OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Print With Olivetti PR2
Feb 1, 2011
I have Linux SuSe 11.3 installed, the printer is Olivetti PR2, it's an old passbook printer, and the printer is connected VIA SERIAL port. When installing via CUPS, i have the option for serial port available, I am trying to use all possible drivers for the printer, e.g.:
- generic postscript drivers
- IBM Proprinter II drivers
- IBM Generic drivers
- any Olivetti drivers.
The printer is in READY status, printer seems installed in CUPS, when i try to print a test page, it creates a job, printer sets to status PROCESSING, but does nothing. No printing, no sounds from the printer self. How to check, if the printer is recognized as a device in linux, and if the data can be sent to printer at all ?

I just installed openSUSE 11.4 on my 2 home machines. My home network lies behind a nat router but I still use the external zone setting for my firewalls. In the past to enable network printing between the two computers I opened TCP and UDP port 631. Yast would then see the remote printer, set it up and all was good. This time Yast sees and sets up the remote printer as usual. When I print the test page nothing happens. Checking the cups admin page at localhost:631 on the host machine shows the printer is set up to share but nothing is in the print que. Printing works just fine on the host computer.

i'm trying to add windows print drivers to smb for them to be automatically downloaded to the client upon printer installation. I've followed the samba.org Printing documents which have been helpful to some degree. I have an HP printer and i'd like to just upload and register the .inf,.dll.cab files that the manufacture cd comes with for the client to use the .inf file to install the drivers from that location but i keep getting Werr_invalid_PARAM
here is the syntax of what i'm trying to do.
rpcclient -d 4 -U 'username%password' -c 'adddriver "Windows NT x86"
"HP_Color_LaserJet_3800:hpbicoin.dll:hpc3800c.inf:hpc3800c.cat:hpc3800c.cab:hpcp3800.cf_6i2arww.cab6i2caww.cab6i2csww.cab' Server

I would like to build a server to act as a file/print server for my home. My wife, sister in law, and myself would use it. I would like it to be friendly to both windows and linux. My sister and I are both dual boot and for now my wife is windows only. Pretty soon though I plan on setting her up on linux as well. What would I need? And are there any "good" guides to setting something like this up?
I would like to use the system to:
- Store media / files
- Maybe have KMyMoney on it and share with the wife
- Hook a printer to and use as common printer

I have a Windows print server (Win XP SP2) and a 1 opensuse client. I have setup cups as per the following document:
Printer Sharing: Windows Print Server for Suse/openSUSE Linux Clients [Samba and LPD]
I am not using Samba. The setup went fine, but I am not able to print to it. There are other clients (all Windows) that are printing fine to this print server. The following is what I see in the /var/log/cups/error_log:
[Job 3] recoverable: Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds...
I am using DHCP in this LAN. Ping is working fine (client's hosts file updated with the print server's ip address.). This looks like a networking issue.

Total Newb here, sorry. I am pseudo-IT at work and have set up a desktop with Debian 5 (accidentally overwrote Windows in the process, but there you go). We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?

Fedora 15/Gnome3, latest updates as of 4pm EST 7/14/11.Trying to connect to a Canon inkjet printer, which is physically on a WindowsXP box via usb cable. Printer is made shared on the Windows machine. On the F15 machine, I can connect to all shared folders on the WinXP box via SMB.But trying to set up the printer connection from WinXP box to F15 is not working. I use Printing, then Network Printer, then enter the WinXP IP, then choose Find Network Printer. Note there's no CUPS or SMB printer choice - only AppSocket/JetDirect, IP, HTTPS/ and LPD. After a few minutes, I'm prompted to enter username and p/w for the WinXP machine, and the printer is located. Connection is verified.Connection is shown as Windows via SAMBA. I click OK and move to driver installation.

I am trying to print to a network printer from my 9.10 install. The printer is Canon_MF4360-4390, when browsing for printers, cups finds it immediately. I found drivers for this printer online (driver is called UFR_II_Printer_Driver_for_Linux_V200_uk_EN). The drivers installed without any problems.
I can go through cups and add the printer successfully. I can even print a test page that shows up in the queue as completed. However, nothing comes out of the printer. Also, there is nothing in /var/log/cups/error_log to show that an error has occurred.[URL]..

The printer is connected to a networked XP machine that is accessible from Ubuntu.
I have set up the printer as instructed in this help file...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsXPPrinter
SAMBA sees the printer on the network , verifies the printer and the driver loads.
Everything goes along just fine until "print test page" No go.
The printer shows up in the "Printing -local host" window.
Under "printer properties" the "Make and Model"are showing the correct device in the correct location.
The "Printer State" shows "idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
Is there something I might have missed in the set-up?

New 3040CN on 64-bit lucid. Test pages from console work fine. Cannot print using network or USB. Can http to printer on net, and system recognizes printer when USB attached. Downloaded and installed Brother's cups & driver files (despite being labeled as 64bit, they were i386) No 3040CN found in driver selection listings! system-config-printer thinks the driver should be for an Epson Stylus Photo 2200!
Tried various generic and foomatic PCL printers.
Tried attachment to lpd://10.10.10.20/binary_p1 and socket://10.10.10.20:9100. No results with lpd address, jobs are just lost. With socket address, get blank pages. Can't find an lpd file for this printer online.

I'm running Mint 9 as my main network and my wifes Acer Aspire 5610 running Windows vista. My problem is that I can't print from vista. It prints a test page just fine but when I tell it to actually print a document, the status says: "Access denied, unable to connect" I have 2 printers connected and they installed fine in Vista one is a HP LaserJet 2100 series and the other is an HP Photosmart C5280. Like i said, they both print the teat page just fine.

I'm getting mad trying to use a HP Business Inkjet 2200 over the network with my brand new Fedora 14 box.. The detection part is OK but I can print only 1 page, whatever it is: the test page or the first page of a document. After that, the printer is locked in "print" mode and no one can print any more until it was power down and powered up again. I say that it is locked in "print" mode because its LCD screen displays "print" instead of "ready".
I've tried all the different drivers available (foomatics and other gutenprints).I've tried with the JetDirect protocol or through a samba share.Always the same result: only one page printed then locked for every one..I'll try to find a way to attach the cups troubleshoot and a wireshark capture, they're to big for now..Could any body help me ? If not for me, do it for the community: my colleagues there all say that's normal since I'm using linux!!!

The company I work for decided to use printers on which one should log in with there MS Windows password. After logging in, one could print there documents. This is ok for the MS windows office PC's, but not for the Linux based systems. The Linux user accounts have a different name than the MS Windows accounts.Because of this, it is not possible to print with that Linux user account. I can create a Linux user account with the same username as the MS Windows account, so that all users can use that account if they want to print something on the network printers. They can use it like:$ ssh <username equal to Windows>@<hostname> "oowriter <path>/<file>"
Now they can print a file from oowriter to the network printer. So my question is, is it possible to use the account name that is equal to the MS windows account name by default?
example
MS Windows account name = milk
Linux account name = schuurs
Linux account "milk" is created for printing by all users.
user works with account "schuurs" and prints with user "milk" automatically without the use of the ssh string mentioned before.

I'm using Slackware64 13.0 on a laptop. I've set up the network printer which lives on a Windows Vista machine (not my choice) in the family room. I am able to send print jobs to the printer. That part works fine, but the printer does not print. It simply stacks up print jobs with "error - printing" in the status of the first print job.I think I understand what's happening. I'm sending the print jobs to the print server as "Guest" and I have no guest account activated on the vista machine. I'm sitting here racking my brain (ie googling my goddamn fingers into stumps) trying to figure out how to send the jobs to the print server as indubitableness.
For the goddamn life of me I can't figure out what I need to do to send these print jobs as a specific user. I've tried adding "valid users = indubitableness" to smb.conf and I've tried using the -U flag when running lpadmin to add the printer to my system in the first place. The configuration wizard for windows doesn't appear to have any options to enable guest access or to add a specific remote location and/or user to the allow list.I'm at a loss and I'm losing my goddamn mind.

I have an ubuntu server (9.04) that needs to share a printer (a Brother 2070N on USB). To configure cups, I had to modify cups.conf quite a bit to let me access the printer management pages, but I did get it working. I can print using the lpr command, as well as print test pages using the management interface's "Print Test Page" button from any computer on my network. However, I cannot actually set up Ubuntu, Fedora, Vista, or OSX to see the network printer, and it's driving me insane.Brother from any computer on the network I can see the specific printer management page, but no computer can actually print to the printer (other than using the "print test page" button)

I run Debian Squeeze but I have the system installed step by step from minimal installation. So I'm not sure if I have forgotten basic packages important for printing. I open system-config-printer to add a new network printer. In the list of the Network Printers after some seconds it appears the HP Color LaserJet 2600n. I chose it and hit Forward. A new window opens that says that system is searching for Drivers and finally I'm ready for printing.

When I go to System Admin/Printing to add my printers, screen says I am not connected to localhost and I am unable to use Add printer. When I used version 9.10, I added a network + a local printer by this method but I'm not sure what I have done wrong this time around.

I live in Japan and am trying to print to a network printer (Richo Ipsio C411 PS). Couldn't find the ppd in the foomatic database. At my previous school, I had no problems printing to the printers on the network once I found the ppd. A few months ago, I transfered to a new site. Unfortunately, when I send a print job on the network here, the printer just gives a Japanese message that says "command error." I've tried other printers on the network (all different models of the Ipsio).
I went to the Japanese Ricoh website and it recommended a generic printer ppd. I downloaded that, but it didn't work. Then I got the ppd off of the windows driver CD and tried that. Again, no success. I have no idea what I'm doing (obvious, but should be noted) or how to get this started. I also tried 2 versions of Ubuntu -- I'm running 8.04 and 10.04.
Attached are copies of the ppd files if it helps.

I just recently bought a WinStar USB LPR Network Print Server so that I could connect my printer to my network so all the machines on my network could print, and everything would be OS independent. The problem I'm having is that I can't get CUPS to connect to the printer. It either never prints anything, saying that the printer is not connected, or saying that LPR is spooling the job, but it never completes. I've been configuring it as a network printer in CUPS, and trying all the different configuration options to no avail. The print server is located on http://192.168.1.103 and is pingable. The print server I have is this one:
WinStars Networking USB LPR Print Server
What is the correct way to set up a print server like this so I can print to it?
