OpenSUSE :: Kde Turn Off Compiz For All Time?

Dec 9, 2010

I had installed SUSE KDE and then installed Gnome too. I had chosen Suse as distro that has incredible KDE performance, however Gnome is great too. I hoped old oversimplistic gnome with disgusting theme, but it was great and fast. Then I had run compiz. I want compiz only on the gnome, on KDE I want Kwin. I could override compiz with

Code:
kwin --replace

, but this temporary solution. Where I can to put this on session startup, or choose kwin on KDE permanently with some kind of preferences

Ubuntu :: Turn Off Window Effects But Keep Compiz?

Jun 17, 2010

I was hoping someone could tell me how to turn off the basic windows effects in compiz but keep it turned on so I can use something like Docky.

The reason is because nautilus takes a few painful seconds to open up with the effects turned on and some times I end up clicking a folder etc a second time thinking it hasn't opened.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Disables Itself - How To Turn Off This Setting

Nov 1, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with nVidia 8600M graphics card. I'm running 10.10 Maverick, and I've set up CompizConfig settings manager. Everything works just dandy, but it will sometimes disable all settings. Restarting X fixes everything, but I can't figure out why it disables in the first place. When disabled, all the visual effects are disabled (wiggly windows, transparency, desktop cube, etc.) The settings in System>Preferences>appearance>Visual Effects is set to Extra, and all my CompizConfig settings are the same. I haven't figured out any way to get it working again except by restarting X.

So far, the only times it has disabled like that are when I've set the computer to "suspend" or "hibernate", and a couple times when it has gone to screensaver while running on battery. It never does it while plugged in (but plugging it in will not restore the graphic effects) I have no idea how to keep the graphic effects working. Perhaps it's related to me unplugging my computer and running on battery? If so, is there any way to turn off this setting?

Fedora :: Can't Run Compiz And Xinerama At The Same Time

May 19, 2011

here's what I want:

Fedora 14
Radeon 5830
2 monitors(one 1920x1080, one 1920x1200) -- shared screen
Compiz
Gnome

It seems like you cannot run Compiz and Xinerama at the same time(correct?) So the solution is then to use XRandR right? I configured my xorg.conf using aticonfig --initial=dual-head. When I do that and reboot, everything works fine and Compiz is enabled! Hooray! But wait, there is a separate screen on each monitor and I can't drag windows between them. So I open amdcccle and change the monitors to share a screen(single desktop, multi monitor) and reboot... and my left monitor looks fine but the right monitor(the 1920x1200 one) looks corrupted. Strange text composited over, weird flickering, etc. I can't see the login prompt to type my password due to the corruption.

Ubuntu Installation :: Compiz Crashes All The Time With Non-fglrx Drivers

May 5, 2010

Compiz is utterly unusable, ever since probably about 9.04 or 9.10, when Ubuntu took out the Catalyst drivers for my laptop w/ Mobility Radeon HD 2300 their less capable open-source variants, which crashes after about 15 minutes of use.

The screen gradually becomes less responsive for about 5 seconds, until it just completely freezes and becomes completely unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse commands. I tried using the RadeonHD drivers instead and the problem is still there. The 'Hardware Drivers' app in System > Administration doesn't seem to do detect any fglrx drivers for my system.

How would I get some working fglrx drivers back?

And I don't want to use Metacity anymore.

Ubuntu :: How To "turn On" Compiz

Dec 9, 2010

How do I tell my Ubuntu 10.04 and/or 10.10 installations (I have both) to *use* Compiz now that it has *evidently* been installed?BACKGROUND -I installed Docky and some other gadgets (Cairo Clock, desktop calendar) that informed me they couldn't be properly displayed unless I "enabled compositing". What I did in response was install xcompmgr, then used Start Up Applications to start it upon boot. Doing that enabled Docky and those other gadgets to display properly: my hardware thus seems capable of supporting compositing to some degree.

Later I was informed that xcompmgr was old and inelegant compared to Compiz. So I used Synaptic to install several Compiz packages. I now have a bunch of Compiz configuration panels and tools, *scads* of options(!), and a panel button.PROBLEM -What I haven't been able to find in all of those wonderful Compiz GUI controls is a way to tell Compiz or my Ubuntu 10 installations to run Compiz. So I can't seem to "turn Compiz on", either in real-time or at boot. The result is that if I disable xcompmgr, then run the Compiz configurator tool, compositing remains disabled such that Docky and those other desktop gadgets don't display properly.QUESTION -

Maybe I've made the wrong assumption, but given the width and depth of the Compiz GUI tools, I would suppose somewhere in there would be a way to tell Compiz or my Ubuntu 10 installs to start and use Compiz on boot, etc.But I can't find those controls. Do I instead need to run a command line? (Seems counter-intuitive given the huge number of Compiz choices I now seem to have, but Linux can sometimes be that way.)For that matter, is my first problem perhaps the I need some way to simply verify that I have all the Compiz stuff I need?

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.5 Freezes From Time To Time With A INTEL GM45?

Oct 26, 2010

I don't know why but since I upgraded the KDE 4.4 desktop from openSUSE 11.3 to 4.5, the desktop just freezes some times.

If i was listening music, or watching a video I can still hear everything and even move the mouse, but nothing works.

So I switch to TTy1, perform a init 3, then init 5 to restart all the graphic system, and start again. This happens without message, without log, and without clue...

Should I downgrade to 4.4 or this has a Workaround?

My son needed to do some video editing so I set him up w/an account and turned off the autologin feature. I'm trying to turn it back on now, but it won't. I've gone into Configure Desktop, Advanced tab, Login Manager, entered the requisite root password, and clicked on the Convenience tab. Enable Auto-Login is checked, and my account is selected as the user. However when I power up the machine it always presents the login screen. I've also tried enabling the password-less login but that didn't make a difference.
