to back-up and eventually restore compiz settings, is it enough to back-up and restore the .compiz directory in $HOME? Reason is that the setting in my classic gnome set-up are different and partially conflict with the unity settings. Since I want to be able to run both environment (to give Unity a chance) I'd like to be able to switch settings easily.

Is there a way to restore only the application switcher from metacity when using compiz?I generally like compiz on, but there is not an application switcher within compiz that provides the usability of the standard metacity switcher.They are fine when you have only a few windows open, but if you are running many apps (some of them with multiple windows) it becomes quite hard to identify the app you want.

I've been looking around on the Internet for a comprehensive tutorial on 'how Compiz works', 'what all the settings mean' and 'using' Compiz; but, so far, have only seen things describing how to do a certain thing or other. I've gone into Compiz Configuration Settings Manager and poked around but what I've seen in there seems extremely technical (in other words - I don't know what the heck these settings mean or what would happen if I changed one of them).So far I've manged to get the magnifying glass thing and I have wobbly windows (don't know if I can take credit for that though). So I see all these amazing demonstrations of it on you tube and whatnot and I wish I could do some of that stuff but I'd really like to approach this by learning all about Compiz from A to Z rather than learn this thing and then that thing, etc.
Is there anything out there that you know of? Ann ebook or something? I saw a book called: "Compiz Fusion" URL... that really, interests me but it is not available as an eBook (believe me I looked and looked and looked) and it's pretty expensive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop fujitsu siemens amilo pi 1505 for about a year there was ubuntu 8.10 installed on it and everything worked fine. 3 days ago i upgraded it to 9.10 and there where the problems began. Sound crashed OS couldn't find sound card. I've removed alsa, pulse audio completly and sound came back. After about 5-15 min's icons dissappeared from the desktop and i had to restart. From then every time i start after booting i see that:

though anything i do there in this window makes no difference whatsoever. So then can I somehow restore graphic settings from the terminal? Or repair/restore basic settings of ubuntu without loosing data?
Well, my desktop's win7 installation stopped working over a year ago...so it just sat there gathering dust until the other night, when I was trying out ubuntu on it from a disk. I was using Xubuntu 9.04 and recently installed 10.04. I have separate / - 20 GB, swap - 1GB and /home - 80GB partitions. I had formatted only the / partition and installed 10.04. I have copied users information from 9.04 to 10.04. I can log into newly installed 10.04 system. But the desktop menus and appearance is that of 9.04. I would like to change it to default 10.04 desktop menus and appearances. I have used command rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity and re logged into my system. But still the desktop menus and appearance didn't change. How can I restore 10.04 xubuntu default desktop menus and appearance settings?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?
The close/minimize/restore bar vanished ever since upgrading to 11.04. Does anyone know how I can get it back?

I had just installed GNOME 3, however, I didn't really like it as much so I decided to go back using GNOME 2,but then a whole bunch of things happened. It will save setting thru "Simple-settings-manager". In addition, some settings will not take effect immediately. Example: The "viewport switcher" in "Desktop-wall". View 3 Replies View RelatedSince a while ago, any changes I make to my Compiz settings are not remembered when I log in again.
On starting a new gnome session, Compiz is firstly always disabled ("Visual Effects" in gnome-appearance-properties is set to "None"). I can enable the "Extra" option, but when I open gnome-appearance-properties a second time, the option is not selected (although Compiz will now be running), and when I log out and back in, Compiz will be disabled again.
After enabling it manually, I find that secondly, the "Desktop Cube" largedesktop feature is replaced by "Desktop Wall". I can change this in ccsm, and the changes take effect immediately, but when I start ccsm a second time, the changes are gone (the "Desktop Cube" checkbox is unselected). After logging out and back in, the old settings are in effect again.
Since ccsm will forget the changes even before I log out, I suspect it is somehow unable to save them. I've tried looking at the stderr output of gnome-appearance-properties and ccsm, but haven't seen anything that looks relevant.
Searching for what appears to be "missing" CompizConfig settings in the CompizConfig Settings Manager. How to change the "Cube" into a "Cylinder" and how to enable floating windows (windows that seem to hover just over the cube when it is rotated. Were these eliminated? They were both available in 9.10.

I have been missing this feature from windows, and had thought I would just have to do without, but today, people have alluded that it is possible to do with compiz. I am referring to the ability to take a window, drag it to the edge of the screen and it to then fill up that side of the screen.. or if drug to the top, maximize itself. I have looked and messed with settings, and have been able to do something to the effect of dragging my mouse to the edge of the screen will kind of tile windows, but it does it to all my windows or all of a certain type and whatnot.
And I want to do it to a specific window, and then another - for the side by side viewing. it also does not vertically maximize it, only taking a portion of the screen from top to bottom. I have been able to do it this way by having only 2 windows open and using a keyboard to do so, but i would like to be able to use only my mouse. Is there a way to drag one window the the edge of the screen and have it maximize to that half-side of the screen AND/OR drag to the top and have it maximize to fullscreen?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the proprietary nVidia drivers for my 8800 GT, the purple UBUNTU boot screen got gigantic and ugly.I installed startupmanager and changed the settings from 640x480 to 1024x768.The result was a garbage (scrabbled) boot up splash (UBUNTU)That didn't work out so I set everything back to 640x480 but that made it go to no splash on boot (black screen until GDM), and a garbage UBUNTU splash on shut down.How can I just put it back to the ugly / gigantic boot screen that was there before I screwed it all up?

I just received this Acer Aspire One Aoa110 from my sister.
Originally Windows Xp, my cousin changed it to Linux.
Right now I am so frustrated with this, as I have no knowledge of Linux whatsoever.
I tried looking for the Acer recovery program, but I can't find it.
I do have to say that Linux is really fast, but I like personalizing my walllpaper where I can do it with Windows Xp..
So my question is, how can I restore this computer to how it was before my cousin tweaked it?

I'm running PC/OS 10.1, which is based on Xubuntu, I've got Compiz and everything installed on here. However, if I've got Compiz activated when I log out, I find myself with no titlebar or frames whenever I log back in. Thankfully, this is easily corrected by opening the Fusion Icon and going back to Xfwm and then going back to Compiz, where I have the titlebar and frames and eye-popping effects and the whole nine yards. But it'd be a lot nicer to not have to deal with having to correct that every time I log in in the first place.

Before 10.04 I could just run Applications/System tools/ Compiz fusion icon and it would appear in my panel. This doesn't work any more! when I run "fusion-icon --no-start" in terminal I get
