View 3 Replies View RelatedI am some LinuxUNIX history but still consider my self a newbie.I know Microsoft OS well and am more comfortable with that but willing to learn Linux as well.I have a CentOS 5.5 Server I am using to Host over 18 other sites with a PERL / Web based application. The application and hosting are still working but since the CentOS updates I ran this morning my Session (I think that is the correct word) will only load a black desktop with the top menu bar only having the terminal icon and the bottom having a desktop icon; whereas prior to this update the default CentOS blue backdrop with white flower pattern and Applications, Places, System with the terminal icon and other icons displayed and the clock was off to the right.I think this is the Gnome GUI?
Also On Friday 6-24-11 I added a device line to the /etc/fstab so that my CD/DVD device would load up at boat time. I would not think this to be causing the problem. Please advise me on how to get back my regular GUI interface for this Desktop.
Could someone please tell me how to turn my password settings back on for mintupdate? Somehow it got turned off. I don't like how software can be updated without my password now.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having this weird problem when I turn off my PC and then when its turned back on there are items on the desktop that were not there before (they had been previously but been moved to another folder). Also partitions that I dont want to mount are suddenly mounted and I have to umount as root. I think I have some problems in my grub2 installation since installing 10.10. I ran the boot info script, and can see that there are problems but I get nervous messing with grub

View 3 Replies View RelatedI used a Karmic Live CD to make a forensic image off of a older Windows computer that has a fat32 drive. Immediately after booting it said it was correcting a problem on the drive, I assume that it was running fsck on it. I want to customize my own live CD to not do this. Though I suppose it doesn't do it for ntfs since there isn't a fsck for it yet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu Live CD to get forensic (can't be modified in any way) images off of drives, but on dirty filesystems it does some type of fix on dirty Windows filesystems.
It has the message: File system wasn't safely closed on Windows fixing
How do I turn that off?
I create my own live CD, so I can modify what ever. Where is it? Initrd?
I have XFX ATI-HD5670 and use proprietary catalyst 11.2-1 in 64-bit Fedora 14.
I am not sure when this started, or if it ever did work before, but when I started noticing that the screensaver will not turn off the monitor, I set the gnome power manager to make the monitor sleep after an hour.
Now, the display will not turn back on after it has been in sleep mode. I know the system is still running fine as I can ssh from another PC and see that everything seems to be normal, no error message in dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, etc.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that monitor DPMS is not detected but still enables DPMS:
Is this a problem with catalyst driver? I know it's not the PC or the monitor, because I have a 2nd PC with the same video driver with the same problem, but others without this driver don't (ati open source, nvidia, etc. all work fine.)
I'm wondering if the problem always existed before, but I just didn't notice it because the display sleep mode was never set? If that's the case, my hunch is that it looked like it worked because the monitor was smart enough to turn itself off when the screensaver kicked in and just showed a blank screen, and the video driver was never involved with sleep mode until I set it in gnome power manager, at which point it started showing this problem of not waking up? And because the screensaver was no longer set to blank the screen, but to show some animation, that's why the monitor will never sleep anymore?
I am running on ubuntu 10.04 and using the latest nvidia driver. What I experience is a random black screen, my monitor goes dead and won't turn back on till I hardboot. I had this issue on windows and solved it by downloading rivatuner and telling it to force my 9700m into staying in 3d performance mode at all times. I know it has nothing to do with temps or anything like that. All I need to know is how I can duplicate what I did with rivatuner on windows
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to make a live usb drive with persistents and so far I have used win32DiskImager to write the debian-live-8.1.0-i386-gnome-desktop image to a usb drive. (im using a windows machine to get this set up) and it all went fine. The problem shows itself when i boot from the drive however. it boots fine and i select the live option when prompted. then i get the debian loading screen and once it finishes loading both my screens turn to garbled static and it just hangs there.

And when it ask me about plugin I give the path to it. (the 3.9.2 version of the plugin, because Ubuntu 9.04 has the 3.9.2 version of hplip)
well I install the printer, everything works perfectly.....but, when I turn off the PC, and turn it on again, the printer does NOT work!, I send work for being printed but mothing happens , Ubuntu tells me that the job was printed but ... no case, my printer does not print it.
I have to install it again since cero. what can I don to stop install it every time I turn off the computer ?
10.04
I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.
Can someone explain to me how I get it back?
i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?
View 3 Replies View RelatedLive CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.
I want to use regular expressions and sed to remove html tags from a text file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to find this anywhere. I have burned Debian 5.06 for i386 and trying to login when running the live cd. What is the username and password to get in?
edit....
I found 'user' and 'live' but they don't work.
I need aufs support/patch for kernel 2.6.34.1 as i i need to create a live linux distro for my organization and linux live scripts (the scripts which I am using for creating live linux distro) require aufs and squashfs support. There is a directive for squashfs in kernel configuration file but nothing for aufs and the patch available at linux-live site seems not to work.

View 2 Replies View Relatedhow a way that I can edit the metadata tags on some MP3s using regex?
I've got almost 100 MP3, all named "01 - <song title>," "02 - <song title>," etc., and I, understandably, don't want to edit them all by hand.
Running "s/d{2} - //g" would be so much easier.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 and turned it on after enabling my nvidia video card, but instead of opening regularly, it went to a black screen that said the following. Ubuntu 10.10 Inspiron8200 ttyl
Inspiron8200 login: I can login but this is only like the terminal (or maybe like the recovery console?) (I can only type and receive text) How do I start Ubuntu like normal?
Since installing ubuntu 10.10 in january, my Openoffice (it seems mainly calc) regularly crashes. It always manage to keep file recovery active (even it's not always the latest). There is no really identified pattern except basically editing cells
my packages are currently:
ii openoffice.org-base-core 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1.1 office product
ivity suite -- shared library

I just try to reset my preferences (move $HOME/.openoffice.org to .old) and I will see if it changes something.
