Ubuntu :: Login Screen Pops Up But The Resolution Is Messed Up
May 4, 2011After a lot of headache and time I was finally able to get Ubuntu 11.04 64bit installed along side my Windows 7 64bit installation. The whole process was hindered by the screen resolution being really off, looked like this LINK (aspect ratio of (16:10) I believe it was). After much fiddling i was able to get the installation started hoping that in the end it would let me set the res. correctly once it was installed. About 75% of the way done it threw an error saying there was either a problem with the HDD or the CD, I know my HDD is fine, so I booted up windows and set up my USB thumb drive as the installation device, Unbootable.
My next attempt i hooked the laptop to my internet via cable and started the installation again, this time i found that I could set the res of the LiveCD (which was a pain in the neck) and this time Ubuntu installed and upgraded and seemed all sorts of happy! Once the PC rebooted and i selected to boot into Ubuntu, the(what i suppose is) login screen pops up but the resolution is messed up again and this time I can't navigate at all. I've tried just typing in my password and hitting enter as i can see that it is by default selecting my user name to login with.

Jul 15, 2011I've got an HP ThinClient that my computer dumped in the recycling pile. I swapped out the ATA 1-gig flash drive, and replaced it with a 60 gig ATA hard drive. I installed Ubuntu on it through a flash-drive, and everything comes up just fine. When I boot up the computer, I get the ubuntu screen, it comes to the login, I select my username and enter my password. I hear the little jingle music, and then the computers graphics get messed up. I still see the mouse, and it appears as though I'm opening windows, but they come up really as just screwed up boxes that are black or other colors and the graphics get all distorted.
I just figured out how to get into the GRUB menu, and I was able to boot in reduced graphics mode. verything seems to be in 16 colors, but I can actually log in now and see everything! (really cool). Just to give an update, I can log into the computer using rescue mode, and I can do everything on the computer that I want to in 16-color mode or whatever that mode is. As soon as I reboot in the normal mode, the graphics mess up as SOON as I log in.
Ubuntu :: Fedora's Grub Messed Up Login Splash Screen?
Jun 4, 2011I installed Fedora on a separate partition and during the install prompts forgot to uncheck the Grub installation. So, Fedora installed with Grub 1 (imagine that) although I was able to find instructions to upgrade it to Grub 2 (plus it recognized all the OS on the computer). So far so good, I don't have a preference whether Fedora's or Ubuntu's Grub is installed, however the Ubuntu Startup Splash screen is messed up, ie. a simple purple background with "Ubuntu" in system fonts. Is there a way to fix this back to the graceful default splash screen? Can I change back the Grub to be Ubuntu's?

Jun 14, 2010I was in the middle of deleting the Xine movie player, and clicked a box wrong. I lost everything possible on the graphical desktop as well as a log in screen for Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). But I don't want that. I want to get back to the Ubuntu login screen, and the orange colored desktop. Right now -- after I log in -- I only have a terminal to use. And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?

May 27, 2010I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.

Jun 22, 2011I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I'm not sure which veraion of linux I have but it was the latest veraon bfor the recent update. I accidentally hit alt ctrl f11 and my comp went inyo the grub menu. I've tried startx and it does nothing. About half the commands I enter do nothing and the other half r not found or are incorrect. The only vommand thw actualley work is reboot. I searched for this and read a grub guide but it did no good.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen
Apr 12, 2011My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Sep 5, 2010I don't seem to have an "xorg.conf" file.
Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

Jul 27, 2010When installer is loading linux kernel and it goes to 100%, the next thing that I can see is black screen and can just use shut-down button. This situation appears about 90% tries. After 7 reboots I installed Suse successful but the problem appears also now. Just after select Suse in GRUB, the screen print some text about half a second and it goes black. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. Mar 28, 2010I have to hold a presentation using a projector in a few days and I have to bring my own laptop, so I tried hooking up a second monitor to test if it works. As it turns out, the second monitor works fine, but then my main screen is messed up. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and I'm doing this on a HP Pavilion DV4000 laptop. My main screen shows just the bottom (cca) 400 pixels of the wallpaper, no bottom panel, no desktop icons.
