I have kubuntu running. I have tried updating to KDE 4.5 Beta using the KPackageKit and i now get 118 blocked packages which i cannot install. I used the CLI and typed apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and this did not fix the problem. Is there anyway to find out why those packages are blocked?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I tried to update my ubuntu, I received an error regarding the UUID not existing. When I updated, everything on the system was swell, but now I get the UUID does not exist. I reckon that ubuntu 10.04 does not need UUID. I can only run from the ubuntu shell with limited commands. I tried to edit the file /etc/default/Grub and it claimed to not exist. I have 2 separate versions of ubuntu on there, but it's using the grub installed from ubuntu 8.04. It says I'm using grub .97 beta. I am sure I have a brief idea of what to do. The problem is accessing the file necessary to do that. I will have to remove a line that says "LINUX_USE_UUID=true" or something like that. I don't know where that folder is. Apparently people say that its in /etc/default/grub. That doesn't exist for me.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got a problem while updating KDE from 4.1.2 to 4.2. In our college we can't download more than 20MB officially. So I'm unable to get kdegames which is 32MB from Konsole so I downlaoded it using proxy and I copied it into the /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ folder and now using this command (yum groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)').
I tried to update to KDE 4.2 using Konsole but it is showing:

I am using Ubantu9.04 and before few days I have tried installing amsn.It prompted to dependencies for following packages :
1. farsight2-0.0.17
2. gstreamer-0.10.27
After installing that I have lost sound,and the error was :
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plug-ins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."
aplay -l
gives output - sound card not found
but lspci -v - list the sound card
Kpackage manager is not updating. When I try to I get this error. I am un-able to install any packages.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use Skype beta on my acer aspire one with ubuntu 10.10. The video runs brilliantly and i can also here my wife from the other end but she cannot hear me. Apparently something is fishy with my mic input. I tried alsamixer and everything is in unmute. My alsa version is 1.0.23. The only think she hears is a loud hissing noise which is normally my bat voice but she doesnt need to know that. I can record my voice in the sound recorder but nothing comes out in Skype!

If I have 10.04 beta 1, could I just continue to update and not have to burn another disk to install? Or do I have to burn the beta 2 and reinstall if I want it?
Booted my laptop up for the first time in a while and ran

sudo apt-get upgrade to get updates for my packages. After installing I needed a reboot since I was on kernel 2.6.35-28. Post-reboot, I get stuck on a black screen with random artifacts after the purple screen after Grub, regardless of kernel (back to 2.6.35-22 is the oldest I have) with exception to the recovery mode options. Pressing the power button will shutdown the system in what seems to be the usual manner. The screen changes to the purple with ubuntu in the middle and the dot loading bar and shuts down.
I booted into recovery mode and opted to repair packages and rebooted but to no avail. I can get into a terminal by editing the boot options in Grub swapping out " quiet splash vt.handoff=7 " with "--verbose". Currently have a terminal on kernel 2.6.38-10 Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. Win 7 partition also boots fine.This feels like a driver issue, but I'm not sure. Boot log (/var/log/boot.log) looks fine except for these lines:

The first 2 shouldn't be affecting my Ubuntu boot in this manner (other than failing to automatically mount my NTFS partition, which is a different problem), however the last one worries me. Doing some research on the termination status 4 of ureadahead-other I came across this page here, but am wary to just go around willy-nilly deleting things I don't know much about. It wouldn't be a great loss to simply blow the disk away and restart, but I'd rather salvage what's there if I can..
