I am running firefox, and when I minimize a programme I "lose" it completely in the bottom right hand corner of my screen and unable to re-call. Have i fiddled with something to create this stupid error.
View 2 RepliesI am running the NBR using the Gnome interface, instead of the default netbook interface, but the problem happens even if I switch back to the default.Whenever I click on the MINIMIZE to desktop [v] button, the program abends (i.e. it disapppears, is NOT visible mimimized to the desktop, nor shows in the task bar or lower panel.The default buttons are in order of placement are:x [close], v (downward pointing arrowhead)[minimize to desktop] and [^ / ] (upward pointing arrowhead / square) [minimize /maximize]. I realise that on a small netbook screen such as my Asus EEE 1000 PC one might easily click on the "close" (x) button my mistake.
However, I UORPOSELY click on the down arrow button, and the current program / window disappears completely. As per my description above, I cannot find the application, so I have to relaunch it from the program menu. If it had been minimized, the system would inform me that the program was already running. Since it does not, it is a safe assumption and statement to say that the application / window / program has abendedMy only workaround is to adjust the maximixe size of the window using the rightmost button (downward arrow head = smaller window, square = fully maximized).
I know I've probably should've searched a little harder than what I already did but... If evolution mail is closed, I get no notifications... How can I minimize this to the tray, or have the notifications show even with the program closed?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was using Compiz, and was going to check out the 3DBox add on. I clicked it, enabled it, and then my windows vanished. I rebooted. Then, when I came back, all my windows open now in the top left of the screen, and the close, minimize and maximize icons are gone. I cannot even see the top bar of a window to move it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI applied an update of some software I cannot recall and now my system won't boot up. I see a quick flash of the ubuntu flash screen (a white symbol) and then it hangs. I've tried numerous kernel choices at boot with no joy, the recovery console boots so far (to initramfs prompt) but I cannot access my disk to get data off of it, or at least I don't know how too.
How can I access my disc and what options do I have for getting up and running again, been using Ubuntu for over 18 months now and have enjoyed using it but now its not working i've not got a clue, currently running off of a live disc, it won't allow me to access my driver either strangely? If I was running windows, I would of just re-installed over the top and not lost any data, can I do similar with the live disc.
I have a web server that is only accessible to those in the local network. Since it is mainly a testing server, i want to add a test mail server to this system so i can test my programs that email out before i make them public and find out they dont work. I've done this before a while back, but dont recall how i did it or even what the software was(it was for windows, but i want to go linux this time)

One program is giving problems. It is a program called Sharescope and I pay a subscription for it and it runs in my Windows partition. I downloaded Wine and then downloaded Sharescope three times but when I click to install it comes up with the following message;

I contacted Sharescope and they said it was a permission issue in Ubuntu. Is there any way to install this program or will I have to work with it in Windows?
i've recently bought a ZTE MG880+ modem of reliance and since then i'm trying to establish a net connection in 9.10 but failed. As i was searching for a solution i came to know about wvdial and usb modeswitch;i dwnlded both the programs in XP and installed only wvdial because i couldn't install the usb modeswitch program. But still i was able to modeswitch with the following procedure,-
note down the idvendor & idproduct with lsusb
sudo chmod 777 /lib/udev/rules.d/61-mobile-action.rules
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/61-mobile-action.rules
changed the default idvendor and idproduct with my own e.g 0x19d2:0xfff5
saved the file in downloads folder with name 90-mobile-action.rules
moved the file to /etc/udev/rules.d folder
reboot
After rebooting when i again plugged in the usb modem the lsusb command showed that idvendor:idproduct=0x19d2:0xfffe.So i think that mode switching is done but still i'm unable to connect to internet
I have downloaded the jdk-6u20-linux-i586.bin from their website. I also read the instruction given to install jdk manually but i was not able to run a single program. Can someone give a step by step instruction to install jdk and also tell me how to set the path so i can easily execute the programs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was running 9.04 and could, through some magical sequence of toggling options that I was unable to figure out, occasionally get recording from the mic to work in audacity. Ardour worked more reliably, but is kind of over-featured. Audacity is simpler and I know how to get things done. For a while, I was doing basic recording in Ardour, saving it to wav then editing in audacity.
Well, I noticed a howto on getting audacity working in 9.10... so I upgraded ("what could possibly go wrong?"). I still can't record audio in audacity and ardour is now ALSO unable to record audio. They start recording samples but nothing comes in but silence. I've got audacity set to ALSA/default/default and when I click monitor, the stream appears in the pavucontrol app. I've moved it to the input device and that doesn't seem to affect the results at all. Everything looks like it should be working fine except there's some invisible mute button, or something. Under alsamixer's Capture section, Mic has a red "CAPTUR" with no bar to adjust.
However i am unable to find the Run program. It was easy to find on the other Distro's i have tried but i have been unable to locate to in Fedora 12.

I work for a food manufacturing company in Sheffield and we have a machine called a duck injector which operates off a Human Machine Interface Touch Screen. The program inside this has been written and runs using Linux. This is stored on a Compact Flash Card.
This screen has been damaged and isn't made anymore so we've been sent a new screen which is a 12'1" Intel Atom N270 HMI.
I simply tried to put the Flash Card in the port and powered it up (booting from a removable source) and i get the following:
I've had absolutely zero experience with Linux so i'm completely stuck as to what to do to get it to work.
I've got a flash card with XP on it so i can boot up in that but then it won't read the flash card with the program on because it's in Linux (presumably?)
I've also tried downloading Mubuntu 10.10 and booted it up using that on a flashdrive - this allows me to read the flash card with the program but i can't get it to boot up/run.
just installed iptraf and was using it. However, I lost the SSH link while IPTRAF was running. Now when I try to go into detailed statistics it says: detailed interface stats alreday monitoring eth0. How do I stop that so I can start it again? I tried kill and the process id which I found using pidof iptraf but it won;t stop the program.

I am familiar with the program and have had it running previously when the machine was Linux-only. Everything else, e.g.Firefox and Office, work fine in Suse.

The problem occurs with all commands - not just this one. isis3Startup.sh is in green on the screen so I assume I should be able to run it - I have never had any problem when it was installed previously.
Whenever I try to install a program by Synaptic Package Manager, it downloads packages but it doesn't install those.It tries to connect to downloads.openwrt.org but unables to connect because of connection time out. I have attached a screenshot of it.

When I try to i receive the error:

When I check the permissions tab of properties there is no option to make it executable as per screenshot.
Also using chmod +x doesn't change anything but I am able to open .exe using WINE in the terminal but I would rather I did not have to do this every time I use WINE.
I have no intention of using mIRC, it was just a small windows installer I downloaded for testing.
I have Mint 10 installed, and I am using Pidgin with GFire plugin for my messenger. I am having an issue where pidgin will become greyed out, and I am unable to use the program after it greys out. This happens fairly fast after I start up pidgin, maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Screenshot below, cant post links so trying this.

I wrote a multithread program(c++,gnu gcc). it contains a main program and plugins. some functions in plugins use sleep(). Using these functions in threads cause freezing program. in other word thread sleeps but dosn't wake. How can i use sleep() in my plugin functions without this problem?
