Nov 24, 2010I do a lot of testing and developing on an Ubuntu machine at my university, and I don't have sudo access to the machine. It hasn't been a problem so far because the tools I've needed have been installed.
However, I have to build OpenCV, which has a lot of dependencies, some of which (notably, libbz2-dev) aren't installed.
I have access to localtmp on the local drive, and of course my own home folder (which is on NFS). Is there a way for me to install a local version of the tools I need using apt-get without sudo access? If not, is there another way to install them? I've been using CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/localtmp for some builds, but I'm not sure if this is the way to go, or if there is a better way.
tl;dr Is there a way to install applications locally without the ability to sudo?

Jun 24, 2010I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Feb 17, 2009I got a problem while updating KDE from 4.1.2 to 4.2. In our college we can't download more than 20MB officially. So I'm unable to get kdegames which is 32MB from Konsole so I downlaoded it using proxy and I copied it into the /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ folder and now using this command (yum groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)').
I tried to update to KDE 4.2 using Konsole but it is showing:

6:kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386: failure: kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386.rpm from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
And even by double-clicking the KDEgames rpm file I'm unable to install it is saying GPG (I'm not sure GPG or not, start with G i think) Key missing so it is taking too much time and not doing anything.

Mar 29, 2010I am using Ubantu9.04 and before few days I have tried installing amsn.It prompted to dependencies for following packages :
1. farsight2-0.0.17
2. gstreamer-0.10.27
After installing that I have lost sound,and the error was :
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plug-ins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."
aplay -l
gives output - sound card not found
but lspci -v - list the sound card

Ubuntu Installation :: Restricted Modules Not Updating With Latest Kernel Updates Lucid 10.04
May 8, 2010I have noticed in the recent updates there is a Kernel update 2.6.32-22 but there is no restricted modules included. On my Desktop I have a Nvidia card which I installed the driver using the Hardware Drivers Application. As far as I know these Drivers are ether reinstalled or updated whenever there is a kernel update.
I also have a Laptop with a ATI Radeon card which I did run the updates and ended up (after the reboot) in low graphics mode, after a bit of work I was able to reinstall the drivers and get my desktop back so that's ok now.
I had this problem a few years ago with an old version of Ubuntu, kernel updates but no restricted drivers. The drivers turned up the next day and all was fine. I was just wandering if this is a known issue with Lucid or if anyone else has had this problem, It's been a couple of days since I noticed the Kernel update but still Restricted Modules. Oh I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04
