I was running 1 HDD with 2 partitions 1 for win 7 and other for files ect, i installed ubuntu today over the win7 partition and now i cant access my backed up files on the second partition but for some reason it became a swap drive for ubuntu does anyone one know how to save the partition ?

I'm trying to format a hard drive inside of my dads laptops because he, probably like most of you, hates windows vista which came pre-loaded with the laptop. So i loaded my 4g flash drive with the ubuntu os on it and ran it on the computer. I see that i can reformat the hard drive inside the computer as a FAT file, but to save me and my dad some time i was hoping there was a way to re format it to NTFS format.o is there a command line or anything that i can download which can reformat this hard drive in NTFS format

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows 7 and Ubuntu in two differents partitions in my hard drive. I was on Windows 7 and decided to reboot. When the grub screen should have appeared, instead the computer rebooted itself. It continues to do so. I put Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and it keeps "loading" forever, but doesn't hang. In the console, it said something like "input/output" error. I tried with my Win 7 DVD and it was the same: it doesn't reach the part where it shows the menu with all the installation options.
I tried with Gparted and it loaded fine. It showed all my partitions, but there wasn't (I think) more that I could have done with it. I tried then user Super Grub Boot. I finally could enter Ubuntu. Everything is fine except that it doesn't show my Window partition. It's like it doesn't exist anymore, so I can't backup my files. Now, I haven't tried loading Win 7 from Super Grub Boot (I'm going to do it just as soon as I post this), but this is pretty weird. Anyone have any idea what is going on and what can I do to this this?
I had to delete all my Windows partitions. I am making new NTFS partitions as I write (thanks to the Live CD). I have not deleted any of the Linux partitions But as a result of the deletion, I cant boot into Ubuntu 10.04. I dont wish to reinstall it because I had lots of packages, settings and scripts in my home directory. I tried getting back on track by using the sudo grub commands, but it could find grub. So I am stuck. Any help, please?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Knoppix "Live CD" 6.2 and partimage 0.6.7 to back up and restore my Microsoft Windows XP system volumes on various computers. However, partimage seems to be unwilling to back up one of these NTFS volumes which has bad sectors, some unreadable data. It hits that and stops. But this appears to happen at the same place when I have already used Windows to find and mark and, I assume, remove from use, the bad sectors. Hmm. I thought they'd be ignored. It appears I thought wrong.
If so, which of several other Linux-based or other partition backup tools may be suitable for the task - to ignore or tolerate bad sectors? The main goal is to be able to update the volume subsequently in a way that may be a terrible mistake, and in that case to restore the previous version. Sometime not too far in the future, I suppose I have to think about replacing the disk.
I have a second hard drive in my desktop and both the main dirve and second drive are 250GB. I use the second drive for backups, both manual and using back in time. The other day I noticed that the second drive was formated in FAT32. If I go to disk utility and look at the drive it says:Usage:FilesystemPartition Type:Linux (0x83)Type:FAT(32-bit version)Is this ok? I thought in Linux it should be Ext4. So far its been working fine for a while now but if I need to move my files and re format it to ext4 and move them back I would rather do it now when there is less data on the drive.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFor a while now i have been backing up (rsync) to a 1.5TB NTFS formatted USB drive.Now the time has come that i need that backup Looking at the contents of the NTFS drive, all my symbolic links have been converted into a single file which contents starts with the text "IntxLNK". It seems this is some kind of SMB/CIFS/Microsoft link file.
Does anyone know how i can convert these "link files" back into linux symbolic links?
I've got a mapping app (Memory Map) + 25Gigs of maps on an NTFS drive on this computer. When I try to find maps it throws up the windows dialogs showing me whatever drives wine has configured eg
c: (something that Wine has invented and looks like a windows install)
d: (dvd drive)
z: this is the root of the linux drive
I dont know the linux file system very well I thought NTFS drives would appear under dev or mnt I have to use the gui to mount the NTFS drive each time (grrrr...) though I have installed NTFSConfig after some slight research that I thought would do the job for me a boot time.
Is this an issue with Wine, do I need to search through the Z: path until I find the NTFS file system, do I need to add a line to the mount script etc etc
We have a VMware box that is connected to a Thecus. The Thecus FTPS the WMware virtual machines onto a PC which has a 2TB drive.
We are trying to see if we can get the FTP'd VMware Virtual machines to run on another WMware node.
However Vmware use's NFS so we can't mount the drive as it's NTFS.
We are attempting to mount the NTFS drive in ubuntu. Can this be done and can it be turned into a NFS share without formatting the drive.
I have an external USB drive that I want to format but I can't find a Linux utility to do this. I would also like to quickly and easily format USB zip drives too. The ability to format in FAT, NTFS or EXT? would be good as well. GParted seems like overkill.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just tried mounting my Iomega 1tb hard external hard drive, but it doesn't seem to work. The drive doesn't show up in nautilus. When I look at it with parted it shows as a ms-dos filesystem. If I plug it into my imac, it shows doesn't mount either, but in the driveutility it shows up as a fat32.Windows 7 doesn't seem to helpfull as it just says that the drive needs to be formatted.Is there any way to recover my files before I format, or better yet solve this problem without formatting?

The partition is mounted and I can read/write.
However, for the other user the partition is not showing up. What to do?
I've tried changing the permissions from nautilus, but no success.
So I currently have OSX and Windows 7 install on my hardrive - I would like to add 10.04 in the mix, however it will not let me resize my Windows partition because it does not recognize it as ntfs. It will not let me mount it via cli or gui and gparted will only offer to remove the partition - not resize.

Not sure what happened but it worked fine till last reboot. It's a 250g NTFS drive named MEDIA device /dev/sda1. why it won't mount now.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to set a label for my Windows partition, but it seems risky. Here's a picture of GParted before I attempt to set a label w/ the drive unmounted (wont let me change label when mounted):
After I set a label, the image goes empty as if it will format if I click 'Apply': My question, is it safe to hit apply or will it wipe my drive, and if so, why? In Windows I can just set a label even with the drive mounted.
