Well I'm trying to set up a US robotics dial up USB Modem. When I enter WVDIALCONFI end up with a screen that says "scanning your serial ports for a modem"It scans and ends up saying Sorry'no modem was detected!Did you configure it properly with SETSERIAL?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Brother MFC-7440N which has Linux drivers, but I can't get useful scans yet. It prints fine, but the only scanning software I've found so far, XSane and a utility just called "Scanner Utility" are both useless.
XSane is no good because it crashes every time I try to scan something.
Scanner Utility has a few problems. Unless I set the paper size to "Legal," it keeps cutting off the bottom few inches of my (US letter-size) document. It's the same, regardless of whether I scan from the auto document feeder, or with the original on the glass. Also the orientation is screwed up. When I select "Portrait," the scan comes out rotated 90 degrees, exactly the opposite of what I'd expect.
I also don't like that there's no way to go back and change the scan settings. If I want to scan another document or at a different resolution, I have to quit Scan Utility and run it again.
Neither utility will scan to a .pdf. XSane gives the option, but like I said, it crashes every time I try to scan something.
Is there a scanning program available for Ubuntu that actually works, & will scan to a .pdf? Brother doesn't supply any scanning software for Linux, just drivers, so I have to find some 3rd-party utility.
Is there an easy scanning program for kubuntu and where do I go to get it? My mom is running it and needs to scan things. She has the all-in-one mentioned in the thread title.

Is there a way to stop Grub from scanning the optical drive for boot media before getting to the boot menu? Or to skip this step? (I have the drive excluded from the BIOS's boot menu but then Grub still checks it anyway)

The Connection manager can find wireless APs, but it won't connect to any of those. Also, aircrack-ng does not find any APs while scanning.After some tinkering and a lot of restarting, I can now connect t wireless networks, although slowly. However, I still can't use it with aircrack-ng.

Has anyone been trying or playing with Banshee and the Mirage plug-in? I set it up to do a media scan, and I'm looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 18hrs now and it's still going.... More importantly, when this is complete, and I add some new music, will the scan just hit the new tracks, or will it go through the whole library again? If you have any experience with this please fill me in if you can.

After initial setup I'd like to use a program other than MythTV.
I have installed Lucid 64bit and everything is working OK except for my printer / scanner.
I have a Canon Pixma MP520 and when I switched it on and plugged it in Lucid identified it and installed the necessary drivers.
I have tried printing and scanning (scanning using Simple Scan and Xsane) but I can't get any more than 600 dpi resolution (my printer / scanner is capable of 4200 resolution).I have tried changing the resolution in the scanning packages but the resolution stays the same.
I have an hp compaq 6720s laptop dualboot vista/ubuntu lucyd.My wireless card is Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02), controlled by wicd 1.7.0 (gnome network manager connects/disconects the net continuously).The problem is, any time I do a scanning with wicd or from command line to see the wifi nets around,my wireless is disconnected, then it connects again because is set to automatic reconnection

I started to think I might need a different driver. I found a driver (sane-fujitsu.5) at mangpages (link), but there are no instructions as to what directory to place it in, what files need to be modified to point to it, etc.
After I put my laptop in suspend mode and I resume it, it doesn't immediately detect the wifi networks. I was wondering two things: 1.) Is there a way to scan my Windows partition for viruses through the Ubuntu live-CD? I don't care much about repairing the partition, I just want to know what happened.
2.) And a few non-linux question: If I back up an infected file to an external hard disk, is it possible to infect another computer by merely connecting the disk to it? 1.Now I tried to install it directly from the iso as described here. It showed an error 'Can't mount the cd-rom' that is it couldn't mount the iso automatically.
2.Creating startup disk on my Seagate external hard disk (NTFS) didn't work out as 'Make startup disk' was greyed out.
3.Then I tried to install the OS from a pen drive. It proceeds fine until it hangs at 45% scanning disks in setting up the partitioner. I have waited for about 15 mins, but nothing happened.

There are 450,000+ sound files at least, and it won't import my music collection while it's doing this. Is there a way to stop this? Disconnecting or hiding the drive isn't an option as my music collection is in a folder on that drive, and there isn't enough space on my local HDD to store it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu as a learning tool. It was going fine until the next day after the install. This happened on two reinstall of ubuntu server 10.4. All was installed was lamp, squid, privoxy, tor, shorewall, and phpmyadmin. I have added 3 websites to the server.
Today, I noticed my internet stopped responding on my other pc which is linked to my server for internet access( privoxy). When I turned on the server, I noticed the screen was purging out random lines. I don't know what they mean, but it was a never ending series of lines filling the whole screen. To stop it, I ctrl+c. Some of these lines read usb, keyboard, mouse, etc. I am guessing the system went hay-wired.
When I reboot the machine, it did it again. This time I don't have the cmd prompt. I didn't know another other way to properly shutdown so I just cold reboot the machine. The next time it booted up, all seems normal like it always have been. My sites, internet is working.
I probably didn't provide enough info to diagnose this behavior. As mentioned before, it happened the first time I installed the server and it is happening again with the same applications installed.

I've been struggling with the problem of scanning an external drive that is used to store the backup from a Windows 7 machine. The Windows 7 machine was infected but the user continued to backup to the external drive. He has since formatted his machine and reinstalled Windows 7, but now he would like restore whatever he can from the backup on the external drive. I've been attempting to scan the external drive for viruses using ClamTK by connecting it to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.04, but it has not worked. There is supposed to be about 10 gigs of backed up data, but I haven't seen any. I don't know why it is not mounted.
