I installed Debain onto my computer onto my second harddrive. every thing worked well until i ran windows and saw that second harddrive disapeared from My Computer. i tryed using a short cut on the desktop to link to it but it said it could not be found. How to uninsall debain or at least help get the files on the drive back.
View 3 RepliesI accidentally wiped my mounted c drive with rm /media/MY_C_DRIVE/ -r (The actual path is /media/51FAEE1F4B26FD12/ - that's why I wasn't aware of it). After 3 seconds I realized that I just did something terribly wrong. I hit Ctrl+C to stop but it was too late. The important system files were gone and I couldn't boot into windows. So far, I have tried to recover the files with photorec. I could recover about 68,000 files from that c drive but the names are f000001.exe, f000002.txt, f000003.jpg,. I don't know what these files are and where to put them back. Is there any way to recover these system files?

When it is not plugged in, the system boots without any issues.
When it is plugged in, this hangs to the point I have to unplug the CPU.
I've been using Ubuntu for a few weeks now, and I like it a lot, but when I used the automatic partitioning tool on my portable hard drive (where I was installing it, it was my first time) I accidentally allotted half of the 640 GB to Ubuntu. Much more than it needs, it's unable to be accessed by Windows now. (I wanted around 40 GB for Ubuntu. Still more than it needs, but not too cluttered.)
However, I can't figure out how to erase the partition from the drive. I tried going in with the Windows Vista Drive Manager (or whatever it's called, the one that lets you manage partitions) and couldn't erase the partition. (I don't think I'd have any problems converting the partition back and combining the pieces again after doing so to work from scratch.) Does anybody have any idea how to do this so I can reinstall Ubuntu properly?
Oh, and GRUB is on the portable as well, so I won't have trouble with Windows booting up afterward, it's the main booter. (When the portable HD isn't plugged in, my laptop just boots Windows without asking about Ubuntu.)
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop alongside Windows 7 on the second 320 GB hard drives and now I want to replace it with a 750 GB hard drive, but when I removed it the grub was gone and Windows (on the first hard drive) wouldn't load. This was a mistake, since the grub is installed on the same hard disk as Ubuntu. I want to use GPorted to delete the partitions on the hard drive, but when I boot with it and use the hard drive partition editor it won't let me delete or move one of the partitions. Does this partition contain the grub and if so how do I move it onto my other hard drive?

Now I'd like to free up some space on my desktop to use it primarily as a gaming computer. I had Windows 7 installed long before I installed Ubuntu and I figured that uninstalling Ubuntu would be as simple as just deleting the hard drive partition but I can't see the partition in My Computer like I thought I would and when I googled how to do it I kept hearing people talk about Grub, which I have completely no understanding of. I just want to delete Ubuntu without harming the programs I have installed on my Windows partition.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am slowly learning Linux by bringing up a server. Using tasksel, I installed the LAMP-server, which went fine. Now, however, I have mucked about with various config files and made the setup unusable. I'd like to do uninstall all of the LAMP packages and do a clean (and more thoughtful) install. Here's the problem: tasksel returns an "aptitude failed (100)" error. I have search various forums and all of the help related to this error (which I can't actually find *explained* anywhere) is related to installing packages. I tried them anyway, without success. man pages and the stack of manuals I have don't seem to be of much help either.

- a way to remove the packages or the config files by hand?
I've just moved all my machines from Ubuntu to Squeeze and am currently trying to remove Open Office. When marking for removal and uninstalling OO the package manager requires that AbiWord and associated suite of office apps be installed as a replacement. I would like to completely purge both as I have little to no need for them, and the little I do use a word processor for I tend to use cloud based solutions. Is there a way to resolve the dependency that seems to exist that requires one or the other to be on the system at any given time?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a second hard drive in my desktop and both the main dirve and second drive are 250GB. I use the second drive for backups, both manual and using back in time. The other day I noticed that the second drive was formated in FAT32. If I go to disk utility and look at the drive it says:Usage:FilesystemPartition Type:Linux (0x83)Type:FAT(32-bit version)Is this ok? I thought in Linux it should be Ext4. So far its been working fine for a while now but if I need to move my files and re format it to ext4 and move them back I would rather do it now when there is less data on the drive.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a question?! have a linux server which was administered by my good friend who has passed away and I have been asked to take over. the server has debian installed (installed oct 2008 and would have been the latest version) and I am looking to backup the smb shares to a external usb disc. I have formatted and mounted the disc and found a script he wrote to automate the backup run from a cron tab. Looking through the script the mount commands dont look quite right to me particulary as the owner will swap drives every day. everything else appears to be working fine! the command to mount in the script is'
mount /mnt/usb
and unmount;
unmount /mnt/usb
I think it should be' mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
and to unmount . umount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
am I talking nonsense here or I on the right track?
So I made a text file on a windows machine and brought it home on a flashdrive. When I opened it in PCMan File manager it did not show, but executing ls in a terminal shows the text file just fine. It is the only one that appears to be missing in PCManfm. I've had a similar problem going the other direction (Linux to Windows, but with pdfs) many months ago. here is ls -l

Been using Debian Squeeze for a few days now and I think it's a SUPERB distro. Everything works perfectly.
To my topic: "Software-center" hangs forever when I try to browse non-installed packages. A search on this forum shows that it's probably a non-solvable bug. No problem, I use Synaptic and am very willing to learn CLI apt-get commands. But for now, uninstalling software-center through Synaptic also wants to uninstall gnome (I assume "all of it"?), and I'm not going to agree on that!
I would like to back up my flash drive in case it gets lost or damaged.the flash drive is bootable with ext2 and a fat partition.the drive is on /dev/sdb1.I think the dd command would back everything up and when restored to a different flash drive everything would boot fine and be as before.I was wondering wow should I use this command to backup and restore or if there is a better option.

A couple of weeks ago, my CD/DVD drive stopped working. I'd put in a disk, the light would flash, but it wouldn't appear as a mounted drive. Thinking the drive had finally died, I bought a new one. Same problem.
The drive is recognized by BIOS. I have it as try to mount first in BIOS, and if I put in the Ubuntu boot CD, it boots.

into /etc/fstab, and then mount -a, the drive contents appear and are accessible. However, as expected, the system chokes on boot if there isn't a CD in the drive, and I have to mount -a manually every time I start the system. Ugly.
So this is pretty clearly a software OS problem. how I can get the automount for my CD/DVD drive back?
I am having an issue with my external drive not mounting. I am getting an error message "Unable to mount backup - not authorized".

I've dual booted my Vista before and while the main job went withou major incident...I do have a bad history of screwing up one or both partitions.Also, will GRUB still work okay with Windows 7? I'd hate to install UNR and then have the boot loader not let me into one (or both OSes).Without the recovery disks I don't really have a safety net. However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?
I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.

When I was installing ubuntu I assigned only 50 GB for it, thinking that I will use the remaining partition for windows. But right now after using UNR, I don't want to use windows at all. View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to save some .c files. The Red Hat Linux 5.5 machine I am on has a DVD multi recorder drive in it. A cdrecord -scanbus gives me "4,0,0 400) 'TSSTcorp' 'DVD+-RW TS-L633C' 'D250' Removable CD-ROM".
When I add "/dev/dvdrw /mnt/dvd-rw iso9660 user,kudzu 0 0" to /etc/fstab and do a mount /mnt/dvd-rw, I get "mount: block device /dvd/dvdrw is write-protected, mounting read-only", "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvdrw, missing codepage or other error".
I go about this another way? All I need to do is save some source files to the dvd and restore them on another machine.
=I do 'vim foo1.txt foo2.txt'. How do I switch from one file to the other?

I don't know the first thing about Linux and am totally lost trying to get back to my other hard drive to access the Windows XP OS.
