not connected it apparently did not add the correct details.
