Ubuntu :: Deleted All NTFS / Cant Boot / Need To Get Back 10.04
Aug 12, 2010
I had to delete all my Windows partitions. I am making new NTFS partitions as I write (thanks to the Live CD). I have not deleted any of the Linux partitions But as a result of the deletion, I cant boot into Ubuntu 10.04. I dont wish to reinstall it because I had lots of packages, settings and scripts in my home directory. I tried getting back on track by using the sudo grub commands, but it could find grub. So I am stuck. Any help, please?

I have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Fedora12. Following is the partition structure of my harddisk.
Disk /dev/sda: 80.1 GB, 80060424192 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9733 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x5e5e5e5e
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 1912 15358108+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
[Code]...
I deleted the "/dev/sda8" through Windows Disk Management, and when i restarted the system. GRUB boot menu vanished and a GRUB console appeared. Then I booted my system using Fedora12 live USB and created a new partition at same place from where i deleted it, and then after restart my started working normally as it was before partition deletion.
But, I don't understand what actually happened. Can anyone tell me in detail what happened and why and what to do to avoid such things in future?

i was trying to edit my firefox apparmor profile. I used aa-genprof, and accidentally closed the terminal before the program was finished. Firefox wouldn't load properly after that whenever it was enforced. I uninstalled and reinstalled the profiles, but it didn't help.Finally I deleted the files for the profile itself ... now it will not reinstall them..I marked all the apparmor packages for complete removal and then reinstalled them but it will not put the original firefox profile back in.

I'm new to Linux and Fedora. I installed Fedora a short while ago and inadvertently deleted the top panel that lists the applications, files, etc. How can I get this back? I can't even access the terminal because that was listed under applications.

Is there like EasyRecovery for Linux? Free open source command-line based software strongly preferred.Expecting something like:
$ fat32_recovery --some-arcane-options dump.img dir/
Recovery in progress...
~ILE1.TXT -> dir/XILE1.TXT

I have accidentally deleted the soundmenu in the panel that comes with the new ubuntu 10.10. After going through various posts all I can see, is that the solutions provided only provide the applet for sound control and does not have any integration with any of the music players (in my case Rhythmbox).I really want that menu back as it made listening to music while using multiple desktops very easy.

I was playing around with the default panel that has the power icon (wrong lingo maybe) and the network/sound icons, etc.I deleted some items including the power icon and now for the life of me can't find it in the panel applets list in lubuntu.Is there a way to restore the default panel with the settings as when I first installed lubuntu.I also played with some spacings and other settings so would rather just get it back to normal/restore it vs add all the items back on and then play with the spacings again.

I'm using Windows 7 and Ubuntu in two differents partitions in my hard drive. I was on Windows 7 and decided to reboot. When the grub screen should have appeared, instead the computer rebooted itself. It continues to do so. I put Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and it keeps "loading" forever, but doesn't hang. In the console, it said something like "input/output" error. I tried with my Win 7 DVD and it was the same: it doesn't reach the part where it shows the menu with all the installation options.
I tried with Gparted and it loaded fine. It showed all my partitions, but there wasn't (I think) more that I could have done with it. I tried then user Super Grub Boot. I finally could enter Ubuntu. Everything is fine except that it doesn't show my Window partition. It's like it doesn't exist anymore, so I can't backup my files. Now, I haven't tried loading Win 7 from Super Grub Boot (I'm going to do it just as soon as I post this), but this is pretty weird. Anyone have any idea what is going on and what can I do to this this?

I've been using Knoppix "Live CD" 6.2 and partimage 0.6.7 to back up and restore my Microsoft Windows XP system volumes on various computers. However, partimage seems to be unwilling to back up one of these NTFS volumes which has bad sectors, some unreadable data. It hits that and stops. But this appears to happen at the same place when I have already used Windows to find and mark and, I assume, remove from use, the bad sectors. Hmm. I thought they'd be ignored. It appears I thought wrong.
If so, which of several other Linux-based or other partition backup tools may be suitable for the task - to ignore or tolerate bad sectors? The main goal is to be able to update the volume subsequently in a way that may be a terrible mistake, and in that case to restore the previous version. Sometime not too far in the future, I suppose I have to think about replacing the disk.

I was trying to delete a menu item that I no longer needed because its referenced application was uninstalled, but I ended up deleting the "Search for Files" item under Applications > Accessories instead. I hit the revert button but no dice (go figure). Anyone know where I can get another copy of the *.desktop file, or perhaps would someone care to attach it for me?

So I transfered a few folders with videos in them to the public folder on an Ubuntu 10.04 laptop I have from my Ubuntu 10.04 64bit laptop. When I wanted to delete the folder I didn't have permission so I ran "gksudo nautilus" so I could delete it as root. So I deleted the folder but I did not get the space back!
I went to /.local/Shared/Trash and one of the folders I deleted was there but deleting it didn't get that space back either.
I did some searching but most of what I find doesn't help or tells me to look in the folder /.local/Shared/Trash folder but that didn't help any.

I use Fedora 14. Today I deleted (by mistake) a "Keyboard Indicator" from gnome panel. I tried to return this indicator to panel by "Add to panel...", but I could not find anything there. Search by google did not show any reasonable solution. Maybe some one here knows, how to return this "Keyboard Indicator"?
P.S. I have found Keyboard Indicator Manual from Gnome Library
http://library.gnome.org/users/gswit.../index.html.en
but it does not work.

yesterday I removed old kernels via. the synaptic manager- I'm 100% certain I did not removed the latest stable kernel, and the version before- I did however removed the oldest two. Now after restart I'm dead in the water- i cant get past the initial boot- the screen goes black. I i'm running ubuntu 9.10 double-booted with windows vista, and right now I cant even get into vista...
Let's say that I messed up with removing old kernels, and removed sth, that shouldn't be removed- but how does this mess up vista?

I deleted a Windows 7 release candidate partition from my computer. Now when I boot into ubuntu, it still tries to mount the deleted partition and I have to hit the letter 's' to skip mounting the partition each time my system boots. Where is ubuntu getting this partition information from and what can I do to remove it?
