Ubuntu :: Need Scanning Of Incoming Emails & Spam Filter

I want to read my emails locally using Evolution & Thunderbird or some other mail client. I have bought a new domain and would want incoming emails sent to this domain ids to be scanned by a virus scanner & spam filter.I have read that MailScanner + SpamAssasin is a good combination/option. Are there any others for my requirement.I am not a Linux/Ubuntu expert - so a detailed step by step tutorial to set this up is what i am looking for.I am using Ubuntu 10.04 home user.

1.Have installed ubuntu 10.04 on 2 pc's both run xp on 1 pc boot up selects xp the other selects ubuntu as the first choice. Why?
2.How do I uninstall ubuntu, and what effect will it have on xp ( both imported xp documents and settings ).
3.Do I need an antivirus or spam/malware filter?

We operate a small ISP and are currently using a debian distro as our gateway server.Recently we have had an increased number of spam issues with customers (not them sending it directly, rather the customer getting infected with a virus/malware and then their computer becoming a bot).I'd like to set up another gateway of sorts to sit after our authentication gateway but before our backbone to provide spam filtering (and hopefully virus filtering) for any traffic passing through which might be email.I've tried searching for any linux based software which would suit, but I'm coming up empty.
Surely there's something already out there which can perform this task.Finally, just to clarify, I'm not talking about spam filtering for email accounts we host ourselves (this is built into our mail server); I'm talking about spam originating from customers PC's which is passing through our gateway (but not our mail server).

I have a system running at home that uses Getmail to retrieve mail from my ISP's pop server. Dovecot then offers that mail over IMAPs to my desktops running Thunderbird.
The reason I have resorted to using Getmail is because I don't have a static IP (from my ISP) for my server, and thus this server doesn't act as an MX.
I have implemented Spamassassin in my Getmail script as described here.
From further research, I understand that in order to fully utilize Spamassassin 's potential, I have to resort to training it with SA learn.
Currently I still receive spam messages, but 50% of spam is marked as ****SPAM****, and the other half is not marked at all.
My question is this:
1) How do I get getmail to move messages marked as spam by spamassasin to be moved to a JUNK folder within my mailbox automatically?
2) I thought of creating a folder where my users can move messages they deem to be spam, and set up a crontab script to invoke salearn regularly on this folder to get the bayes engine to learn from it. Is this the correct way of doing it?

I followed this How To (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix) in order to add smtp authentication to my Postfix installation used as spam filter for my exhange server, and it'seem all ok; the only thing that I don't understand is where I list all the users (with passwords) that I authorize to send mail through my server...

I use php to send newsletter via sendmail.outgoing emails work as needed.I defined a .forward file to get responses in my regular email account.If I use mailx to send emails from root account to my own account, it gets forwarded as needed.If I try to send from outside the box to news@domain.com the email is not received in the box and the sender does not receive an error message.
I am sure I missed something.How do I enable incoming emails?

I've been looking for a way to filter out emails on my postfix server by GeoIP data. I couldn't find anything that fitted the bill so wrote my own in Python as a postfix policy. Thought I'd post it here to see if it's of any use to anyone else. I've attached a tar of the files as the Python formatting will get mucked up by the forum code. Well I want my sendmail to pipe all users' incoming emails to /dev/null ... I just don't want to accept emails. Every user that exist on the system currently or will be made in future, I want their incoming emails to them to be piped to /dev/null .... I just want those users to be able to send emails.

I'm looking for a smtp solution that will split all incoming emails and send them to two different servers.
On mail server 1 I have test@example.com
Om mail server 2 (different location than mail server 1) I also have test@example.com
MX-record for example.com should point to mail server 3. Of course there will be a mail server 4 that will do the same as mail server 3. Mail server 3 will receive all incoming mails and forward them to both mail server 1 and 2. This will be a simple and cheap but bullet proof redundancy solution. I'm interested in this solution, have already looked into clusters, backup mx, imap-sync and a ton more of solutions but this is the solution we want. ny one who can point me in the right direction? I've been searching for weeks, the solution exist but I can't find out how to set it up. Not all mail should be forwarded this way, only one example.com, not example2.com or example3.com.

Please what will it take me to write a perl full functioning program to filter emails for specific rules? Will that be possible? The actual thing am trying to get is to write a perl program and attach to a mail server so that, when the mails come in, the perl script get call and then the perl program will let another external program that is not on the server run and check or filter the mails.

I have a server with a domain running and im trying to resolve the mail server but i can't see where to start. I use OpenSuse 11.2. Basically, for starting, i want postfix to send incoming emails to a php script or perl. for outgoing emails i guess that i could use php mail function and i will see what else to have. I configured the dns. I do a dig.mydomain.tld MX and i get the following:
mydomain.tld3600INMX0 mail.mydomain.tld
mail.mydomain.tld 3600INAmyNumericalIp
So now my system is receiving MX content but i dont know what to do.

I have recently started working on our server. My knowledge about *nix systems is very limited, so I turn to the oh-so-friendly internet community for help.The server is running Debian Etch, postfix, courier and some other stuff. And suddenly out of the blue the emails from the internet are not being received. Emails being sent internally are being received and everyone can browse the internet.Host or domain name not found. Name service error for na$for name=xxx.xxx.xx.xx.list.dsbl.org type=A: Host not found, try again.Does anyone have any experience with something like this? I would love to get this thing fixed.

I am using CentOS 5.3. I was half way through that and got an email that had ***SPAM*** in the subject. Haven't received any more. First of all I want to know if spam will still get delivered, and just have a modified subject. Second, I want to know how to set it up so Spam goes to a user's spam mailbox (Virtual Users). And third of all, is it possible to disable spam filtering on a user basis, preferably using MySQL tables? Is it possible for users to mark a message as spam, and all further messages sent from that address will be sent to spam folder but only for that user?
EDIT: Yes spam is getting delivered with a modified header, on the server site, how can i deliver to spam folder? how to create IMAP virtual mailboxes on request without having to send an email to them first? Using virtual users with Courier Imap

I currently have the following email server set up:
Postfix with mysql backend
Dovecot
clamav
spamassassin
amavisd
And it all works great. However I would like it for amavisd to forward all the marked spam into a folder on each user account, but I cannot figure this out.

When something comes in that gets sent straight to my junk mail folder, a notification STILL pops up... Also of note, I would like to stop notifications for my RSS feeds... I love my RSS feeds but this is ridiculous.

Well I'm trying to set up a US robotics dial up USB Modem. When I enter WVDIALCONFI end up with a screen that says "scanning your serial ports for a modem"It scans and ends up saying Sorry'no modem was detected!Did you configure it properly with SETSERIAL?

I have a Brother MFC-7440N which has Linux drivers, but I can't get useful scans yet. It prints fine, but the only scanning software I've found so far, XSane and a utility just called "Scanner Utility" are both useless.
XSane is no good because it crashes every time I try to scan something.
Scanner Utility has a few problems. Unless I set the paper size to "Legal," it keeps cutting off the bottom few inches of my (US letter-size) document. It's the same, regardless of whether I scan from the auto document feeder, or with the original on the glass. Also the orientation is screwed up. When I select "Portrait," the scan comes out rotated 90 degrees, exactly the opposite of what I'd expect.
I also don't like that there's no way to go back and change the scan settings. If I want to scan another document or at a different resolution, I have to quit Scan Utility and run it again.
Neither utility will scan to a .pdf. XSane gives the option, but like I said, it crashes every time I try to scan something.
Is there a scanning program available for Ubuntu that actually works, & will scan to a .pdf? Brother doesn't supply any scanning software for Linux, just drivers, so I have to find some 3rd-party utility.

I want to scan in a book and convert it to a pdf AND make an OCR text of it. I am looking for somebody who can help me to gie me some BASH helps to combine the pieces I have already got:
Workflow:
1. scan in the book pages: coverpage (=1), page 3, page 5, page 7 .... n (At this point the book is upside down)
2. scan in the book pages turn the book and scan from the back to the front:

I, as many here, have friends on different IM accounts (and btw, so great that we have pidgin and empathy and not have to deal with 3 different softwares to talk to them) and of all that I have... which are not so many... one of them sends me spam, not all the time, but it happens and I kind of feel sorry for her so I'd like to see if there's a way for her to retake control of her account or if she can't do anything at all with it.
I have other friends in MSN but I get spam only from her and she's given up on how to fix it cause she doesnt know how to. I did a search (and keep looking for more in the web) and so far it doenst look promising (but is also because I dont know what else to do). The problem is I get messages which I know for sure are spam, cause her english is more limited and the messages are very polished in that regard.
I got this from another discussion elsewhere: "troutbot = These bots get your IM from scraping the Internet screenname and connect you randomly to someone else. While you're talking to the troutbot, they're just an intermediary connecting you to some other guy who also had his IM scraped." So far the times I get spam... the other side never answers, but if my friend is online she can. I thought that on these IM services... if you are logged in nobody else can log in with your username/password...

I had setup postfix and spam assassin, and in my environment, I forward the incoming email to my exchange server.
Everything works now, in my mail box, I can receive the email with subject ******SPAM*****. but is there a solution, when spam assassin finished the scan and mark spam, if the score is very high, may be stop to forward it to exchange, for example, send it to a special email box?

I've just bought a GEETEK Hercules USB Wlan adapter, which has the Ralink rt3072 chipset. The Connection manager can find wireless APs, but it won't connect to any of those. Also, aircrack-ng does not find any APs while scanning.After some tinkering and a lot of restarting, I can now connect t wireless networks, although slowly. However, I still can't use it with aircrack-ng.

I'm running 10.04 LTS Desktop and I'm wondering if there any default packages that are automatically scanning for hosts? I'm on a university network and they're really touchy about any computers scanning ports/hosts and they keep disabling my computer. I'm just wondering if there's anything like that installed by default - maybe some of the zeroconf stuff?
