View 2 RepliesI've ditched ubuntu for xubuntu 11.04. I love it. The marvellous grid based desktop...the beautiful theme...the ease of customisation...everything. I switched because I didn't like unity. However, I now have a problem. After installing the proprietary ati drivers for my raedon 5xxx card, compz still does not work at all. A lot of other people have been having problems with extreme lag when dragging windows (my unity-likeing school friend included). I don't have this problem because compiz won't work. The weird thing is that in any other 3d tasks the card performs better than on 10.10. For example I can now play oblivion without the characters lacking faces.

I've tried plugging speakers into the laptop and this works perfectly. I'm rather confused as to why the onboard sound isn't working though.
Here's the output for lspci on my machine:

I have found a few older threads that have asked a similar question, but wonder if updates and new devices have improved the situation:
Is there a PCI (not express) 802.11n adapter that will work with 9.04/Jaunty "out of the box"?
I recently installed Ubuntu Lucid an my Celeron 2.4 Ghz laptop but for some reason I find it slower than Ubuntu Jaunty which is on my Pentium 4 3.00Ghz desktop (especially Gdebi Package Installer. Could this be because of the different processing speeds of the processors, or just Ubuntu 10.04 or because Jaunty has been updated so many times and Lucid is still quite new. It is not just slower, much slower.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to keep my desktop without a net connection as up to date as possible. It currently has jaunty installed, but I'd like to upgrade to lucid via dvd, is it possible without going through karmic as an intermediate? I prefer not to waste my DVDs, I'm even passing my lucid disk around to friends after the install.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had installed Lucid on a clean install on my laptop - three partitions - ext4 home, ext4 lucid and swap.I've been using it for around a week, and find it a bit buggy in places, so I thought I would install jaunty (which proved very reliable in the past). I used the usual installer, and made my /home partition smaller, and created a new ext3 partition for jaunty, assigning the smaller partition to /home.The install proceded without any problems, but on rebooting I just get this:GRUB Loading stage1.5GRUB loading, please wait...Error 18I was hoping that Jaunty would not install grub, but I didn't see any option to prevent this during the installation. I suspect Grub 1.5 has been installed and now it's all messed up

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe PC is a Toshiba laptop model# x205-s9359 running 11.2, KDE 4.3.5. Its video card is an nVidia 8700 GT. For two years now I've been plagued by random flashes, flickers and even missing scan lines on my screen when I use the nVidia drivers (up to and including 195.36.15), so lately I've been using the nv drivers. I miss the effects, etc. but I can live with that. At least I can get my work done, even if the display isn't as fancy as I'd like.
- When I run the nv drivers I can't suspend the PC to RAM or Disk. This means a lot of wasted time waiting for the machine to shut down and reboot every time I leave my desk for any length of time. If I try to suspend to RAM the only thing that happens is that the network connection disconnects then reconnects immediately. Here's the log file....
- If I try to suspend to Disk the PC appears to suspend as expected, but when it resumes it hangs before restarting X, and there's no keyboard or power button response. I have to use alt-prtsc-reisub to reboot. When the reboot is complete the screen shows all the windows, etc that were present before the suspend. Here's that log file....
-When I run the nVidia drivers the suspend/resume functions work perfectly, but I have to put up with all the problems described above. Here's the log file for Suspend to RAM with nVidia, and here's the one for Suspend to Disk.
I've spent hours searching for clues in these forums, on the openSUSE.org site in general, at KDE.org and with Google and I'm sorry to say that most of I've found is horribly out of date, and/or it's way over my head. or (worst of all) not even dated, so I've no idea whether it's current info relevant to my situation or so out of date that I might do real harm if I were to trust it. (RANT: Is it too hard to put a date on an article?... end of RANT) I'd be quite content to use the nv drivers if I could solve the power management issues, but I'd be equally happy to solve the flickering etc. with nVidia drivers.
Been using since summer 2009 the xserver no backfill from PPA: [URL] and it was working fine with my ATI video card. No heavy CPU usage when restoring from minimized and a general performance boost were the results of that use.But recently made an upgrade and realized that xserver-xorg-core package (check it from synaptic manager) has been upgraded to a jaunty-proposed version and the problems started to appear again! So using Synaptic I selected this package and hit CTRL-E key in order to choose the nobackfill version. This way things got back to normal!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on an old Compaq Deskpro with PS/2 ports for the mouse and keyboard. My original mouse is old and has no scroll wheel, so I purchased a new Logitech Optical Mouse with USB. I purchased a PS/2-to-USB converter so that I could plug it in to the PS/2 port. After booting up, the mouse does not work at all. While the computer is on, I can unplug the new mouse and plug in the old one, and the old one will work. But the old one is close to failing, and I need to get a new mouse to work. The configuration file /etc/X11/xorg.conf did not have a mouse configured, so I tried adding the following code to it:

I upgraded fro Jaunty to Karmic and then to Lucid and my TV card has stopped working. I had been informed that this was a result of the splitting of the linux-firmware into two separate packages, but having installed the linux-firmware-nonfree package the problem persists. The card is a Hauppauge WinTV PCI and although it is properly recognised by commands like lsmod, lspci and in the sound card settings, I can't tune in a single channel. It worked out of the box in Jaunty. Is there anything else that needs to be done to get the nonfree firmware working properly?
View 3 Replies View Relatedoriginally my sounds worked completely, but now I only have sound out of the headphone jack. I used all the OEM software originally, but ended up following this step-by-step guide to run all pulse audio. After installing that I noticed that the sound keys on my laptop still showed that they changed the volume, but didn't have any effect in PulseAudio Volume Control... fixed that by changing the keyboard layout. While that bugged me the sound still came out of my speakers and headphone jack, but just recently the speakers randomly stopped working. View 9 Replies View RelatedAbout a year ago, I installed ubuntu on my ThinkPad X61, which was running windows. I basically just overwrote the hard drive, assigning one partition to the install. The graphics have always been a little buggy when it comes to 3d rendering or flash. Flash graphics flicker a lot and 3d rendering leaves trails or doesn't show up at all. Is there a way to configure the graphics card? I'm completely unexperienced when it comes to graphics cards and don't know where to start. I don't even know how to access its settings.

Using Lucid Lynx 10.04. Is your software center/ synaptic package manager working properly for you?
I just got Lucid installed after some minor troubles last night, but with the help of great people, I have it installed now (thank you!) and it all *ok, most* works beautifully!
However, I have been downloading/installing "Ubuntu restricted extras" , for the last 20 minutes now, and it is only at 12% .
In karmic koala, these things happened pretty quickly, but now it is just soooper slooooowww.
Before I started the restricted extras.. I installed VLC player, and that took about 15 minutes just for that. and now it is nowhere to be found!
It does not show in USC under installed software, nor does it show in synaptic..and it is in no menu, anywhere.
Speaking of synaptic...I cant get VLC, or Ubuntu restricted extras to show up, it does not 'find' them when I type their name into the search bar..it acts as if they don't exist.
I havent attempted to find, or install anything else that I had on my karmic box yet...only these 2 things, vlc and restricted extras....and both have been ..well.....painfully slow..... and vlc doesnt even seem to have installed, after it took 15-20 minutes, and said it was finished.
If this was "back to normal"...this would definitely be the best OS i have ever seen/used.
Could anybody confirm that the D-LINK DWA-556 wireless N PCI-E network card works with Lucid Lynx 64 bit? Im looking for a reliable wireless network card that if possible works out of the box on Lucid 64 bit, so far my search has lead me to the above card, If anyone has hands on experience of this card on lucid 64

I've tomcat installed with port forwarding to http(80).
I could able to confiure apache ldap authentication. For this i modified the file '/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-defaults' with the DocumentRoot /var/www.
But for tomcat '/usr/share/tomcat/webapps' I could not able to configure 'server.xml' file perfectly.
I have two hard disks, the one that I work with and another one for backups. The main HD had an OS (Ubuntu) partition, a partition for /home and a lot of free space.I installed latest Mandriva creating a new partition. Everything OK. But it overwrote GRUB and I couldn't boot into Ubuntu, so I reinstalled GRUB from the Ubuntu live CD. I got my Ubuntu back, but then it wouldn't boot into Mandriva. Well, I didn't care. But now the problem comes.
Right now, if I try to install Ubuntu from live CD, the installer won't see the partitions in my main drive. It sees the partitions in the backup drive, but the main drive appears as empty, no Ubuntu, no Mandriva, and no /home. Debian testing installer did just the same. Those partitions are there and I can boot into them and see them; it's only the installer that does not see them.
I tried to install ubuntu 10.04 to a 16 gig thumb drive and the installation went perfectly. However, when I removed the thumb drive and tried to boot the computer back into windows I saw that the installer had installed GRUB on to the hard drive of the computer. Windows runs fine, but it wont start with out the thumb drive that has the ubuntu install on it, this is very bad for me. Is there a way I can remove GRUB with out messing up windows on the computer? i dont have a windows 7 boot disk so this operation would need to be done either in windows (already booted) or ubuntu.
