Could someone please tell me how to turn my password settings back on for mintupdate? Somehow it got turned off. I don't like how software can be updated without my password now.

I think I have some problems in my grub2 installation since installing 10.10. I ran the boot info script, and can see that there are problems but I get nervous messing with grub
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy system goes through slow periods where it just crawls and others where it's fine, but I'm wondering which service settings are OK to just shut off to give me a bit more oomph when I boot up.The others I'm pretty OK with like spam assassin, dictionary server and so on, but some of the others i wonder if they only serve to slow things down..Also..I live in a very dusty environment and I KNOW the fans and other parts get caked with dust and it wouldn't surprise me if the dust got so bad it just stops the fans completely so once in a while I use my air compressor to blow the crud out and I usually get covered myself, but how safe is using the compressor? It's not the type that typically fills up with condensed water droplets so that isn't a super critical issue..It's a small 1 hp deal, elect drive and so on.. Safe enough? It's all I have and/or can afford..

I am not sure when this started, or if it ever did work before, but when I started noticing that the screensaver will not turn off the monitor, I set the gnome power manager to make the monitor sleep after an hour.
Now, the display will not turn back on after it has been in sleep mode. I know the system is still running fine as I can ssh from another PC and see that everything seems to be normal, no error message in dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, etc.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that monitor DPMS is not detected but still enables DPMS:
Is this a problem with catalyst driver? I know it's not the PC or the monitor, because I have a 2nd PC with the same video driver with the same problem, but others without this driver don't (ati open source, nvidia, etc. all work fine.)
I'm wondering if the problem always existed before, but I just didn't notice it because the display sleep mode was never set? If that's the case, my hunch is that it looked like it worked because the monitor was smart enough to turn itself off when the screensaver kicked in and just showed a blank screen, and the video driver was never involved with sleep mode until I set it in gnome power manager, at which point it started showing this problem of not waking up? And because the screensaver was no longer set to blank the screen, but to show some animation, that's why the monitor will never sleep anymore?
I am running on ubuntu 10.04 and using the latest nvidia driver. What I experience is a random black screen, my monitor goes dead and won't turn back on till I hardboot. I had this issue on windows and solved it by downloading rivatuner and telling it to force my 9700m into staying in 3d performance mode at all times. I know it has nothing to do with temps or anything like that. All I need to know is how I can duplicate what I did with rivatuner on windows

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy daughter from New Zealand gave me her Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop/Notebook Linux System in December 2009 so that I could use it in bed on days that I was unable to get out to use my main computer as I am a very ill man. I was able to log into the unit as she just said to me to use her name and password to. I have been able to use the unit on the internet at home and my other daughters home through a home wireless system. I clicked on the Upgrade Icon which it did, I think it went from a 7. something to 8.something All the way through the set up it asked me questions and I just clicked yes thinking that was what I had to do. My problem now is, that when I turn the unit on it asks me for a username and password. I put the details my daughter gave me but it tells me invalid user and password. All I do know is that a friend of my daughter installed the Ubuntu Program onto the Laptop/Notebook. Can anyone tell me how or what I have to do now to be able to use the unit again as I am getting very frustrated with the whole thing. I am not used to using Ubuntu and am totally lost with it as I have always been a Microsoft user.

After a week or so I'll reinstall Ubuntu.I've customized the looks and feel of Ubuntu desktop and have changed many other settings at a number of places. restart X, then in console:
gnome-session-remove gnome-panel
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
gnome-panel &
now both top and bottom panels are gone. I need help to bring both panels back. I'm on jaunty jackalope 9.04.
Seems that i have totally ****ed up my sony vaio (vgn-fz21z). I've been doing some partitioning and formatting without really knowing what i was doing. Now it is a mess.The vaio comes with pre-installed windows vista, which is no longer installed. I want it to be.Ubuntu 10.4 is installed. In grub I can choose vista but that is only vaio recovery tool. Which is not working. When I try the format cption and take it all back to the original settings, it says that c: is too small or missing.
I also have some cd:s with windows 7 and xp on, but they can't be read. Now the vaio is not even accepting my ubuntu live-cd. I have nothing of importance on the computer, so there would be no problem re-formatting the whole thing. Can it be done? I would prefer is the vaio recovery tool could be left untouched, it has its own partition. I guess I'm asking: is there a way from inside ubuntu to make a total system re-installation, get rid of different partitions and reconstruct c:, so win can be installed again?
I am using Ubuntu 9.10, I removed the task bar at the bottom of the screen and replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I click on Fire Fox and by default Fire Fox would drop to the bottom of the screen, now it just disappears. Is there any way of putting back the original settings.
