I m facing a problem in installing GNS3 Cisco simulator on Fedora 14. I persistently followed the instructions on the [URl]... website and the readme that came in with the GNS3 source package. The main packages needed before running GNS3 are:
Dynamips
Dynagen
Qemu
Qt 4.5.1 (or higher)
Python 2.5 (or higher)
Sip 4.5 (or higher)
PyQt 4.5 (or higher
Ive compiled and installed all the above packages...it took almost a lifetime, especially for Qt and PyQt. Then, I compiled and installed the GNS3 package and that went well too. But when I run the gns3 executable, I m getting the error message given below:
[root@mnpc GNS3-0.7.2-src]# gns3
Can't import Qt modules, PyQt is probably not installed. I did a double install on PyQt, but the problem still persists.

I haven't been able to get a working X11 environment on a Dell PowerEdge 1850. Using YaST without an X11 environment sucks particularly when you are trying to configure Apache. In addition, the Apache configuration files seem to have changed significantly since the last time I configured Apache on a SuSE Linux distribution. Where can I find good documentation on editing suseconfig files to ensure that I get the modules installed that I need for the collaboration tool that I'm installing?

I am running Fedora11 on a brand new HP Pavilion Elite, and the fans just won't stop running at full speed.
I have tried

Next I did
Code:
Taking the default answer to all questions asked.
Doing
Code:
Gives me something like this:
Which I suppose are normal values, which do not require fans spinning at full power.
However,when I do
Code:
I get this output:

Let's get clear with all bin and sbin folders(from filesystem hierarchy standard):
So the question is: Why there are so many directories and what are the meanings of /usr/sbin, /usr/local/sbin and /usr/local/bin?
Many programs are distributed through archives and we have to build them from source code. Usually they have makefile so it's quite easy. This process involves creating files in usr/local/lib, usr/local/bin... usr/local/whatever without creating specific folders for a given program.
I think it's not right because if we need to remove the program we have to manually delete every of its files if the program's creator didn't take care of it.

I've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

I have been having a problem since I switched to Ubuntu a month or two ago; infrequently, my sound will stop working. It looks like when this happens Ubuntu doesn't even recognize that I have hardware capable of playing sound, even if I just was. It replaces the Audio Output options with "Dummy Output" and has no other options.I have tried doing some research on why this is happening, but all the issues I found were the audio output never recognizing any hardware, not just stopping after a while. I tried some of those fixes anyway, but the problem just came up again today. The only way I know how to reset it is to restart.

Is there a Linux application which can display motherboard and CPU sensor information and which also satisfies one other, absolutely key, requirement: It should be directly usable, after installation, by a reasonably intelligent computer application user. That is, it does NOT require deep internal knowledge of specific hardware or obscure system software customisation. It does not require hours, days or weeks of reading of documentation which is so crafted as to be the antithesis of end-user guides. It must be capable of being invoked easily.
This eliminates all software that the Ubuntu Software Centre lists when performing a search with the term 'sensors', with the exception of xsensors. All other software listed with this search installs without error but is then totally invisible to me - not even listed under 'installed software'. I am aware a key requirement to be a Linux developer is an advanced commitment to play games of 'I bet I can make my software harder to use than yours', but I'm too old for that now. I don't have a need to prove how technically capable I am.
Xsensors installs and tells me where it can be found, but is inadequate as it lists only 2 CPU core temperature readings. It does not give me any indication of motherboard temperature or fan speeds. That's all I want to do - get a simple snapshot of sensor values without having to resort to entering BIOS setup. It's the sort of information that is so easily available using the ASUS-supplied 'asus-probe' software under Windows. Is it possible, given the key requirement previously mentioned?

I've installed Krita in Kubuntu 11.04 and while GIMP works fine with the Wacom tablet (so Xorg is configured properly), Krita responds to the tablet pen as if it was a mouse (so on/off, no pressure sensitivity at all).
I've found old topics about bugs in Qt 4.6 but since we are now using 4.7, I assume those have been fixed?

I have a strange problem regarding the connection to a LAN. I have a asus eeepc 1000H with Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 (dual boot with WinXp). I've discovered two days ago that one of the pins from the ethernet port is pushed inside. This led to the fact that my netbook is not capable to deal with some UTP cables in the sense that it won't connect at the network through this cables. These cables work perfectly for any other computer. This is true for XP - for Ubuntu I found that it is not possible at all to connect through any cable at a LAN. There is an exception to that - my internet connection at home is done through PPPOE and I am able to access the internet through Ubuntu and WinXp.
Asus Romania won't honor the warranty (in their opinion I abused the product and it is my fault - fair enough - it is my fault since I am the single owner of the product - and I am connecting it in various locations to various ethernet cables) and in order to fix it they told me they will need to change the entire motherboard - which I guess it will cost me a price close to the price of the netbook itself - and I don't want to pay that much just for a pushed inside pin. (I wrote these to avoid questions regarding the warranty).I can live with the fact that some of the ethernet/UTP cables won't work with my netbook - but I can't live with the fact that the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to the internet through the ethernet port in any other locations besides my home. I require help in order to establish if there is something wrong with the Ubuntu ethernet settings or the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to internet through the faulty ethernet port (WinXp can).

I'm trying to configure the critical trip points on a bunch of servers so they will shut down automatically if they get too hot. Problem is, acpi doesn't seem to see any of the sensor data and /proc/acpi/thermal_zone is empty. Oddly enough, when I run "sensors," I get info back. Also, i2c and acpi appears to be installed according to modprobe and dpkg.
Here are the relevant outputs:

My laptop is an Acer Travelmate 7530G, it runs an AMC Athlon X2 64 2.1Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM and an ATI Radeon HD3470 Hybrid X2 512MB. In Ubuntu (all versions) the temperature sensor goes up to around 99C and apparently sometimes reaches up to 109C ! The laptop itself gets very hot (as one would imagine), and the fan is on highest constantly. But in windows this problem is not present.

I am facing the issue that the PC not capable to shutdown or reboot; In order to debug that, htop tells me the running processes but all seems normal, I killed few but still cold reset is needed. There is certainly a problem somewhere. the best would be to know which process are weirdly hanging. It could make this testing debian bit better to know which package has these issues.

I need a dev setup which is external to the box I work on at home. I.e. I need to build some form of PC capable of running basic dev tools / scm.Given its very basic needs, was thinking of finding a fanless, probably atom based, micro-itx solution. I.e. small, silent, can just sit somewhere all day with a nightly backup to a NAS. (it would be really cool then as well because I can throw it in a bag and take it places when I need to -- its wrong I get excited about that...).Just wandering if anyone has done anything similar?lightly worried about the performanceWas thinking something like the Shuttle XS35GT:but have a gut feeling I could build something better for 2/3's the price.
Friend suggested buying a simple netbook as its probably one of the cheaper ways to getting an atom powered system, and has a screen for setup. ll it needs to run is a web server, SVN/GIT, Trac, maven, hudson and artifactory. I.e. it does not need to be capable of streaming video content etc (i.e. its not a media box) for 1 user at a time. Projects are not going to be the smallest for home projects, but really in the grand scheme of things its going to be small.

I am trying to setup Slacware 13.1 x86_64 to a encrypted partition. I used the README_CRYPT.TXT howto : [URL] At the step when I create an initrd.gz I get this error: Quote: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp kernel modules tree found for kernel "2.6.33.4-smp"
I tried to look into the directory and there was only modules under 2.6.44.3. So I tried to change the command into: Quote: mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.4 -m ext3 -f ext3 -r cryptroot -C /dev/sda2
This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:
