I have som packages installed from the Ubuntu repos that I don't want to be updated (if a new version comes) when I run "apt-get upgrade". How can I forbid aptupdate those packages, but update all of the others packages as normal?

I used the CLI and typed apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and this did not fix the problem. Is there anyway to find out why those packages are blocked?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got a problem while updating KDE from 4.1.2 to 4.2. In our college we can't download more than 20MB officially. So I'm unable to get kdegames which is 32MB from Konsole so I downlaoded it using proxy and I copied it into the /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ folder and now using this command (yum groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)').
I tried to update to KDE 4.2 using Konsole but it is showing:

And even by double-clicking the KDEgames rpm file I'm unable to install it is saying GPG (I'm not sure GPG or not, start with G i think) Key missing so it is taking too much time and not doing anything.
I am using Ubantu9.04 and before few days I have tried installing amsn.It prompted to dependencies for following packages :
1. farsight2-0.0.17
2. gstreamer-0.10.27
After installing that I have lost sound,and the error was :
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plug-ins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."
aplay -l
gives output - sound card not found
but lspci -v - list the sound card
Kpackage manager is not updating. When I try to I get this error. I am un-able to install any packages.

sudo apt-get upgrade to get updates for my packages. After installing I needed a reboot since I was on kernel 2.6.35-28. Post-reboot, I get stuck on a black screen with random artifacts after the purple screen after Grub, regardless of kernel (back to 2.6.35-22 is the oldest I have) with exception to the recovery mode options. Pressing the power button will shutdown the system in what seems to be the usual manner. The screen changes to the purple with ubuntu in the middle and the dot loading bar and shuts down.
I booted into recovery mode and opted to repair packages and rebooted but to no avail. I can get into a terminal by editing the boot options in Grub swapping out " quiet splash vt.handoff=7 " with "--verbose". Currently have a terminal on kernel 2.6.38-10 Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. Win 7 partition also boots fine.This feels like a driver issue, but I'm not sure. Boot log (/var/log/boot.log) looks fine except for these lines:

The first 2 shouldn't be affecting my Ubuntu boot in this manner (other than failing to automatically mount my NTFS partition, which is a different problem), however the last one worries me. Doing some research on the termination status 4 of ureadahead-other I came across this page here, but am wary to just go around willy-nilly deleting things I don't know much about. It wouldn't be a great loss to simply blow the disk away and restart, but I'd rather salvage what's there if I can..

What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. Now, as of now, I want to carry out the compilation using 32 bit libraries, however, I really don't want to install 64bit version of all prerequisites each time I switch the compilation from 32 bit to 64. Is there any way to have both architectures at the same time?
I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
