I am trying to use compiz on OpenSUSE KDE. I launch CCSM, enable some plugins, close it, start it again and all of them are disabled again. I have the compiz package installed.

In the System Monitor under ThinkPad it says that my fan is disabled.
I will check back later today to see as I do not want to risk overheating my computer right now.
This is probably already on these forums, but I recently re-installed suse 11.3 and had the desktop effects working fine with the desktop cube animation and everything. But not the case this time...I resume compositing, and try my desktop effect shortcuts, but nothing happens and it comes up saying for me to press Alt+Shift+F12 to resume the compositing again. I do that, but still nothing, and I even re-apply the desktopct settings completely and restart the computer and it comes up saying that none of them were activated or something in the notifications pop-up on the bottom right of the screen. I thought I downloaded the right files (OpenGL??) from the repositories along with basically anything I thought would make it work.

Now I don't know why but my network is not working, i.e. when I click on "Network Manager", it reads, "Network Manager disabled". So is there any way to overcome from this problem? I also tried to restart the network service but, it did not worked.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was having some trouble with dual display on my laptop, so I loaded the system using the nv graphics driver. I got some message from gnome3 saying that my display configuration wasn't supported, and then it fell back to something that looks similar to gnome2. I switched back to the nouveau driver, but gnome3 didn't come back. Does anybody know how to switch it back?
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently I noted that when transferring files between my HDs the CPU usage increases up to 80~ 100%. After the transfer ends, the cpu goes back to normal. The system monitor reports no process consuming those cycles, yet there is something eating up The CPU.
Doing some research I concluded it was probably something related to DMA and UDMA. which is weird because all my drives report they have UDMA6 enabled in the BIOS, and in windows I don't have that problem.
Running hdparm -d gives me the following error: /dev/sda3: HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device for every partition on every device, though this does not actually tell if DMA is on or off I suspect it is off. I checked if this was a suse exclusive problem, and to my surprise, debian and aptosid, behave exactly the same. The only reason I didnt note before is cause I had never transfered so many files before, (about 250GB) and the small transfers I did were over quite quick.
I'd like to make emphasis on:
1.The problem is the same regardless if I transfer 5GB or 150.
2. In windows my cpu does not go above 10% at any time during the transfer.
I have 3 sata HDs. All my OS's are in sda (120GB) I use sdb (250GB) and sdc (500GB) as data and media storage. ALl drives are Western Digital with less than 2 years of usage, and pass all smart tests with flying colors.

I am quite experienced in installing openSUSE. (I used it for many years.) But the problem showed below tricks me out.
I just tried to install openSUSE 11.2. In initmode 3 the keyboard works well. Everything worked well up to the moment I started runlevel 5. In XWindows Modus, the keyboard and the mouse are disabled. And I cannot get back to any other Virtual console.
When I started sax2, I get something (in the file /var/log/Sax.log) or both mouse and keyboard like this:
It indicates , mouse and keyboard are disabled.
Here are my questions:
How can I ENABLE my keyboard and my mouse?
Where is the file that configures sax2?
Do I have to set ("on") the AutoAddDevices? or to "off"
Just bought new laptop i7 with broadcom wireless, intalled opensuse 11.3 x64. I had major trouble to make it work... Even compiled kernel 2.6.37-rc6, but didnt go.Then I took drivers and firmware from git repositories, compiled, did what it was necessary and I made it work.This morning, (since system was new), I just did zypper upgrade (nothing new installed from default installation, I just added packman to repos).And, now wireless is not working. In network manager, option "enable wireless" is disabled.I went to YaST, put network on ifup, it did scan networks, but cant make it work either. Turned it back to network manager, but same thing.Module brcm80211 is loaded, but I cannot make wireless work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed OpenSUSE 11.3 with disabled WLAN (otherwise the installation process didn't start). Now the system boots only in Safe Mode with enabled WLAN card (when the WLAN card is disabled it also boots in normal mode though). But even if I try to configure the WLAN card in Safe Mode, the system doesn't boot next time (in Safe Mode) until I add "brokenmodules=ssb" parameter. As I understand after reading this forum I should install a firmware/driver, but there is no install_bcm43xx_firmware script in /usr/sbin directory.

The video acceleration is clearly not enabled since I can practically watch each pixel drawn. (Well, a bit hyperbolic, but really slow.) Another system, same hardware, had this slow video problem and at one point required a complete OS re-installation. The slow video refresh went away. So there is some way to configure the graphics+display to enable acceleration at install time.
Have Opensuse disabled support for Iomega external parport zip drives? I can mount the zip drive under Debian Lenny running the 2.6.26 kernel without any problems. Under Opensuse 10.3 (installed) and Opensuse 11.2 (liveCD) I can't access the drive. Opensuse doesn't recognize it.
All of which is odd. When I installed 10.3, the zip was seen an configured in fstab as /dev/sdc4 mounted at /media/zip. It worked fine for a while, then quit. Now, /dev/sdc4 doesn't exist. Kde control center says (hardware - partitions) says is there but not mounted. Hwinfo doesn't show it; modprobe imm does nothing.
I'm at a loss for ways and means to get Opensuse to recognize my zip drive.
I'm running SUSE 11.3 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 with a Broadcom BCM4311. I finally got the wireless working earlier with some help from caf4926 and now the card keeps disappearing almost like someone went into the BIOS and disabled it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just switched to opensuse from fedora. So far, I like it a lot (KDE FTW). However, I am having a couple issues concerning hibernation and restarting.Whenever I merely close my computer but don't shut it off, I am forced to reboot. When I open the computer after closing it, everything stays black and nothing seems to work aside from a restart (no good, I know).When I restart, network management is disabled and thus I am prevented from accessing wireless. The only solution I have found is to hibernate, which for some reason fixes the problem. A restart however does nothing. So I guess I have two questions:1) Why can't I close my computer without turning it off?2) Is there a more permanent solution aside from merely hibernating after a crash that will fix network manager
View 7 Replies View Relatedever since i updated to firefox 3.6.3 on my opensuse 11.0, it has been crashing instantly on loading videos and gmail.
i have done all of the obvious things. run in safe mode, uninstalled and reinstalled including deleting the entire profile, reinstalling the flash player and adobe reader plugins, disabling all extensions (in fact, i have no extensions installed at all now) - nothing works!
i have put a request in to the mozilla forums, but nobody has an answer.
i am able to get firefox to load the videos page only when in safe mode and with the shockwave flash plugin disabled. it still crashes instantly on gmail.
when i go into the yast installer to look for older firefox versions that i might downgrade to, the versions list is in such tiny type that it is unreadable. every other font is fine except that one versions list! it's driving me mad that the one thing i need to see in order to get a working firefox is invisible to me due to some obscure bug.
To all those who hit this after installing 11.3: Enable the tapping function of your touch pad by adding Option "TapButton1" "1" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf. then restart X (relogin). It will work with all WMs for which SuSE didn't bother to add a GUI config function/utility (xfce, WMaker, twm/fvwm, etc).
To SuSE: WHY? Why is this disabled by default? Why has a system/HW function to be enabled at WM level?? Why only KDE/Gnome?

Getting back my OpenSuse OS/partition.
Background: I had a dual boot system, Win XP followed by OpenSuse 11.1 install. I tweaked it a lot to get my wireless card and Nividia card working. Finally got it to a stage where it was working great.
What happened: For some reasons windows XP had some issues and I had to reinstall the OS. Since I have the openSuse install DVD lying around I took the bold step of reinstalling windows knowing that it will blow away the Grub from MBR. However, during the windows setup, the setup said something about setting the Linux partition as inactive (I think so). Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact message.
After finishing the XP install, I booted in with the XP Cd and tried the repair option to repair the MBR. That really messed up the MBR. So much so that booting back with XP boot CD and running fixmbr didn't work. Finally reinstalled windows again.
Now I am not sure what should I do next.
I tried using the superGrubDisk but it gives the following error: Error 15 File not found.
I did a fresh install of OpenSuSE 11.3 KDE 64-bit on my new laptop. Worked like a charm. But I brought it with me to work without connecting it to a wi-fi and now the network manager doesn't want to start when I'm back in range of my home connection. Also, whenever I try to launch KNetworkManager, it won't load up a window and I still can't connect. This is even disabling the Ethernet port also.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently started using OpenSuSE, coming from a year on Kubuntu as my introduction to Linux operating systems. I had tried out Compiz and liked it, though I used KWin more often than not, and I thought I'd give it a try. However, when I went into YaST to get it, I noticed that it wants to install gnome-desktop and some GNOME programs along with it...I had at one pointed tried Ubuntu Studio alongside my Kubuntu desktop, and I regretted it immediately because ever since I had done that a bunch of things got screwed up in KDE. So I'm a little leery about installing GNOME just to get Compiz working...
Is there a way to use Compiz without the gnome-desktop? Shouldn't it just need GNOME libraries to work? Is installing gnome-desktop along with Compiz going to screw things up and add a bunch of GNOME programs I don't want or need (ex. Nautilus) alongside KDE? If so, I won't bother getting it, so I thought I'd ask, because I don't want to screw things up like I did on Kubuntu.

I have opensuse 11.2 64 bit with the latest Nvidia drivers on a Gnome desktop; out of the box compiz 7.8 worked great. I had no intention of upgrading but I did with the upgrade to 8.4. Everything upgraded fine except I lost my menu bars on all screens when they were opened. I downgraded back down to 7.8 and still the same issue. Right now I have no compiz on so I can have have my menu bars. There is something I must be missing when I installed or reinstalled or upgraded compiz. I would like to get an original compiz setup that a fresh install gives.

Now I'm downgrading to 0.8.4.. Question is, do really I need to upgrade, because I read that theres no new features only bugs fix and speed improvement.
After having some problems with the latest Ubuntu release, I decided to give openSUSE another chance. This time I managed to get flawlessly working everything I needed, and I'm very satisfied with this distro so far.
That said, I encountered a weird glitch in Compiz, specifically with its 3D Windows plugin. It's not really a big deal, but it bugs me, so I might as well give it a shot and ask about it here. With the 3D Windows activated, this is what I get:
what causes this and how can I fix it? I'm using the latest NVIDIA propietary drivers. If you need me to post any additional info, I'll be happy to comply.

I hoped old oversimplistic gnome with disgusting theme, but it was great and fast. Then I had run compiz. I want compiz only on the gnome, on KDE I want Kwin. I could override compiz with
