I am using a emachine w2925 desktop and I installed the newest ubuntu. And it randomly goes to a black screen with white bars vertically half way down the screen that flash between bars and a black screen every few seconds.
View 6 RepliesMy computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu
I get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

I prefer ubuntu (which I have been meaning to install for a while) but my netbook currently has linpus lite on it. (It's an acer aspire one). One night I left the netbook sitting open (forgot to close it), and when I went to use it the next day, when I started it up, the desktop did not show the normal icons in the background. It still showed the bar at the bottom with the connection icon, power icon, etc. as well as the "Internet" search bar in the top right corner.
But instead of the usual linpus desktop icons, there are just black and white horizontal bars, with some coloured dots in the black bars. I can still use the terminal to open firefox, and presumably other programs. It still connects to wifi signals, and the bottom bar looks normal and functional. I am posting this message right now with my netbook, and it doesn't seem to have lost any functionality. I would much rather just click on things most of the time instead of opening terminal for everything.
After being on the computer for awhile, it suddenly stops and goes to the purple screen like one would see when turning the computer on, only slightly distorted. after a few moments it switches to a black screen with a flashing _ but you can't type anything, and then it changes so it's blank, and these white bars start to flash on the screen. I just put 10.04 on my computer about two days ago, it's been doing it since. When I first tried to upgrade from 9.10 I encountered a huge error of some sort so I just put a brand new install onto the computer from CD.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having some issues with my screen resolution. I am not sure if it is a monitor or graphics card issue. I believe I have the ATI x300 card. I am gunning a dell dimension E510. My monitor is a MAG Innovision. The screen resolution keeps changing. I had this same issue with 11.3. Also, the screen looks fuzzy in certain places, especially white areas and bars at the tops and bottoms of pages. By fuzzy, I mean it will be a color that doesn't belong there and it will kind of look like static, in either a line, or a blob, or just the whole box. I recently had to disable all desktop effects because they would make the screen unusable.

I see black color trough half of my display. I can go blindly in upper section without being able to see, and from time to time click the shut down bottom. Do you any of you have idea how to fix it? Ubuntu rocks, I love it, very stable, solid rock.I twill never use anything else.

Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

When installer is loading linux kernel and it goes to 100%, the next thing that I can see is black screen and can just use shut-down button. This situation appears about 90% tries. After 7 reboots I installed Suse successful but the problem appears also now. Just after select Suse in GRUB, the screen print some text about half a second and it goes black. Sometime I can start system normal. I use openSUSE 11.3 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 4gb ram, Geforce 8600M GT graphic card

I installed a video driver and after restarting I got as far as the login screen where I saw that the driver did not work: screen is mostly black with random bars of color. I was only able to restart in recovery mode mode. I tried the fix graphics option, which did not work and also some commands that I've seen posted in other threads. So far, still cannot delete the problematic driver or boot up normally successfully.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi've got a mythbuntu 10.10 box connected to my tv; sometimes i want to use it to watch internet tv. owever, when i try to resize videos to full-screen, sometimes black bars intermittently flash across the entire screen. this does not happen when the video is in a window or on the web page, only when going into full-screen mode. unfortunately, on some of these sites, even the "large" in-page video selection is still too small to be comfortably watched from the couch.
i'd suspect it's something with flash, but a similar thing happens when i'm using skype inside a windows xp on vmware. black bars flashing across when in "full-screen" but just fine when zoomed up inside a window. and i don't think vmware video output is flash-based. so it may be something else entirely.
also, this doesn't happen on all internet video - i've only had it happen on video from nbc.com and nfl.com (i haven't really had the opportunity or reason to try many other sites yet), and it was only a little noticeable from the nfl.com but nearly unwatchable from nbc. yet if i go to videos, i have no trouble getting any of their videos running full-screen.
i have an integrated geforce 8200 graphics, and i'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers version 256. i'm not running 260 since its vdpau capability is questionable, and i need that for mythtv. i have a 64-bit system.
does anyone have any ideas regarding this? the fact that i'm getting consistently good results from videos yet consistently bad ones from the tv networks makes me wonder if it's something i'm even going to be able to fix.
I downloaded some software yesterday from the ubuntu rep. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 10.04 installed in a dual boot system with windows 7 pro on 1 desktops and one laptop. Also dual boot on a desktop with windows xp and Ubuntu 10.04. The two desktops run AMD processors and the laptop uses an Intel processor. On the two desktops after booting the screen will fade to black and white and then back to color. While in the black and white the computer is frozen. This happens using Firefox mainly and other programs. It never happens using my laptop with the intel processor. Does Ubuntu 10.04 have a problem with AMD processors? It does it so much it is hard to do anything with the and desktop computers, but I have never seen it happen on my intel laptop.

Specs:
CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
Mother ASRock P4i45GV R5.0
Chipset Intel 845GV w/ Intel Extreme Graphics (shared memory up to 64 / 256 MB -I don't really get which one-).
Nevertheless, when I start the Pc, Ubuntu loads and, when it's about to load the desktop, the screen turns black with white stripes and "turns itself on and off" (like when it receives no image). I don't really know if this is or not a graphic bug / problem, but it's quite strange, as I've used Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 before in that same Pc.
By the way, I get the same error with the normal Ubuntu Lucid. AND, I have a Win XP Professional SP2 installed (I've installed the Ubuntu afterwards, so I have the Grub as default bootloader).
Also, I get the same error when loading Ubuntu in LiveCD mode.

After suspending my laptop, and then resuming the screen has black and white jagged wide zig zags across the screen. I can move the mouse and login fine, it's just the graphics are all screwed up. Has anyone had this problem before? Is this X? Is it a driver issue, my info is in my sig.

Does anyone know if there this is a HardDrive failure or is it something else that I can try to fix? I have back ups of all critical data so a reinstall is possible but I would like to get some noncritical data out on my XP partition.
I insert my DVD into my machine. The little "waddya wanna do" window then opens, and I select "play in VLC." I then press the play option on the video menu (not the play button on the VLC controls). Then the VLC window turns black, or the part where the video is supposed to appear does, anyway. So double-clicking to get to fullscreen sometimes fixes the problem, but then I can only view it in fullscreen, not good. It didn't fix the problem this time, so I double-clicked again to get out of fullscreen. Then my whole display turns black and white. WTH? The display problem fixes on a reboot.
This happens on a regular basis when I try to play movies. My display is, right now, black and white. After I finish this post I'll restart my computer to fix the colors.Also, it should be helpful that when I move the VLC window or am going to/from fullscreen, I can see the movie for a split second, and in full color. The rest of the screen stays B & W, though.Also, for some reason, when I play a movie, VLC open two windows: one with the video, and the other with a visualization and a title bar saying "VLC (X11 output)"
I have Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu and XP in 2 HDs. I upgraded Studio to 10.04 and XP doesn't start anymore. I upgraded Ubuntu with and error in the GRUB and then just Studio was booting...With $ sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sda2 /mnt $ sudo grub-install --root-irectory=/mnt /dev/sda I recover Ubuntu boot... but not XP...at last I removed completely the GRUB2 in the Ubuntu and Studio synaptcs...Now I have all the same but with GRUB 1.97 Ubuntu starts ok, Studio starts after an error message something like: dev/ no such device. and after choosing xp in the list all that appears is a black screen with an white I will post down the sudo fdisk -l and sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

So i do a drive to drive clone (witn both hd's deing connected to another machine). And it says its done and okay. But the second (cloned) machine doesnt boot. And have the black screen with the blinking white cursor in top left corner. I have already tried to do fdisk /mbr and also copying partition table from original to destination disk. Because i think it is logical that with a drive to drive clone it sould be copied. But i have a doubt in that somehow. Because why would it not boot if it was copied then

the power went off in my house for a split second but it was enough for my computer to die as such linux refuses to boot, i reinstalled ubuntu 3 times now and still nothing.. the only way i can get it to do anything regarding booting is if i have a windows xp install disc in the dvd drive. other than that, bios posts and then i get a pure black screen with a white prompt and it sits there i did however find the boot info script and ran it so here is the results:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOnce I select Ubuntu 9.10 from Grub, it shows the logo, the logo disappears, a jet black screen shows with 2 horizontal white dashes appear at the top.
I recently uninstalled Firefox 3.6 pre using synaptic to go with the stable Firefox 3.6 installed with the PPA repository that was given in the Ubuntu wiki. It installed and ran fine but when I rebooted, ubuntu wouldn't start.
I went into recovery mode a few times, tried to fix any broken packages and when it said it was fixed, I tried rebooting and the same error occurred. I also tried to use dpkg-reconfigure for the xserver-xorg and then ran startx but x didn't load properly. Some more debugging and a few driver errors came up involving intel so I installed a package which fixed that.
Ran the dpkg-reconfigure again and ran startx. This time x loaded but it was a jet black screen and I had to hold ctrl + alt and hit a few F keys to get back to the prompt.
I understand this could be a xulrunner error so I tried reinstalling xulrunner-1.9.1. I also rolled back my repositories to get the Firefox 3.5 branch and I installed the original Firefox 3.5, ran firefox --version to make sure and I finally have that back installed.
I tried rebooting and running the OS normally, but again it failed at the same point. What exactly should I do next? Yes, I could reinstall but it's such a small problem with maybe 1 or 2 broken packages, is there anyway I can save my current ubuntu system (as I have made countless configuration changes months ago and I do not want to do it again)?
i thought i would give ubuntu 10.04 a try. So i downloaded the iso twice from two differant sources and burned to 2 diff dvd with diff burners and get the same problem. When i boot off of the disk i get the menu but whether i choose install are run live cd it just sits there for a sec are 2 then goes to black screen with flashing white bar in upper left hand corner and thats all it does. even tried my 9.10 disc which i know works. but it does the exact same. I have purchased a new video card since i last ran ubuntu and its the nvidia gtx 260 core 216. would that be whats causing my problems?
