I have several Windoz machines in a peer-to-peer network and now two SUSE machines, one 11.1 and another 11.2.I have a network printer accessible now to all the machines.My next step is to be able to share files between all the machines and several network drives. I know how to set this up between the Windoz machines, but the only way I can get the SUSE machines to see the network (and be seen) is to shut down their firewalls, and I don't think that's how you are supposed to do it?Can someone point me to what it is that I need to read, or is there a FAQ somewhere to help get me started?
I think that this has something to do with Samba and I installed Samba (client or server? I forget) on the 11.1 and 11.2 seems to have it already built-in, but I don't know how to set it up with the firewalls on the two Linux machines so that it is all seamless (as if anything can be seamless).
I'm using Linux Mint 8 KDE, which is essentially kubuntu karmic.
Been trying to set up bittorrent (tried several different apps), have followed all the usual steps, forwarded ports on both Guarddog and my router, but still no incoming connections. Then tried disabling the firewall in Guarddog - still no incoming connections. Never had any problems configuring my router before so can only think that there must be something else blocking ports in linux other than iptables.Also had same problem just using ufw and gufw
Having finally got Samba shares and printer shares working on my Lucid Lynx server, I've noticed that the throughput from/to those shares is very slow to what I was used to when I had those shares on a W2K server.Having Googled this problem, I noted that there was a known issue with this in Karmic (believe Brian Wu was looking at it). However, I don't see any results in Google as to this being a problem in Lucid.
I know ipv6 can cause a problem in this regard but having issued the command:
lsmod | grep inet6
I know that ipv6 is indeed disabled on my Lucid server. Any further information on whether the error reported in Karmic still applies in Lucid, and can this be addressed in any way?
hooked my computer up to a kvm switch so thatI could use my pc and my xbox 360 on my computer monitor.AT first everything seemed to be working fine. But when I turn off the xbox I can't use my pc. I have a script which runs a few other scripts (in subfolders of the first script) in order to mount some unix/linux shares) Anyway, when I run the file from rc.local and try to pipe the output into a file the file is empty and the shares are not mounted. however when I run the file it mounts everything.... Also, the script doesn't work on my wireless clients...

View 1 Replies View RelatedNetwork card (82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection) is DISABLED upon reboot. Only way to bring it out of disabled mode is to rerun dhclient to obtain a DHCP lease. Upon reboot though, the NIC is back into disabled mode.
A workaround I have found is to uncomment the iface line in /etc/network/interfaces, but considering I have 14 identical PCs to this one, and only this one is currently giving me grief, I am trying to find the root cause
The machine successfully obtains an IP using the PXE boot option in the BIOS - so I can hopefully rule out hardware problems as a cause. Network cable has been replaced, as the location of the machine to a different switch port.

I just got Ubuntu and am new at this stuff. I have a dual boot windows 7 64 bit one and ubuntu 10.4. I booted ubuntu at startup and then tried to go online, but it says my wireless device is disabled. I tried pressing the keys on my keyboard to see if that may work, but it doesn't. I am lost and new at this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working on setting up access for our developer via Telnet, we are on a local network behind a physical firewall. I set up the standard Telnet service for Fedora15 and from localhost I can login via any user and root.... However I cannot login from another terminal on the LAN, even though I can ping and FTP to the fedora15 box. I added the firewall rules for telnet, that did not work, so I disabled the firewall, still cannot get a connection via port 25. I feel either port 25 is closed in another manor or the telnet is restricted to the localhost.
Also I cannot login to root to configure the Firewall Desktop GUI, only standard users, is this an issue? I also cannot login to the console as root even though I use the correct password.I can only su to root and sometimes it is a PITA. There must be some settings to clear these issues up...
I'm running a fresh 10.04 x86-64 on a thinkpad w500, using the default video driver. The monitor shuts off randomly, sometimes while I'm using it and requires me to trigger sleep mode and waking up to bring back the screen. When it shuts off, everything else seems to be running. (i.e. its not going to sleep) I've turned off screensaver, sleep, hibernation and installed the Caffeine util to no avail.

I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).
All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.
The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?
The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.
I installed Lucid several days ago, and have just noticed that SCIM no longer works. I need it for Japanese input, but cannot turn on Anthy. The manual is either nonexistent or extremely terse with a lot of presupposed knowledge.I've installed German, Russian and Spanish language support, along with CJK. View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a few parts laying around and maybe a 100 bucks on NewEgg I can get a Windows Server going. However, I have a few questions. I already have two Ubuntu servers going. My main concern is OS updates. I have Ubuntu based distros covered via apt-cacher-ng on one of my Ubuntu servers. I also have a nice squid server going with adzapper and so on. However, I have a bunch of Windows based machines on my network, and I have very limited bandwidth. I know I can run a virtual server on my main server, but I prefer to have an actual box just for a WSUS server for personal reasons. This is only an option if there is no option for WSUS style updating through Linux on my current server.
If I have to build a low powered Windows Server box in order to just push Windows updates for XP, Vista, and 7 to save bandwidth in the long run will a copy of Windows Home Server do the trick? I read an article from MaximumPC that WHS 2.0 will have a WSUS feature, but is this feature available in WHS 1.0? This is a really crappy way of storing updates and save bandwidth, but I don't know what other options I have. I live and work in a very remote area and I've already done everything I can think of to help save bandwidth. Like having a transparent proxy server and apt-cacher-ng running. It's also helps run things a lot faster when updating Ubuntu based boxes and surfing the internet. If I could just get the Windows updates out of the way I would be golden. I'll wait for WHS 2.0 if I have to. I'm not buying a full blown copy of Windows Server just for updates, especially on a box that'll cost about 300 bucks when complete. Still better than a prebuilt WHS box advertised on NewEgg for 600 bucks.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe administer a small lab of Ubuntu 11.04 machines. Users authenticate via NIS to the fileserver, which then uses NFS to mount their /home directory.
From time to time, seemingly at random, the machines will lock up. After about 15 minutes, they will go back to normal.
Switching the machine to the console with/ Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't help either - credentials get entered, but there's still a 15 minute wait before any commands can be entered. Some error messages show up at this point about processes that were running timing out. However, the root user can log in immediately (which makes us think that this is only affecting NIS accounts).
Logging in with the root account, we can ping our NIS server, and it responds normally. We can restart the networking and NIS daemons but neither of these help.
We checked the NIS error log in /var/yp/ypserv.log and it is empty.
We used to be running a different version of Ubuntu on the client machines (10.04 LTS), but not on the server.
Using Lucid Lynx 10.04. Is your software center/ synaptic package manager working properly for you?
I just got Lucid installed after some minor troubles last night, but with the help of great people, I have it installed now (thank you!) and it all *ok, most* works beautifully!
However, I have been downloading/installing "Ubuntu restricted extras" , for the last 20 minutes now, and it is only at 12% .
In karmic koala, these things happened pretty quickly, but now it is just soooper slooooowww.
Before I started the restricted extras.. I installed VLC player, and that took about 15 minutes just for that. and now it is nowhere to be found!
It does not show in USC under installed software, nor does it show in synaptic..and it is in no menu, anywhere.
Speaking of synaptic...I cant get VLC, or Ubuntu restricted extras to show up, it does not 'find' them when I type their name into the search bar..it acts as if they don't exist.
I havent attempted to find, or install anything else that I had on my karmic box yet...only these 2 things, vlc and restricted extras....and both have been ..well.....painfully slow..... and vlc doesnt even seem to have installed, after it took 15-20 minutes, and said it was finished.
If this was "back to normal"...this would definitely be the best OS i have ever seen/used.
Could anybody confirm that the D-LINK DWA-556 wireless N PCI-E network card works with Lucid Lynx 64 bit? Im looking for a reliable wireless network card that if possible works out of the box on Lucid 64 bit, so far my search has lead me to the above card, If anyone has hands on experience of this card on lucid 64

We would like to run two virtual machines (vserver1 and vserver2); one should connect via eth1, the other via eth2, and the host (mainserver) via eth0. A connection from mainserver to vserver1 or vserver2 is not possible; a ssh connection from mainserver to vserverx ends with a login to mainserver.
I'm the proud owner of a new 1U server, thought dont really know how to handle the next problem. The server runs VMWare ESXi 4.x and currently contains two virtual machines with Ubuntu server 10.04 installed on them. Both the virual machines have 50GB of Harddrive, thought one had another 1TB to use.
One of these virtual machines is going to be a fileserver (and has the 1TB for that reason) while the other machine is purely going to be used as webserver. The system uses one harddiskdrive of 1.5TB (hardware raid 1 configured)
The fileserver will contain images, which should be shown on the webserver. Therefor I need to setup a link between the images directory on the fileserver, so it can be accessed by the webserver. Now this is one and the same harddisk, but the partition is only availeble in the fileserver.
How can i configure this directory, so it can be accessed by the webserver automatically (e.g. that I dont have to remount the directory, after the fileserver has been down for whatever reason)
At first I thought the Delay was normal. After looking around it seems that it's not true. I made a post here. The Problem seems to be related to DNS.
The Server in Question is not Online (as in on the web), all machines are on local ethernet. From What I understand DNS is to mask the IP like a named variable for each IP. I am still figuring out the ins and outs of a linux server. DNS is something I have little or no grasp over. So I need help in setting up the DNS for this scenario case. All guides I have seen seem to be for web servers which is where I stop reading and look for other guides. I have webmin and Bind9 installed on the server.
I am trying to build a file server with RAID 5 over a couple of 1TB HDDs, to serve about 10 client machines using Ubuntu Server. I already own a 22-port switch: HP ProCurve v1810G-24 Switch (J9450A), which I am assuming will do the job. And for the actual server I am thinking of buying: HP ProLiant DL120 1U. Will this hardware suffice, or am I missing something important to get the whole thing running?
