I have CentOS 5.5 installed with this uname -a result: Linux 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5.centos.plus #1 SMP Wed Mar 17 20:01:32 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.I am trying to use star to back up the machine, but it seems to stop before it has tarred all the files. Here is my star command:
star -c -FFFFF -xdev -sparse -acl -link-dirs -wtardumps -xattr -H=exustar -copysymlinks level=0 f=/backup/24-May-2010-Full/Full.tar -C / . This then runs for a short while, creates an archive of about 230MB and reports: star: Success. Error moving extended header '././@PaxHeader'.finished!
I am using this star release star 1.5a75 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu) and I have used .exclude on some my directories. When I check the files archived using -t, only a limited number of the files have actually been tarred. It is also reporting that this is a partial dump rather than a full dump.
In windows if i want to see/search for ALL files i go to the search app and type in *.* (star dot star). what is the procedure in linux/ubuntu? what command is it? i want to see ALL files on my NTFS usb back-up drive.

Firefox 3.x is very slow to start and slow to run but I'm used to it and everything works. Haven't tried 4 yet, waiting for it to land in the Mint repo.Chromium is really fast but lacks RSS feed handling. I have to right-click on a feed, copy the address and paste it into Liferea. Chromium used to be crashy but has improved a lot. I am using Chromium from the testing repo until something better comes along.Midori has poor bookmark management but is otherwise OK. On a gtk system it is really fast loading. I used it for a couple months but recently switched to Chromium.
I'm basic Ubuntu user. I got new notebook Acer 5745G with GeForce GT 330M. There is no problem installing Ubuntu. After that I'm installing the recommended Nvidia driver. Everything goes well until the system asks me to restart. I'm making restart and that's it. The loading screen is not showing so as the log in screen. And the solution for now is to uninstall and install Ubuntu again. I thing updating the graphic driver is necessary thing. Not sure if this is a bug, but for sure the system is not working after updating it.
I would like to install this game with Wine, but when I open one of the exe files I get a message saying the file is not executable and since it's in a CD I can't change the permissions to make them executable. What should I do in order to be able to play the game?
I'm having troubles using this not so new webcam. I didnt found any thread that have a problem like mine. In older kernel versions the webcam started working compiling and installing zc3xx module, but as far as I googled and lsmod this module now comes with default kernel. As I can see, the module itself recognizes the webcam, but fails in the process.Does someone have some idea of fixing? Should I report it to launchpad (and so, which section?)?
Half the time I click on a text box to write and star typing only to find out I'm typing somewhere other than where I clicked. It's not dwell click and the active text box seems to be related to mouseover.
I recently installed a startech PCI usb expansion card...All went well and all external devices connected show up without a hitch. However a day ago The card/devices just STOPPED. I rebooted and no avail. Rebooted a second time got a IRQ 19 failure error. Then on a third try It showed up and worked fine... This has happened twice. Here's my IRQ print after running cat /proc/interrupts
I am assuming that the second to the last entry is the pci usb card. Is there a way to home in more deriectly to find and troubleshot the problem and see if its module or IRQ?
Why does centos-release-notes have any dependancies ?
I can see no reason why centos-relese-notes should depend on centos-release when I try "yum erase centos-release-notes" I am told there are 72 dependancies including completely irrelevant packages such as tar all because of this unnecessary dependancy.
The centos-release-notes package simply contains a bunch of text/html files that nothing else relies upon, so why the dependancies ?
I have once tried transferring files from Redhat 9 web files to Centos 5.5 /var/www/html/ directory. Ok... LAMP is installed and working fine. httpd / apache is running and mysqld is installed without root password. Now I wan't to transfer it again to secure the database from Centos 5 to fedora 13. But when I tried browsing the web to check the web files I can only see these:
I am wondering what is the fastest way for me to move files from a VPS running CentOS to my home PC? I do not have FTP or anything like that installed. Are there commands I can enter in putty, for example, that will simply download an entire directory on the VPS onto my home PC?
I have a file of +1 1GB in size. I want to split it in either 100MB rar files or 100MB zip files.
Anybody know what command I need for this?
Please keep it simple, I'm very new to linux. So I'm hoping somebody can give me a command in the lines of "blabla "put file name here" "put file size here" "put folder to rar/zip" here.
I have uploaded a load of files and now found there a bug when i try to zip the file thats over 2gb in size. I am a quite a notice with this so need easy instructions on how i get it to work.
I followed this tutorial: [url]
And the error i get is Quote:zip warning: name not matched
I have CentOS 5.5 Operating System files copied from the DVD, it's not a ISO image. My Centos dvd is not working so, I would like to make bootable image and burn it on a DVD from the files and install CentOS on other machine. I have tried creating ISO image using mkisofs command but, it is not booting.
Here is a dumb question (For some reason I can never remember Linux commands but can always remember DOS commands). I don't know what it is, but I think it's the "everything is a file or a directory" nature of Linux that I can't remember it.
Anyhow, I have an instance running on Amazon EC2. I have noticed recently that FreePBX (an Asterisk GUI) is warning me of shortage of disk space. So here is the output:
So, it seems that I have a lot of space in sda2 but I don't know how to access it. how to do a symbolic link (or I can search with google) to move some folders to sda2 and then link them.

Using PHP 5.2.10 on CentOS 5.4. I need to run a PHP call that will extract all the files from a .zip file. Is there a function to do this or something in PHP I need to enable or install?
I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my smb store. The CentOS box is merely a client of the smb share, and I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I'm 95% certain that the server runs Windows Server 2003.I can create a new file, but if I need to overwrite it I need to delete the file, and then copy the new version over.My Windows XP machine can overwrite files perfectly fine.
Using the cp command I'll get this error: (/mnt/storage/foo.txt already exists) [jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/storage/foo.txt cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`
