Feb 1, 2011I have Linux SuSe 11.3 installed, the printer is Olivetti PR2, it's an old passbook printer, and the printer is connected VIA SERIAL port. When installing via CUPS, i have the option for serial port available, I am trying to use all possible drivers for the printer, e.g.:
- generic postscript drivers
- IBM Proprinter II drivers
- IBM Generic drivers
- any Olivetti drivers.
The printer is in READY status, printer seems installed in CUPS, when i try to print a test page, it creates a job, printer sets to status PROCESSING, but does nothing. No printing, no sounds from the printer self. How to check, if the printer is recognized as a device in linux, and if the data can be sent to printer at all ?

Mar 28, 2011I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? Mar 16, 2010I am using OO 3.1 on Karmic 9.10. When working with Open Office Writer and either graphics or charts, a couple of things happen. First of all, the page position moves around. For example, if I click on a graphic I have inserted or on a chart, the page on my screen may shift up or down by a half inch or so. If I click back out in a text area, the page moves back to where it was. This is very annoying. Has anyone else had a problem like this? I have tried turning off compiz completely but it doesn't fix it

General :: Open Office Defaults ?
Jan 30, 2010I want to change some of the defaults in Open Office but it seems like it's trickier than it should be. An example of what I would like to change is the default outline format, I prefer the 1st option in the 2nd row (when going to format --> bullets and numbering), but I have to select it every damn time I have to do bullets, which is pretty much 50 times a day). I also HATE tab stop for bullets, I think they are horrible for placement and I prefer a space over a tab stop (I don't get how anyone can functionally use tab stop in outlines, once you hit III. it does a FULL TAB and throws off the alignment completely). I've complained about this to the developers and....they have bigger priorities.

/usr/local/bin/ooextract.py myDocument.doc myDocument.pdf
the open office deamon (sOffice.bin) takes 100% CPU load forever.
We are using Open Office 2.6.3 on a virtual machine running debian squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64
UPDATE:
We found out that this appears only with our test document, other documents can be converted without problem. But how can we find out what's wrong with our document. How can we enable traces/loggin o the sOffice.bin process?

Jan 7, 2011From my school I am able to get a free copy of Office 2007 via download. Now from the research I have done, it says that the best way to install Microsoft office is to use PlayonLinux. However, all the instructions I find on it is how to install it using a CD, whereas I will be getting it via a download not a CD. Can I still install it with PlayonLinux with the download? I'm guessing I would just point the PlayonLinux to where my downloaded file is, but I want to make sure before I order it. Also will its functionality be just as good as when its used on Windows. I ask, because even though I am a newbie to Linux, I am liking it and would like to completely switch. However, the copy of office from my school is more expansive than the one I currently have, so if it won't function as well I put my school copy on Windows, but if it does I'll use my school copy on my Linux since I will be eventually attempting to switch to it once I finish my course on Unix/Linux. By the way I have Fedora 14 for a 64 bit system, in case that effects anything.

Oct 23, 2010Since open office is now bought by oracle I am confused about the state of the latest version of OO version 3.2 I think. Would it be legal to install that version on a computer. Oracle perhaps made a bummer with this. The real dev community is thrown out and we are again looking at corporate greed taking precedence for their own profit rather than development of technology. I have high hopes from libre office but then one more open source product (it was not sun's to begin with remember) being swallowed by a corporate.
