Dec 31, 2010when I installed 10.10 I chose ask for password on login but I want to now just be on when I turn on the computer without asking for a password. how can I do this?

Ubuntu :: No Access To Home - All Profile Settings Disappeared After Password Change
Aug 9, 2011after a period of 3 months I had to change my ubuntu account password on my workstation.
Immediately after the change it seemed to work fine, but when I rebooted all the icons on the desktop, my personal data and themes account settings were gone.
I got an error that there was a problem with a file in my home directory. (I think .ICAccount or s.th like that) I don't remember the correct name, because I bypassed it using chmod 755 on my home directory.
No I dont get any error message but the files in my home folder and all settings are still gone.
There is a README.txt in my home folder:

I can mount it by using the command but that doesn't fix the settings problem and the data that was previously stored on my Desktop doesn't apper. I also dont want to have an encrypted home directory. I didn't use that before. I'm using the whole disk LVM encryption that I applied using the alternate installation cd.

Aug 21, 2011i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. Mar 9, 2010I'm really new to Linux so this will probably sound like a pretty naive question to most users, but how do you change the root password?To install Java, I have to type # su into Terminal,which then asks for the password.What's weird is that when I start typing a password, no characters show up. I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not.I've found a bunch of different sites on the Internet that explain how to change the root password, but none of them seem to work for my specific work station.
I've got Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. In the GRUB boot menu, I can choose to boot normal or in recovery mode (I'm led to believe older versions don't have this option).I've tried typing # sudo passwrd into Terminal, but I already have a root password set up apparently, so I can't change it there.

(not sure if this is the right place for this let me no if not i'll move it I want to add a user to Group "freevo" but if i open User settings via the GUI menus and click on the keys button to enter the root password it keeps coming back to me saying that the password is wrong even though it is'nt (and cap's is off).
So i try the terminal "user-admin" and had the same problem wrong password So i try'd "sudo user-admin" and entered the password at the command line and up pops the User settings GUI with root privileges

Our environment uses an internet proxy that requires a username and password.Under Ubuntu 10.04, I can use the GUI to set the proxy host, port, username and password. When I do this, all the web browsers work, Snyaptic works, etc.However, under Kubuntu 10.04, the GUI lets me specify a proxy host and port, but doesn't appear to save the username and password. Because of this, I have to manually set the proxy information on my web browser, but the package managers don't work because they can't access the internet. Apparently the ability to specify proxy username and password is either broken or unfinished.

Feb 16, 2011On my linux machine, I've enforced a password expiry policy every 45 days. So, today when I tried to ssh to the host, I get the typical "WARNING: Your password has expired". Fine, no big deal. But when I enter my new password and confirm, instead of giving me a login prompt, it tells me passwd all auth tokens updated successfully, then next line, "Connection to <host> closed". I can re-ssh back into that host and all is well from here, but it's a nuisance having to go through the extra step. Is this something in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config somewhere or perhaps a PAM config issue?

Well, the problem is that according to the steps that the person who posted the code, I should type this code after executing Terminal before computer boots. and the way to execute Terminal is to have the key: escape holded Well, I do hold the key: escape. but I see no terminal! I have typed in normal mode...but, I guess the code only works before boot up. How can I execute terminal? is there any other way to fix the display settings? I currently have Windows Xp and Ubuntu.... and I have no problem with the display settings on Xp Can I do do from recovery mode?
Because I have 2 operating systems I get a screen like this (except mine is ubuntu 10.10) If I do it from the recovery mode.... would the code works?

I can change background color, transparency, image, etc. in the profile edit window, save changes,and the _actual_ terminal appearance does not change at all. I did make sure to switch to the edited profile after editing -- to no avail.The default navy-on-light-blue isn't bad, but the light-green default for executables is effectively completely invisible on the light blue background.Is this a bug?
