OpenSUSE Install :: Screen Turns Black And Back To Normal After Installation Of 11.4

Mar 26, 2011

I had 11.3 running for quite some time without any problem. The upgrade to 11.4 was ruined for some reason (only got commandprompt login) and the message that Xorg.0.log couldn't be copied. Decided to install 11.4 from scratch, but since the install my screen flashes every 20 seconds or so to black screen and and after 1 second back to normal. There is no interruption of any other task like typing. Card: FeForce FX5200 card. Can someone please point me to a solution? Also, my monitor (Philips 150S) is not recognized. How can I change that without changing xorg.conf by hand?

OpenSUSE Install :: Normal User Cannot Login - Screen Blinks - A Black Page Appears

Jun 27, 2010

I can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get To The Login Screen, But When Hit Enter Eveything Turns Black?

Nov 30, 2010

I'm trying to install the latest version of Ubuntu Studio. I tried it a few months ago with my HP... a live system worked fine, but when I installed it, it would go blank after the splash screen. I assumed it was some sort of incompatible graphics driver and gave up since I don't know enough about Ubuntu yet.Now I have a spare Dell XPS desktop sitting around and I got the latest version of Ubuntu Studio and tried it again. The install goes by erfectly, this time the welcome screen actually comes up and I can see my username. As soon as I hit enter, which I imagine should bring up the password prompt, the entire screen goes black and won't respond to anything.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Screen Turns Off After Auto Reboot

Feb 6, 2011

I have a fresh install of openSuse 11.3 installed. But after the install the auto reboot nothing happens screen turns off, I restart comp grub came up.
OpenSuse (Default)
Failsafe openSuse
Windows 7

I select default the little gecko loading screen comes up then after 15sec screen goes black screen actually goes into idle mode, button pressing mouse moving nothing effects it. I reboot again select failsafe, text screen comes up going through list everything green, then screen turns black doesn't go into standby just black screen. I reboot try default with nomodeset loading runs same as failsafe except when comes to x-server screen goes black.

I have 2 displays a 18" Dell digital lcd Monitor, and my 26" TFT TV, They are both connected to a Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS, TV with HDMI and Monitor with DVI-I. I have a second 18" Dell LCD Monitor, which I had connected with D-Sub but I couldn't get all 3 working so disconnected second monitor, as i wanted tv over monitor. I had ubuntu 10.10 running before the opensuse 11.3 install it worked fine but i wanted to try suse.

I thought it might have been that I was picking KDE desktop then adding Gnome later in installation, so tried reinstalling default install same problem, tried gnome alone same issue, tried gnome and KDE and same issue. so i put original idea back on KDE and gnome later in install. and im sticking with this until I fix as its the one I want. But if I really have to I will switch back to ubuntu. I have no Linux experience.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Screen Turns Black & White After Going Into And Out Of Fullscreen

May 30, 2010

I insert my DVD into my machine. The little "waddya wanna do" window then opens, and I select "play in VLC." I then press the play option on the video menu (not the play button on the VLC controls). Then the VLC window turns black, or the part where the video is supposed to appear does, anyway. So double-clicking to get to fullscreen sometimes fixes the problem, but then I can only view it in fullscreen, not good. It didn't fix the problem this time, so I double-clicked again to get out of fullscreen. Then my whole display turns black and white. WTH? The display problem fixes on a reboot.

This happens on a regular basis when I try to play movies. My display is, right now, black and white. After I finish this post I'll restart my computer to fix the colors. Also, it should be helpful that when I move the VLC window or am going to/from fullscreen, I can see the movie for a split second, and in full color. The rest of the screen stays B & W, though. Also, for some reason, when I play a movie, VLC open two windows: one with the video, and the other with a visualization and a title bar saying "VLC (X11 output)"

OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen After 1/2 Of Installation?

Mar 2, 2010

I have been using OpenSuse at work for years. My Windows 7 machine crashed on me. Instead of spending the time to fix it, I decided to take the plunge and install 11.2 on my home system. I have 4 one TB drives. My RAID card has a 2x2 1/0 RAID array defined (sdb, sdc, sdc, and sde). A fifth hard drive, outside of the arrary, which is a 250GB drive (sda). It is a software RAID. Here are the partitions I set up in the installer.

On the raid:
1.75 TB on /home
2.01 GB on swap
48.55 GB on /tmp
Off of the raid:
sda1 115 GB /
sda2115 GB /boot

(I know these are really big but I did not want to put any data outside of the RAID) In the final Installation Settings screen, I chose Booting and change from booting from the MBR to the /boot partition. The boot loader type is Grub and the status location is at /dev/sda2. I select Install and it installs without any error message.

After it installs, it restarts and I press ESC to see what is happening. It skips boot.cycle and continues to load to "starting HAL daemon ...done" and then the cursed black screen. I cannot SSH into it. It just sits there and I have to do a hard resest. Once I restart it, it boots into the non-RAD drive I get the follwing error message:

GRUB ..(it went to fast for me to get the rest of it)(hd1/1) message: file not found and I get the option the change the boot options of the Desktop -- openSUSE 11.2 and Failsage -- openSUSE 11.2 . I select e to edit the boot section of desktop and see

root (hd1,1)
kernal /vmlinz-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST32508...
intrd /initrd-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop.

I tried changing the root (hd1,1) to 0,1 1,0 2,0, etc with no luck. What do I do? I need to boot into OpenSUSE and finish the cursed installation.

PS: You can tell I work IT with the uber amount of details I put into this

Ubuntu :: Screen Of Old HP Laptop (running Natty) Freezes And Eventually Turns Black

Jul 28, 2011

The screen of my years-old HP laptop (running Natty) freezes and eventually turns black. Ctrl-Alt-F# works to switch to the terminals. My fan is even louder than usual. I spend some time fooling around with ps and kill and shut down some of the most resource-consuming processes, which quiets the fan a bit, but tty7 still shows a black screen except for my mouse pointer.

I finally decide to shut it down altogether, but then I think to myself, "Self, you've used the power switch to shut down before in this situation, but shouldn't there be a more proper way to do it in the terminal?" So I try shutdown, I have trouble with it, it proceeds to get hopelessly tangled up, and it looks like it's frozen up in mid-restart when I throw up my hands and decide to go for the old power-switch-for-five-seconds method after all. Now when I start the computer and select Ubuntu from GRUB, I get this:

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid (monitor Switches To Standby) - Screen Goes Black With A Flashing Cursor Then Changes Back To Purple

May 5, 2010

I cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.

I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.

General :: Automatically Set Screensaver Activation Back At 30 Minutes Each Time The Normal Screen Is Reactivated?

I'm running Fedora 14 and set the screensaver (in System>Preferences on the Gnome GUI) to activate after the computer is idle for 30 minutes. After the screensaver is activated, and a press a key or the mouse, the screen is back to normal -- no problem. After the screensaver has been activated once, however, it comes back on very quickly -- usually in 2 or 3 minutes if the computer is idle. The only way I have found to correct this (and set activation back at 30 minutes again) is to log out and back in again. How can I correct this, and automatically set screensaver activation back at 30 minutes each time the normal screen is reactivated?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Freezes After GRUB (Normal Or Failsafe) Boot Splash Screen

Apr 17, 2011

I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

openSUSE 11.3
Kernel-pae 2.6.38.2-4.1 from Kernel Stable.
GRUB 0.97-174.1 from openSUSE 11.4
Upstart 0.6.5-33.1
xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3-142.1 from X11:xorg 11.3 repo.

The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

When I turn on my PC and try to login (deskop mode) login bar goes from 30% to 50% and then appears a black screen, nothing more, just deep black (cannot type anything etc.) I use GRUB - Windows, opensuse deskop mode and failsafe mode. Failsafe mode works good, but I have no idea what should I do because I didn't change anything. I even done a reinstall of OpenSuse and after one day I've got the same black screen.Someting wrong with grapfic card drivers? (ati 4850, downloaded from ati page, works good for 1 month) maybe some kind of new update which was installed automatically?

Install :: Black Screen After Installing OpenSUSE 11.2 / Fix This?

Apr 7, 2010

I have registered a problem similar to the one reported in this thread: Solution to black screen problem in opensuse11.2 - openSUSE Forums
after installing openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, and rebooting the system a blank screen appears after booting process is completed.

Initially, I was thinking that was 'cause of the installation of ndiswrapper drivers (see command "modprobe ndiswrapper" not working - openSUSE Forums) but after the 4th (!) installation of openSUSE I really don't know what to think...

Sometimes openSuse boots regularly, and sometimes not... seems that there is no difference if I restart the PC or I turn it off and then off. Result is the same: sometimes I get the user desktop and sometimes not...

As explained in my previous post, I have checked the disk but all seems ok.
Now I cannot use the PC even in failsafe mode... I get always a black screen.
But what is more surprising is that I have 2 identical (identical!) PC with the identical hardware, and identical bios configuration. Only the monitor is different. Well, said that, one is working the the other one not...
To be honest, the working PC was an openSUSE 11.1 systems updated to openSUSE 11.2.

I think that must be something wrong on the distributed openSUSE DVD..
