General :: Ubantu Lost Sound After Updating Packages?
Mar 29, 2010
I am using Ubantu9.04 and before few days I have tried installing amsn.It prompted to dependencies for following packages :
1. farsight2-0.0.17
2. gstreamer-0.10.27
After installing that I have lost sound, and the error was :
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plug-ins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."
my laptop can only use a USB NIC card. the right driver is rt73.inf and I have it instaaled in the root directory but somehow cant' get linux to recognize it. I found an old guide on the internet for installation that said to use ndiswrapper but I'm nowhere on the installation and setup. What do I do?
what this means? installArchives() failed: Preconfiguring packages ... Preconfiguring packages ... dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 11756 package 'vinagre': `Depends' field, reference to `libgconf2-4': version contains ` ' I get it while trying to update my computer.
I have tried to boot Ubantu 10.04 several times and every time the screen is unreadable, the desktop is broken up into about 5 vertical sections and that's as far as I can get. Help. I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop. other versions of Ubantu work okay.
My PC lost power while updating. After booting, I run update once again and everything seems to be fine, except the message "could not do simulate: coreutils-libs-8.4-8.fc13.i686 requires coreutils = 8.4-8.fc13 : Success - empty transaction".
When I try using "yum update", I receive the error message below.
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Setting up Update Process Resolving Dependencies --> Running transaction check
I cant change my user settings (password, login screen settings etc) after upgrading to 10.4 on my desktop pc. It says I don't have rights. I'm the only user, no other profiles. Otherwise seems to be working fine!
I partial updated the ubuntu packages after repeated messages. Finally it asked me to delete obsolete files and I clicked Ok. After some time the wireless internet Icon on the top right corner disappered.
Now I cant connect to internet by my router either wireless or wired. My wlan drivers are ok too. There seem to be no network whatsoever.
Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.40, I no longer have sound, except for the Ubuntu sound when it loads during start up. Does anyone know how I can recover sound on my computer?
i bought an ebay usb obd2 interface and i could not get it to work in ubantu netbook i want to use my laptop to use when i fix a car to be able to read the codes well i just installed ubantu i never used linx before but for some reason i got it to install on my laptop i allways used xp but i am sick of the crashing and read that ubantu was very good way to use linux.
I was using dual boot (windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10) and it was going well. Couple of days ago I updated to Ubuntu 11.04 and everything was OK. Yesterday I cought some virus in windows, installed Microsoft security essentials which asked to update Windows. After update, dual boot is gone. It boots to windows directly with no option to choose between OS.

I have som packages installed from the Ubuntu repos that I don't want to be updated (if a new version comes) when I run "apt-get upgrade". How can I forbid aptupdate those packages, but update all of the others packages as normal?
way of updating only the security packages on CentOS?
If I do a yum update. It updates everything and creates a new version which will unnecessarily uses space along with the old version. I don't want this to happen. way of updating only the security packages and keeping my old version of CentOS?
I'm using kubuntu karmic on my computer. I hv a prob. frm some days that when I run "sudo apt-get update" or "sudo aptitude update", then it downloads same packages every time of 10.5 mb. I also recreated my sources.list file but it has same prob. again..
I have kubuntu running. I have tried updating to KDE 4.5 Beta using the KPackageKit and i now get 118 blocked packages which i cannot install. I used the CLI and typed apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and this did not fix the problem. Is there anyway to find out why those packages are blocked?
I don't know what I did but I lost all audio. I'm running F15 with gnome 3. By opening system settings and then sound I don't find anything muted. Under hardware I have 3 devices, the first is RS880 Audio Device (Radeon HD 4200) this one has no sound at all when I click test speakers. Then I have quickcam comm STX and then I have Internal Audio which works by clicking on test speakers.. I have no clue of where to start to fix this but reinstall everything again.
openSUSE 11.2 64bit libxine1 from Packman 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

Also I am totally confused by the mixer, it has so many knobs that I am totally lost!
Under 10.04, I was using my sound card just fine, but after a system update,I lost all my sound profiles and my sound. I'm using my mobo's SPDIF ( I have an ASUS p7p55d).
I got a problem while updating KDE from 4.1.2 to 4.2. In our college we can't download more than 20MB officially. So I'm unable to get kdegames which is 32MB from Konsole so I downlaoded it using proxy and I copied it into the /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ folder and now using this command (yum groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)').
I tried to update to KDE 4.2 using Konsole but it is showing: Error Downloading Packages: 6:kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386: failure: kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386.rpm from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
And even by double-clicking the KDEgames rpm file I'm unable to install it is saying GPG (I'm not sure GPG or not, start with G i think) Key missing so it is taking too much time and not doing anything.
So i created a USB startup disk on my 32g flash. Worked fine until I went to update the packages on it. Now it wont boot up and it also fails when trying to install on another machine.
I recently had to rebuild my computer with a new HDD and decided to load the new Ubuntu 10.04 which seems to work great. I was in the middle of downloading packages from the Ubuntu Software Center when the computer decided to reboot in the middle of downloading 6 packages. I went to the Synaptic Package Manager and it said to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a Here is what I got when I did that. What do I do next to fix and continue downloading the corrupted packages?
When I try to update my packages, or install new packages, I get this error:"E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libglib2.0-0_2.26.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb: subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 1"I tried the "sudo apt-get install -f" but it didn't work.I'm running 10.10, on a Asus laptop
Ok, so I just finished correcting my driver issue with my wireless card when I'm struck with another problem....after gaining access to the net and updating my packages, ubuntu fails to boot up. It freezes at the boot screen where it runs the 5 orange dots with the ubuntu logo.
I updated the package libcgic-devel to a newer release of the same version. The change in the distributed files includes renaming a file cgic.html to index.html. I have both files installed now and cgic.html is orphaned.
I'm trying to update Ubuntu 10.04 after a clean installation, it downloaded 245 files, and there is an error in the indexes of the 2 last packages:Failed to fetch [URL] difiere (bad size) Failed to fetch [URL] difiere (bad size) This happens even changing the repository to main server or another through "Software origins".Update-manager doesn't conclude the update because it can't download all the packages.
my Internet connection stopped working suddenly after updating the packages using synaptec package manager and rebooting it..can anyone say me why did this happen.BTW,mine is ubuntu 10.10 and i am absolute new to linux.I had to configure my n/w connections right from the scrap again
I seem to have a problem with sound after upgrading KDE. All multimedia applications (Amarok, xine, vlc) do not produce sound at all. Sounds at startup and notifications have also disappeared. However, when I go to yast -> sound -> play test sound, it works. I tried to update my sound drivers following instructions from here: Alsa-update - openSUSE but it didn't change anything. I also tried to configure the sound output device in Amarok (Configure -> Playback -> Configure Phonon). The only option that it offers is PulseAudio Sound server, and when I press "test", nothing happens (although it is supposed to play a sound).
I have the following packages installed: alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.23-28.1.i586 alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.23.20100626_2.6.31.12_0.2-1.1.i586 alsa-firmware-1.0.23-8.1.noarch alsa-utils-1.0.23-20.1.i586 alsa-plugins-1.0.23-28.1.i586 alsa-1.0.23-62.1.i586 alsa-tools-1.0.21-2.5.i586 alsa-tools-gui-1.0.21-2.5.i586 alsa-oss-1.0.17-53.1.i586 libasound2-1.0.23-62.1.i586 pulseaudio-lang-0.9.21-57.2.noarch pulseaudio-0.9.21-57.2.i586
