CentOS 5 :: Star Not Tarring All Files?

May 24, 2010

I have CentOS 5.5 installed with this uname -a result: Linux 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5.centos.plus #1 SMP Wed Mar 17 20:01:32 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.I am trying to use star to back up the machine, but it seems to stop before it has tarred all the files. Here is my star command:

star -c -FFFFF -xdev -sparse -acl -link-dirs -wtardumps -xattr -H=exustar -copysymlinks level=0 f=/backup/24-May-2010-Full/Full.tar -C / . This then runs for a short while, creates an archive of about 230MB and reports: star: Success. Error moving extended header '././@PaxHeader'.finished!

I am using this star release star 1.5a75 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu) and I have used .exclude on some my directories. When I check the files archived using -t, only a limited number of the files have actually been tarred. It is also reporting that this is a partial dump rather than a full dump.

Ubuntu :: Won't Star After Updating Graphic Driver

I'm basic Ubuntu user. I got new notebook Acer 5745G with GeForce GT 330M. There is no problem installing Ubuntu. After that I'm installing the recommended Nvidia driver. Everything goes well until the system asks me to restart. I'm making restart and that's it. The loading screen is not showing so as the log in screen. And the solution for now is to uninstall and install Ubuntu again. I thing updating the graphic driver is necessary thing. Not sure if this is a bug, but for sure the system is not working after updating it.

Firefox 3.x is very slow to start and slow to run but I'm used to it and everything works. Haven't tried 4 yet, waiting for it to land in the Mint repo.Chromium is really fast but lacks RSS feed handling. I have to right-click on a feed, copy the address and paste it into Liferea. Chromium used to be crashy but has improved a lot. I am using Chromium from the testing repo until something better comes along.Midori has poor bookmark management but is otherwise OK. On a gtk system it is really fast loading. I used it for a couple months but recently switched to Chromium.

As I can see, the module itself recognizes the webcam, but fails in the process.Does someone have some idea of fixing? Should I report it to launchpad (and so, which section?)?

I am assuming that the second to the last entry is the pci usb card. Is there a way to home in more deriectly to find and troubleshot the problem and see if its module or IRQ?

Ubuntu :: Adjust Permissions For Folders And Files On NTFS USB Drive?

May 21, 2010

First off I want to apologize for the fact that the first several paragraphs go into something seemingly unrelated to the subject of this thread. However I want to be sure that those who choose to lend me a hand understand where I'm coming from and why I'm asking that question.I just recently switched from Windows Vista to Ubuntu 10.04. So far I've been loving it mostly. But their is one oddball thing I haven't been able to get working. That is a pair of shared folders located on my NTFS external drive connected via USB2.

The drive was automatically mounted on first boot and has full read/write access for owner (which is my username) right out of the gate. For this reason I assumed I would be good to do this.I've been unable to get it working in Ubuntu. As it stands now I've manually added them to smb.conf, added them to the Samba Server Configuration and finally by right clicking the folder in nautilus and choosing Sharing Options. All with varying resultsAt best it will show the shares under the computer but not allow access. I've also cleared out all of these for those folders to try them individually or in different orders. What I found was that using Sharing Options first gives this error and sets nothing up. But either of the other two will at least show the share albeit with no access.

Quote:'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot convert name "Everyone" to a SID. Invalid parameter. What I've discovered is that if I use just the Sharing Options from Nautilus on any folder located on my ext4 partition or the internal NTFS partition then it will ask if applicable to adjust the permissions and though nothing appears in smb.conf that it works more or less just fine.Having played with "ls -l" I discovered that by default that ownership of the folders on the external NTFS is set to myself and that permissions are 700. On the ext4 partition ownership is set to myself and permissions on folders 711. The folders on the internal NTFS partition has an ownership of "root" and permissions set to 777

From here I tried to use "sudo chmod" via a terminal to manually change permissions for folders on all 3 partitions and I can do so for the ext4 and the internal NTFS owned by root. But no matter what I cannot for the external NTFS.The main thing is I want to know why I can't adjust those permissions on the external. I'm convinced that something to do with the way USB drives work by default must be impacting this but I could not find a single thing anywhere to confirm this much less to offer a solution. The second thing is that I installed and used mountmanager to automatically mount the internal NTFS and according to that softwares options the setup for both it and the external NTFS are the same. But if that is true then why is the external owned by me and the internal by root and the resulting permissions are completely different?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Get Samba To Share Files From Ntfs Drive?

Jun 12, 2009

The file permissions on the folder are RW for user, group and world.(umask=0000) My main problem is with SELinux, I've tried to audit2allow and that seemed to work, all I had to do then was chcon the directory and files to type samba_share_t but the tool fails with Operation Not Supported. Am I to assume you simply cannot share files from a mounted ntfs drive under SELinux? Because I've just spent 2 hours trying and I've just about ready to just give up and just go back to windows when I need to share those folders. There's no way i can copy the folder contents to my Linux partition, far too big for that. Has anyone EVER been able to do this? Do I have to disable SELinux to do it?

Ubuntu :: Put Back Wiped Window's Files To C Drive?

I accidentally wiped my mounted c drive with rm /media/MY_C_DRIVE/ -r (The actual path is /media/51FAEE1F4B26FD12/ - that's why I wasn't aware of it). After 3 seconds I realized that I just did something terribly wrong. I hit Ctrl+C to stop but it was too late. The important system files were gone and I couldn't boot into windows. So far, I have tried to recover the files with photorec. I could recover about 68,000 files from that c drive but the names are f000001.exe, f000002.txt, f000003.jpg,. I don't know what these files are and where to put them back. Is there any way to recover these system files?

Fedora :: Trash Does Not Show My Files/folders I Moved From NTFS Windows Drive

May 25, 2011

I am an Ubuntu refugee. Allow me to explain what happened. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and F15 x64.

(1) I wanted to created a shortcut of my "Documents" folder in my Windows in Nautilus
(2) I opened the Windows drive by double clicking the drive under Devices, and navigated to my "Documents" folder (F15 already has ntfs-3g installed so no hassles there)
(3) I then dragged the folder to the sidebar to place it under the Trash icon--but for some reason, it would not let me do this, and accidentally got placed in the Trash bin.
(4) problem is I can't see this folder in the Trash bin (it is not even hidden)
(5) To check if the Trash bin actually captures items when we move files/folders to Trash, I tried sending a folder from my Home directory to Trash, and the folder appears in the Trash; it can even be restored to Home.
(6) Only files/folders from the NTFS formatted Windows drive do not appear in the Trash folder if sent there.
(7) I have Google searched this problem, but to no avail.
(8) I even thought that because the drive is not mounted 'officially' I would mount it using command line:

Code:

(9) But still I can't see the folders in the Trash
(10) Interestingly, when I try to unmount the Windows drive 'formally' then I get a message if I want to "empty the Trash"--I obviously chose not to--so I know there is my Windows Documents folder in there somehere.

Ubuntu :: NTFS Partition Lost / Get That Back?

Feb 26, 2011

I'm using Windows 7 and Ubuntu in two differents partitions in my hard drive. I was on Windows 7 and decided to reboot. When the grub screen should have appeared, instead the computer rebooted itself. It continues to do so. I put Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and it keeps "loading" forever, but doesn't hang. In the console, it said something like "input/output" error. I tried with my Win 7 DVD and it was the same: it doesn't reach the part where it shows the menu with all the installation options.

I tried with Gparted and it loaded fine. It showed all my partitions, but there wasn't (I think) more that I could have done with it. I tried then user Super Grub Boot. I finally could enter Ubuntu. Everything is fine except that it doesn't show my Window partition. It's like it doesn't exist anymore, so I can't backup my files. Now, I haven't tried loading Win 7 from Super Grub Boot (I'm going to do it just as soon as I post this), but this is pretty weird. Anyone have any idea what is going on and what can I do to this this?

Ubuntu :: Ubuntu 9.10 + NTFS-Config And Files Missing From NTFS Partition?

Apr 22, 2010

First off let me say that I love working with Ubuntu. It's a great OS to learn Linux on. Now on to my problem. I have a laptop that dual boots. Ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Been working just fine. I was using NTFS-Config to auto mount the Win7 partition during startup of Ubuntu. It has been running fine. I am able to move files between the linux partition and the NTFS partition with no problem. Now I've come across a problem. I big problem. Just this week I installed VirtualBox onto Ubuntu. I started creating virtual machines. 6 in all (3 Win 2k3, 1 2k8 and 1 Win7). I was saving the virtual machines to the NTFS drive as this was by far my largest drive. I used a directory titled "virtualbox" under the c:/users/public directory. This setup was working great. Was able to get my vm's patched and up to date. Created several snapshots. Basically I was a happy camper.

Last night I booted into Windows 7. OS started fine. I was just surfing the web. After that I rebooted the system and entered Ubuntu and started Virtualbox. I tried to start a vm and it complained that the virtual harddrive was missing. I checked to make sure that the path was correct for the virtual drive and discovered that the entire virtualbox directory that I created on the NTFS partion was gone!!! Everything else was in place and intact including music and large video files that I had downloaded to the Ubuntu partion and moved the the NTFS partion.

I save these virtual machines???? Should I abandon using NTFS-Config. This is somewhat critical since I had took sometime to create this test lab and to have it disappear from simply booting into Windows 7 is crazy.
