Ubuntu Security :: Scanning External Windows Backup Drive?

I've been struggling with the problem of scanning an external drive that is used to store the backup from a Windows 7 machine. The Windows 7 machine was infected but the user continued to backup to the external drive. He has since formatted his machine and reinstalled Windows 7, but now he would like restore whatever he can from the backup on the external drive. I've been attempting to scan the external drive for viruses using ClamTK by connecting it to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.04, but it has not worked. There is supposed to be about 10 gigs of backed up data, but I haven't seen any. I don't know why it is not mounted.

I've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! but I have literally just starting using Linux (Centos) in the last week or so. I am using a standalone PC that is not networked, and as I will be downloading and generating a lot of data on this machine, I would like to regularly backup onto an external hard driveIdeally I would likethis to happen automatically as there will be other people using the machine.There seem to be many different ways of doing this, and I am getting a bit confused about the best method to use.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04, and i recently purchased an tandberg LTO-4 SAS tape drive. I want to access it and backup data on it. Do I simply just connect plug it into the server,and I should be able to backup/transfer data to the tape drive? Or are there intermediate steps before I can do that. I have installed luckybackup software on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition. But I don't know how to use it to backup files to an external hard drive. The Hard Drive is a 1 TB Seagate. I don't think that the Destination Drop down menu in luckybackup even shows the External HD.

I have a cron backup scheme in which I rsync, then tar, then copy files on my internal hard drives to an external (USB) drive. When it works, it works. But I often get a "Permission Denied" message for all of these tasks. how the external drive is auto-mounted so I edited the etc/fstab so that the owner of the cron job is also the owner of the external drive (I think. Unfortunately, I'm not at that machine right now (it's at work), I can't give the exact fstab line (I will post it as an update to this thread next time I am at the machine).) BUT, I still get times when the cron backup runs fine and other times I get the Permission Denied. This is a shared machine that is dual-booted, so what I *think* is going on is that when the machine is rebooted to Fedora, but nobody logs in, I get a Permission Denied for the cron backup. It seems like on days when someone has logged in as the main user and left without logging out that the cron backup runs fine.

I've picked up an HP Simplesave external drive. It comes with some fancy software that is of no use to me because I don't use Windows. Like many current consumer-targeted backup drives, the backup software is actually contained on the drive itself. I'd like to save the drive's initial state so that I can restore it if I decide to sell it.
The backup box itself is somewhat customized: in addition to the hard drive device, it presents a CDROM-like device on /dev/sr0. I gather that the purpose of this cdrom device is to bootstrap via Windows autoplay the backup application which lives on the disk itself. I wouldn't suppose any guarantees about how it does this, so it seems important to preserve the exact state of the disk.
The drive is formatted with a single 500GB NTFS partition. My initial thought was to use dd to dump the disk (/dev/sdb) itself, but this proved impractical, as the resulting file was not sparse. This seemed to be because the NTFS empty space is not filled with zeroes, but with a repeating series of 16 bytes.
I tried gzipping the output of dd. This reduced to the file to a manageable size — the first 18GB was compressed to 81MB, versus 47MB to tarball the contents of the mounted filesystem — but it was very slow on my admittedly somewhat derelict Pentium M processor. The time to do that first 18GB was about 30 minutes.

I am working from a laptop where all my work is stored on a 80GB drive. I am now also an owner of an external 250GB USB hard drive, formatted with FAT32. I want to keep it FAT32, so that I can offer some of my files to people that run Mac OS or Windows and I don't want to have them install ext3 for windows and what not.I am in need of a strategy which will allow me to keep a mirror of my laptop drive on my new external drive, i.e. no history / versioning required. However, I do care about file permissions. The files don't have to be stored as-is, they can be stored within a large (80GB?) tar file, that is fine - it would be easier for me to coerce people to open a .tar file than to install an ext3 driver for their OS, I suppose. I don't think I can keep file permissions otherwise, can I?
I have previously used a self-written sh script that used rsync to keep an up-to-date copy of my laptop filesystem on a USB flash drive, but in that case I had the flash drive formatted with ext3, so no problem with file permissions there. This time, it's trickier.

I have an account in university on Linux machine with 10TB of free space accessible via SFTP. I would like to backup my Windows 7 x64 laptop to university. Currently I am using rsync+cygwin, but backup is pretty slow (without shadow copy) and I hate console window appearing every day on my screen when I login.
So I am looking for something like Windows Backup but with support for SFTP. Combination of tools will work too.

I have recently bought a new laptop, installed my first linux OS on it (Ubuntu 9.10) and an external hard drive with 500GB on it for backup. For the first few days my external hard drive was working fine, but then eventually it wouldn't let me copy/move/delete stuff to and from it. So I kept trying to change the permissions but it wouldn't let me.
I figured this would be a very very common problem, so I looked up some forums to try out the methods but they didn't work. So I thought I would ask you guys for help because I am pleased with the support. I wouldn't think this would be a hard problem to solve.

I have an external hard drive that has all of my Apple Powerbook G4 files on it. I plugged in my "Journal Extended" external hard drive into my new HP laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 on it.
All of my files are on the hard drive still, however lots of them have a little X on the folders and when I try to open them it tells me I don't have permission? How can I force the permission for everything on my external? It's my own files and I can't even access them lol.

I have an OpenBSD and a FreeBSD system and a mac. I also have a Ubuntu server. What i would like to do is back up all these systems to an external hard-drive using rsync when the external usb disk is connected to my Ubuntu box.If i format the external usb disk with cfdisk and the create a non-bootable ext3 file system on this external disk and create and put all the necessary public keys on the Linux box then from the BSD's or the mac issue the command:

I should store each OS just in a separate disk file of the external usb drive each time right?? Because i would rather not have to format the external usb drive for each different OS. I've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"

i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.

I am building a PC that dual boots Kubuntu and Windows and want to share the email store. Therefore, I would like to have real time or on access scanning of emails in an antivirus program like Windows does. I am not running an email server, just a desktop using pop3 and eventually imap email.
In previous Debian versions ClamAV and Dazuko used to do this. However, I understand that this setup doesn't work in Lucid. I tried p3scan but that hasn't been updated since 2008, once I managed to install it, it failed to find clamd even though it was running. I understand that clamdrib no longer works for Thunderbird 3. Amavisd as a replacement for p3scan, but this seems to be for mail servers.
I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me how to get on access/real time virus scanning of pop3 and imap emails on a desktop running Lucid with either Thunderbird 3 or Kmail, without having to buy an antivirus program like Avast Or point me to an existing tutorial that I might have missed.
As an aside (don't want much do I?) does anyone know if Kmail can be setup to only download the headers like Thunderbird does?

I've been using it for a couple of years, it has been mounted various ways and into various places, for the past year under Suse 11.2
Suddenly I discover that it's not accessible in Windows anymore. Drive gets an assigned letter but can't be opened. Tried on Windows 7 and Windows Xp.
This is the current fstab line:
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Seagate_FreeAgentDesktop_3QK0A0N7-0:0-part1/home/stan/Seagatentfs-3gdefaults,locale=en_US.UTF-800
Drive is owned by the root but permissions are set for everybody.
This is ls -l line for it's mount point

Another weird thing about it is that if I try to copy a folder into it Dolphin gives me "can't create directory" error and then hangs. If I restart Dolpin I see that the folder has been created just fine and I can copy anything into this new folder without any problems, including creating any sub-folders.
That weirdness doesn't exist if I run Dolphin as a superuser.
I would create a separate thread for this issue if there's no connection.
For now I believe something screwed up the part where Windows reads what file system it is.
Is there a way to "unscrew" it and make sure that NTFS looks ok to Windows, too?
Backing up 750 GB drive and reformatting it is not an option in the near future and I occasionally need to take the drive and plug it into friends' Windows.

I'm new to the ubuntu forums as well as ubuntu. I'm excited to learn more about linux itself as well as ubuntu. I got ubuntu 10.04 running on my toshiba L505D laptop by disabling acpi in the boot commands. My first question is how do i do this permanently, is this bad, and would updating fix the issue? If so how would I go about updating.
Secondly, when the external hard drive I installed ubuntu on is not plugged in to the laptop, GRUB rescue comes up. I kind of like this because it provides a level of hardware security. I would however like to know how to load my windows partition encase the external hard drive fails.

I have a Onetouch 4 mini 160GB I bought a year ago. I t used to work fine but all of a sudden it started to become a problem device. My home pc has two operating systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 lucid. the drive often fails to load on both systems. Sometimes it's recognized, but the reads are very slow and opening a folder on the drive takes around 120 seconds. Itried reformatting the whole drive, chicking it with chkdsk but it didn't help. Now I have around 70 GB of data on the drive. On my office pc I don't have such a problem and the drive works fine.
My home pc has an Asus P5B motherboard and intel core 2 duo cpu. I tried unplugging other usb devices, plugging in the extra power cord (data + data/power) and it didn't help. The drive also makes beeping sounds when I try to browes the files on it. I'm sure thid is not OS related as both Windows and Linux have the same issue. the issue i am having has been narrowed down quite a bit through various posts from here and on google. the set up is amarok 2.3.1, kde 4.4.5 and fedora 13. when i am scanning my collection amarok crashes. the music is on a second mounted hard drive with an ntfs formatting. i have copied the same folder to a ext3 formatted second hard drive, my main linux partition (ext4) and its location on my third ntfs drive. from my linux partition and from the ext3 partition the folder is scanned fine but on the ntfs partition it fails to complete and crashes.i tried amarokcollectionscanner stand alone it scanned the entire ntfs partition fine but when scanned from amarok through the rescan collection button, it crashes. it is about 200 gigs of music so i am not really keen on moving the entire collection. i have been working on this for a while and have not figured out a work around or how to fix this

I'm just setting up a partition on a seperate HDD in my system. I plan to use the partition to backup the important files on my main HDD (to guard against HD crash).
The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
1. /backup/
2. /media/backup/
3. /mnt/backup/
4. /home/chris/backup/
