Im trying to use the mathematical input with maxima in Texmacs (Lubuntu 10.10), but this part of the plugin seems to not work properly. Maxima works very good without that option, but if i "press it" only appears a question mark (?)

I tried to find out but I failed.
Recently i installed: maxima-5.17.0-1.2.x86_64 wxMaxima-11.04.0-16.1.x86_64. After wxMaxima start, I can see on status bar(bottom right)
"Maxima process terminated" when I try manually restart maxima, menu: Maxima->Restart Maxima I see "Maxima started, waiting for connection..." and waiting waiting and nothing happens. but Maxima called from command line works fine. what could be wrong ?
- connection port (default 4010)
- locallhost entry in /etc/hosts (I have one)
- firewall (standard suse setting without any extra settings) I tryed temporarily switch off
Is it possible to make maxima show all steps when doing algebraic stuff such as integration, taking derivatives, finding intercepts, etc?

The problem: backlight is in maximum state and I can not change it.
There are a tons of advices like this:
1 - Open terminal (as a superuser) and type: gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
2 - In the text file that opens, find the line which says GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" and, inbetween the "", insert the words "acpi_backlight=vendor" (the line will be as follows: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor"), save and close the file.
3 - Back again in the terminal session, type: sudo update-grub
4 - Reboot.
It does not work...
I am an engineer. What distribution has the best support for mathematical and 3D modeling software? I also do some photo editing so it would be great if the distro also had support for that.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been wondering about this for a long time but never thought to ask: I do a lot of scientific work so there are many times it would be really handy to be able to type mathematical symbols or Greek letters which, for the most part, aren't part of the ASCII character set. Like "∞ ρ σ τ ω ∑ ... √ ∫ ≤ ≥ " and so on. Is there a keyboard layout (for Linux) that maps simple key combinations to these kinds of characters? (Assuming all the encoding and font issues are worked out properly) I know I could create one myself but it'd be a lot easier if someone's already done the work, or at least if there's a partial solution I could modify.

I'we mounted all my NTFS in /mnt but it doesn't works to refer only to the folder where the partitions are mounted and you have to refer to them individually, so i cant display them as a whole. Also if anybody knows if conky supports mathematical functions or if he knows a tutorial about that it would be great 'cause if so I could make it caluclate the free and used space that should be displayed regarding those NTFS partitions of mine.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:

it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do

arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?

I installed Lucid. I used to have Ubuntu 9.10 and to connect my iPod to my laptop's speakers. There was an option in 9.10 in the Sound Options to change the Mic Input into a Line Input. But now unfortunately I can't find it in Lucid have only 2 audio ports in the laptop: Headphone port, Mic port.

The above code does not work, as I think it would take the whole first and second fields as the input for one particular instance of the program 'inputbashangle'. What I want is to get the first two numbers from the first line of the file 'outfailtest', execute 'inputbashangle' with them, then move on to the first two numbers of the second line for all the lines of 'outfailtest'.
What does this command mean? Is this some sort of a pipe where output of one program goes to input of another?

I built a new pc with an intel atom processor and 1Gb Ddr2 ram with on board sound and graphics. When i try to intal or boot live (from flash drive) The screen pops up asking boot or instal. Whether i choose either/or i recieve an error on my monitor saying input not supported. I've never tried getting my mic to work in linux up until now. For some reason I can't get any sound to come through on the input. I don't really mess with my sound settings so my knowledge is pretty limited in this area. I have a Creative Audigy 2 card and it seems to be using PulseAudio. alsamixer, aplay etc. all seem to NOT be installed. I can edit volume one of two ways. The gnome sound prefrecnes or using pacmd. I'm kind of at a loss here and my searches haven't turned up anything useful as they refer to alsamixer etc.

The sound preferences dialog offers multiple device settings to configure, with most offering 3 mic inputs. I've maximized all of them, and yet still no change. I have to make lots of Skype calls every day. This is a Dell xps m1530 laptop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a pc here, that after it has been running for some time (5 - 10min) stops reacting to mouse input.You can still move the mouse around, but nothing happens when clicking, the exception being that I can still put the cursor into the gnome shell. The keyboard still works. If I restart the gnome session, everything is fine again for a few minutes, before the problem starts again. The pc has a Nvidia 8800gtx pro card. I know that there were some issues with this cards and Lucid Linx, but I didnt find anything helpful on this particular problem. I did reinstall the proprietary drivers, but the problem persists.Something else that might be worth mentioning: At some startups there is a message displayed:"Gave up waiting for root device..." There is more, but I forgot to write it down last time it happened.

I'm having an issue with the keyboard in ubuntu. I'm running 10.04 on my laptop. I must hold any key down for about 1.5 seconds for it to be input. It's like sticky keys.
