My laptop is an Acer Travelmate 7530G, it runs an AMC Athlon X2 64 2.1Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM and an ATI Radeon HD3470 Hybrid X2 512MB. In Ubuntu (all versions) the temperature sensor goes up to around 99C and apparently sometimes reaches up to 109C ! The laptop itself gets very hot (as one would imagine), and the fan is on highest constantly. But in windows this problem is not present.
View 7 RepliesIs there a Linux application which can display motherboard and CPU sensor information and which also satisfies one other, absolutely key, requirement: It should be directly usable, after installation, by a reasonably intelligent computer application user. That is, it does NOT require deep internal knowledge of specific hardware or obscure system software customisation. It does not require hours, days or weeks of reading of documentation which is so crafted as to be the antithesis of end-user guides. It must be capable of being invoked easily.
This eliminates all software that the Ubuntu Software Centre lists when performing a search with the term 'sensors', with the exception of xsensors. All other software listed with this search installs without error but is then totally invisible to me - not even listed under 'installed software'. I am aware a key requirement to be a Linux developer is an advanced commitment to play games of 'I bet I can make my software harder to use than yours', but I'm too old for that now. I don't have a need to prove how technically capable I am.
Xsensors installs and tells me where it can be found, but is inadequate as it lists only 2 CPU core temperature readings. It does not give me any indication of motherboard temperature or fan speeds. That's all I want to do - get a simple snapshot of sensor values without having to resort to entering BIOS setup. It's the sort of information that is so easily available using the ASUS-supplied 'asus-probe' software under Windows. Is it possible, given the key requirement previously mentioned?
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an acer aspire 5715Z and now I have overheating problems. Originally Vista was installed on the laptop and no overheating problem was observed. I think fans are not working now, cause I never hear them.

I've looked almost everywhere for increasing the fan speeds, because it never kicks into high gear, just a steady pace for idle use. lm-sensors doesn't show fan speeds, just the temps of the CPU.
As far as this thread goes, I've already got the latest kernel.
Fan is clear of dust, and it runs at an average temperature until the GPU is needed code...
I have a Toshiba Satellite A300D which has a normal, Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit and Vista 64-Bit dual boot. My problem is, on Ubuntu, the laptop overheats and crshes very fast, 5-15 minutes. I have the AMD GPU driver activated, and it is all normal, I havent done any tweaks apart from a GRUB tweak, that only lists 1 Linux Kernal at a time.

In Vista the software Epower controls the fan but in linux I have to install acer_fancontrol and I have installed it as per instructions. It works fine till i reboot and then i get a frozen screen with the BT5 background and in terminal i get 1gear and goes on till 3rdgear without me being able to use BT5.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have blown-out and dusted the interior of the case with a feather brush, reseated the heat-sink with lots of paste, reseated the heatsink with a thin layer of paste, I've disabled speedstep in the BIOS to get the thing to run @ 1.2ghz instead of its' rated 2.0ghz, I've cleaned and lubed the fans with 3-in-1 oil. Yet, It still overheats. It goes like this. I'm running Slack -current BTW.

XFCE4 starts ok...
gkrellm starts ok...
THM shows anywhere from 28 to 44C at this point...
Konsole starts ok...THM kicks up to 48C
Seamonkey starts...THM kicks to 50C
Load a ..... video to give the processor a workout
Within 2 mins THM spikes to 74C and fans start.
THM drops to 50C within a minute or so and then fans stop...
just let the machine sit for a minute...and...lockup
Hard reset
THM shows 66C during boot sequence
this pattern repeats every time I try to use this machine.
I have a web server whos DocumentRoot is:/tmp/wwwNow, /temp/www/fake/ is a directory that contains a series of other files/folders.What I want to do is access the files in /temp/www/fake as if they were in the root directory (/temp/www/)For example:

so "http://127.0.0.1/test.php" would essentially call both directories. Is this possible? Whould I do this through apache or through the actual file system somehow? (Like some sort of symbolic link?) I would love to hear your input.
I have a problem with headphone sound with my Ubuntu 10.04 on laptop Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820 TG. When I insert the headphones, the sound from speakers stop, but there is no sound in the headphones. Manipulating with the alsamixer did not help. Modifying /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf also did not help.

I'm having problems with the screen going black on startup in 10.10. It appears to go completely off (no backlight or anything). If I press ctri+alt+f1 I get a terminal, then I can ctrl+alt+f7 and the desktop appears. I have tried setting the mode to the correct resolution in xorg.conf and I tried using the vesa driver, but it still doesn't work. My graphics card shows as sis 661/741/760

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu on an Acer 5742 laptop and running XP on Oracle Virtual box and plugged in externally (keyboard, mouse etc...) I have lost ability on both the laptop numeric keyboard (only the numeric keys) and the external keyboard when plugged in. This happened while I was working in Virtual box and running Windows XP.
When the laptop is on its own the numeric keyboard doesn't work (only numeric keys) either. I have toyed with the number lock and I have un-installed and re-installed both"keyboard input methods" and "input method switcher" within Ubuntu software centre to with no change. Not that I bought the damn computer for the numeric keyboard but it should work.
I upgraded my wife's old Acer Aspire 1350 laptop to Lucid Lynx, which works fine, except for the fact that the splash screen both when the OS boots and is shut down is completely garbled and unreadable. The screen is also unreadable when accessing a tty via CTRL+ALT+F2 etc. The GNOME desktop resolution is completely unaffected and is perfectly usable. The splash screen works on MY desktop PC, but it does seem to be using some strange video timings, as my monitor recognises it as 640x480 but doesn't seem able to centre the screen properly. I strongly suspect that this is the cause of problem and my wife's laptop display just does not like the video mode. If I plug my wife's laptop into my monitor, it displays OK.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have tried the following techniques to try and boot from CD on my Acer Aspire 5515 laptop: Change SATA information to Native in BIOS. Set the Boot order for the CD/DVD Drive to start first, along with Main driver starting second.

BIOS Version is V1.0 (latest) from Acer.
PhoenixBIOS bios (?).
I have still not been successfully able to boot from CD. No matter if it says to boot from CD/DVD Drive first, it skips on to Main driver and starts Windows. It's not because I didn't burn the .ISO image right, because it worked on my desktop, which is ALSO an Acer, an Acer Aspire T180. What I am trying to do, is install Windows XP Professional, and dual-boot it with my Windows Vista. Only thing is, it WON'T boot from CD.
After upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 internal subwoofer on my Acer Aspire 5930G laptop stopped working.
UPDATE and FIX: Problem was fixed after upgrading to ALSA 1.0.22 using instructions from this topic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046137

I am a Windows user, and have resigned myself to the concept that when things get completely FUBAR you need to just take a deep breath and start over.
Is there a procedure to completely delete and re-install Ubuntu, or should I delete its partition altogether, and re-create and re-install it? I can do that if I really have to.
I have not accumulated enough stuff here that I could not just make a clean start, if that will fix this mess. Somehow I imagined that this would be different from Windows, but maybe it really isn't.
What holds me back is seeing the multitude of people having trouble with wireless in 10.04. Is this a widespread problem that has a good chance of really getting fixed, soon?
At the minimum, It has fallen off the radar screen, although the hotel's system might have gone down, as it often does.
I just got a new acer laptop that came loaded with Win 7, and I want to dual boot with Ubuntu. Naturally the laptop didn't come with a Win 7 disc, but instead has the stupid recovery partition. I've made the recovery DVDs from the eRecovery program but....
From what I read the acer recovery setup is extremely picky and will refuse to work after the partitions have been messed with. Apparently the ALT+F10 to start the recovery process on boot won't even work if acer's MBR is overwritten. What's worse, even the recovery DVDs won't work without the MBR! (At least from what I've been reading... I guess if you install a different HD you are SOL) So how does one get around this? I couldn't care less about acer's stupid recovery partition, but if I ever need to send the computer in for service I think they actually charge extra to restore their crap.
My problem with UBUNTU is that I can not use acer-wmi because I get this ERROR :

It is most likely caused of the missing " Firmware " / Driver for my WLAN Card ( Internal ) . Currently I use Ubuntu 10.10 but I tested 10.04 too before 10.10 and it found my Card but not the Button .

I have not been able to get an internet connection wired or wireless on my laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Acer's website and tried installing them using ndiswrapper. Still no luck.
Am using ACER Aspire 5745G which has switchable graphics. I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal i updated everything after the installation. Now the issue is that when i go to NVIDIA X Server Settings, its giving me an error message:- " You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.
I recently bought a new Acer Aspire and installed Lenny, I can get a wired network/internet connection however not a wireless connection. I use wicd. Bluetooth doesn't work either though I suspect that it might be the same issue.
Don't know if it helps however when I tpye iwconfig I get:
