Jun 5, 2010
I'm upgrade my Compiz to 0.8.6.. but it turn run extremely slow on my system (11.2 Gnome)and Intel GPU. Got it from here: Index of /repositories/X11:/Compiz/openSUSE_11.2
Now I'm downgrading to 0.8.4.. Question is, do really I need to upgrade, because I read that theres no new features only bugs fix and speed improvement.

So I've been testing Gnome Do and I now want to activate docky. To do that I have to activate the desktop effects, so I installed drivers for my graphics card which work fine. But I have an infamous issue with my compiz which causes all title bars of windows to disappear. Is there a solution in which I can activate docky and still have my title bars?

After installing opensuse 11.4 (64bit- gnome 2), enabling compiz effects makes windows' decorations disappear.
I can solve this by doing
gtk-window-manager --replace
but I have to do this every log in.

The last 1 weeks or 2, moving around in the gnome panel has slowed a lot. What was a 1 second delay switching from workspace 1 to workspace 2 now takes 30 seconds. Inside the applications like gnome terminal processing is fast, Thunderbird and Firefox do seem to have slowed but Kate, Kaffeine work fine. Dragging and dropping into workspaces takes 15-30seconds but by using the drop down box the speed is normal. This machine is running OpenSuse 11.2, Gnome Desktop 2.28.2, Amd 64 3000+, 2Gb RAM,

I am dual booting natty and linux mint debian edition. I have noticed in LMDE compiz is far, far, far, far smoother. In natty scrolling, resizing, and animations are all noticeably laggier. In LMDE I can use the normal resize with no problem, in natty its so laggy I need to use rectangle or stretch. Animations are also glitchy (fade animations have white flicker) In lmde there are no visual hiccups.
I am using the same driver and kernel in LMDE, the major difference is LMDE has a much older compiz (0.8.4, before the compiz++ rewrite I believe.) Does anyone know why the newer compiz in natty is so much slower? Does anyone else expereince this? my video card is an hd2600 using the cat 11.4 driver, but I experience these same issues with the oss driver.

I have recently done a clean install of Lucid Lynx and set everything up the way I had it in Jaunty (skipped Karmic). However, I am now having problems with the Compiz Cube and Firefox 3.6.
Whenever I rotate my workspace that contains a Firefox window that is active, the animation is very jerky and slow. It is fine if Firefox is a background window. This was never a problem in Jaunty with Firefox 3.0.
Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how I might be able to fix it? I have tried disabling all addons in Firefox.
My PC: Core 2 Duo E7400, Geforce 7010 (onboard), 2GB RAM
UPDATE: starting Firefox in Safe Mode seems to help a little. Not sure why though...

Slightly concerned as 10.04 is still suffering from the slow window restore, same as 9.10. Are we going to be looking at running another patched xserver-no-backfill (xorg-server) package, which was well out of date on 9.10? [URL]

When Lucid released, I upgrade the Karmic in my Thinkpad R61 using
Code:
One things that remains until today is that when I'm using latest kernel (right now 2.6.32-24), the compiz run very slow, make the whole desktop unusable. When compiz is killed and using metacity, the desktop is running in normal speed.
Fortunately I still had the Karmic kernel (2.6.31-20) and booting using this kernel, everything run normally.
I just wonder what cause the latest kernel make compiz become slow. Is there any leftover application that I had to uninstall (maybe it's like pulseaudio's problem above), or any missing library/application that I need to install?

When I activate Compiz through the Desktop Effects settings, the top one or two pixels of the top Gnome panel don't respond to mouse clicks. Is this a bug, or do I have to adjust some CompizConfig setting?

Well, I initially had quite a lot of trouble getting Compiz to work, but I finally got it to go. I had to use these start-up parameters in order to get it to work:
Code:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace --sm-disable ccp &
emerald --replace
How in the world do I get Compiz to start up like this on boot up, so I can use it easily?

it happened first after upgrading about a week (|| more) ago. i thought that it's just em.. kinda normal (i'm running debian unstable, so such things are happening often).
but now it became a problem: i've tried reinstalling nvidia's drivers and compiz itself. no effect. also, i can't catch any errors in logs.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with Compiz enabled (Visual Effects = Normal, in the System-Preferences-Appearance)
The gnome-terminals are transparent. I would like to disable the transparency, because I have a lot of terminals open at the same time and I don't want to be able to see one below another one.
In the gnome-terminal preferences, Background is set to "solid colour". However, Compiz seems to be over-riding this somehow.
I have the CompizConfig Settings Manager installed. I have looked through it but I can't find an option which disables the transparency for terminals. I tried the Opacity, Brightness and Saturation plugin, but it only allows you to vary the transparency level, not disable it entirely, and there doesn't seem to be a way of setting a default.
I like Compiz very much, so I don't want to disable the desktop effects. Does anyone know how to just disable the gnome-terminal transparency?
I'm not using lubuntu. Somehow I selected that and I can't get rid of it now. I'm on Ubuntu with Gnome.

I've played around with both Unity and Gnome 3 and I love them both. I've decided for now I'm using Unity on my laptop but I was thinking I'll use Gnome 3 on my desktop for particular reasons (I may switch to Unity if I find I'd like it better). My question is, if I install Gnome 3 via the ppa, wouldn't compiz no longer be supported with Gnome 3? Matter of fact I probably wouldn't use anything from compiz even if it could. Hence would it be safe to remove unity and all of compiz or do things in Ubuntu still depend on them? I also wouldn't want them still running in the background or anything. Perhaps now that Ubuntu decided to go the Unity way, that they should support a Gnome-shell build? Like Kubuntu/Xubuntu, even though regular Ubuntu still uses Gnome.

Due to the fact that there is not Official or PPA available for the new stable Compiz 0.8.8 announced on 30th March 2011 [URl]... here is a guide to compile it from the sources. This guide works for Gnome env only; I wasn't able to compile the KDE part This procedure has been tested on Ubuntu Lucid and Maverick.
Create a backup of your active compiz settings:
Code:
cp -a $HOME/.config/compiz $HOME/.config/compiz.bak
Install the dependencies (Lucid):
Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential libxcomposite-dev libpng12-dev libsm-dev libxrandr-dev libxdamage-dev libxinerama-dev libstartup-notification0-dev libgconf2-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libglu1-mesa-dev libmetacity-dev librsvg2-dev libdbus-1-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev libgnome-desktop-dev libgnome-window-settings-dev gitweb curl autoconf automake automake1.9 libtool intltool libxslt1-dev xsltproc libwnck-dev python-dev python-pyrex libprotobuf-dev libprotobuf5 protobuf-compiler python-sexy wget libfuse-dev

During a routine update of my desktop (ubuntu 10.04), the update is hanging at "unpacking replacement compiz-gnome". I was wondering if it is safe to kill the update, and, if not, what else I could do. This has been hanging there for about 2hrs now, so its not just taking its time.

I ran the compiz --replace command and I was playing about with Compiz. I wanted to active that rotating desktop cube. The screen froze when I activated it and I ended up doing a hard reboot by pressing and holding the power button.
Now, when I log in, the gnome bar at the top has gone, the window 'decorations' have gone (no minimize, etc) and the new gnome launcher on the left of the screen has gone
Any advice on how to get thing back to the way they were?

How to get compiz to auto-start. What seems to be the generally accepted method (from what a few google searches and the debian wiki tell me) of using gconf-editor and changing the window manager from 'gnome-wm' to 'compiz' in desktop > gnome > session > required_components doesn't change anything. The only method I found that did not involve using a terminal and running 'compiz --replace' every time I boot the computer was to add compiz and fusion-icon to the gnome startup apps, but this causes unwanted flickering (it starts metacity and then replaces it with compiz, ie it's simply automating what I would do with the terminal). Autostarting the fusion-icon alone does not start compiz, although it allows me to start it from it's menu if I right click the icon. Note that I sometimes use fluxbox as well, so starting it on boot isn't really an option either.
Perhaps this can be useful :
compiz:
Installed: 0.8.4-4
Candidate: 0.8.4-4
gnome-session:
Installed: 2.30.2-3
Candidate: 2.30.2-3

I got the nVidia driver and Compiz installed. Everything's running fine . But then I tried crtl+alt+F1 - which worked though the font was way too big - and then crtl+alt+F7 to get back to the Desktop but it went to a black screen and blinking cursor instead. I searched a bit and it seems this was a problem a few years back but nothing recent. FWIW, I don't have this problem with Hardy/nVidia/Compiz on another drive in this same machine. Is there a way to fix this?

Running 10.10 with compiz and gnome
The whole screen goes dim for any of the below examples. running "compiz --replace" fixes it until any of the below happens again. When the screen is dim, a new window opened (ex: firefox new window or a new gnome terminal) is full brightness while the rest of the screen stays dim.
Following causes the screen to go dim: In the screen saver - hit the delete key to backspace when the password field is empty. in firefox - ^f to find on a page - start typing and as soon as the find field has text that does not exist anywhere on the page "Phrase not found" the screen dims. in gnome terminal - the profile has the terminal bell checkbox ON - hit backspace on a bash input line with no text on it.

gnome-shell seems to go into loco mode sometimes on my computer... among other problems I'm having this one is the worst. So far, it *seems* to happen after a flash movie is loaded in firefox, although I can't tell for sure if that's the case... Flash performance for some reason is crap anyways on here, I don't know if maybe I need a different version of flash? Anyways, if you guys have any clues as to wth is going on, that would be awesome! I'm a bit of a newbie so treat me nicely
Just a quick update - reloading with r seems to fix the CPU usage issue... until it happens again...
